[Record I — The Sky That Fell]

We were not always beneath this.

I am recording that as clearly as possible, because fewer people remember it each year, and memory has become unreliable the longer we remain here.

Before the ash, there was a sky.

Not this dim layer that presses down on everything, but something open. It stretched far enough that you could not measure it by sight alone.

They called it blue.

The word still exists, but it no longer feels accurate. It describes something we cannot properly recall.

The elders used to say the sky moved.

Not clouds.

Something behind it.

They never explained what they meant. When asked, they would either avoid the question or change their answer entirely.

No one speaks about it anymore.

Those who tried to hold onto that memory were the first to lose coherence in their accounts.

[Record II — First Descent]

The ground did not collapse in the way we expected.

There was no fracture. No audible break.

It lowered.

Slowly enough that it should have been noticeable, yet fast enough that no one reacted in time.

Entire sections of the district disappeared beneath the surface.

There were no immediate sounds of panic. That came later, when the absence became clear.

Where structures once stood, there was only ash. Already settled, already undisturbed.

We conducted initial testing within hours.

The ash retained warmth, though no heat source was detected.

Contact produced inconsistent results. Some reported a tingling sensation, others nothing at all.

Inhalation produced more severe effects.

Several subjects began recalling detailed events they could not have experienced. Names, locations, conversations with no identifiable source.

Others lost simple information. Their own names. Directions. Language fragments.

One subject maintained that he had lived an entirely separate life and that this one was constructed afterward.

We recorded his statements for three days.

By the fourth, he no longer recognized the recording team.

By the fifth, he stopped responding entirely.

[Record III — Behavior of the Ash]

The ash does not behave like standard particulate matter.

It reacts to presence, though not in a consistent or predictable way.

Footsteps vary depending on location. In some areas, the surface gives more than expected. In others, it resists completely, leaving no visible trace.

Sound propagation is irregular.

There are zones where normal speech carries far beyond expected range. In others, even raised voices fail to produce an echo.

Certain sections shift prior to contact.

This is not caused by wind or structural instability.

The movement is localized and occurs in direct response to approach.

Excavation was prohibited early on.

This restriction was ignored.

Initial reports describe resistance beneath the first layer. Not hardness, but pressure. As if the material below was not meant to be displaced.

No full reports were recovered from those teams.

Only partial logs, fragmented recordings, and abandoned equipment.

[Record IV — The Call]

Repeated traversal through the same paths produces inconsistent results.

Some routes remain stable over multiple passes.

Others change without warning.

Paths that were previously clear become difficult to cross. Areas that resisted movement begin to shift more easily.

The ash does not maintain a fixed state.

It adjusts.

In several cases, individuals reported a sensation of resistance that did not match the terrain itself. Movement forward would become increasingly difficult without a physical cause, while changing direction reduced that resistance immediately.

This effect was not environmental.

It felt internal.

Several subjects described it as something "pressing back" against intent rather than motion. As if the act of continuing was being evaluated, not the path itself.

Prolonged exposure intensified this effect.

Subjects reported difficulty holding coherent thoughts. Not loss, but obstruction. Certain lines of thinking became harder to maintain, as if something was limiting how far they could follow them.

In rare cases, this resistance broke suddenly.

Those affected described a brief moment of clarity followed by disorientation and physical collapse.

No measurable cause was identified.

We have not been able to determine whether this effect originates from the ash… or from something interacting through it.

[Record V — Wound]

The designation "Wound" does not accurately describe the phenomenon.

It suggests damage.

This was not damage.

This was removal.

A location where whatever limits perception had been taken away.

The ash receded on its own, exposing the ground beneath.

The exposed area did not follow stable geometry.

Distances could not be measured consistently. Objects shifted position depending on the observer's angle. Lines appeared straight until directly focused on, then bent inward.

There was a measurable increase in ambient activity within the exposed zone.

Not movement. Not sound.

Presence.

As if something beyond the immediate environment was bleeding through.

One observer moved within the restricted distance.

He began documenting his observations clearly.

Midway through his report, his descriptions became inconsistent. He attempted to correct himself multiple times.

Then he stopped.

His body remained upright.

There were no signs of physical injury.

No further speech was recorded.

Audio devices continued functioning.

No sound was captured from that point forward.

[Record VI — "Custodians"]

No movement was detected prior to their appearance.

They were not present, and then they were.

Three entities.

No visible transition.

No identifiable method of arrival.

The Veil Wound did not close in their presence.

It diminished.

Instability decreased within a defined radius.

They did not interact with the environment in a conventional sense, but the environment responded to them.

They appeared human in form.

That detail should not be taken as reassurance.

No verbal communication was observed.

They did not acknowledge the recording team.

Despite this, all personnel reported the same change.

A sudden awareness.

Not learned. Not explained.

Imposed.

An understanding of scale difference that could not be ignored.

Not simply power.

Hierarchy.

One of the entities shifted slightly.

No further action was taken.

All personnel within range collapsed immediately.

There was no external force.

No measurable impact.

Loss of function appeared to originate internally.

After recovery, multiple individuals stated that they had understood something in that moment.

None were able to describe what it was.

[Record VIII — Final Entry]

This record will likely not remain intact.

Previous logs have already been altered or removed without clear cause.

If any part of this survives, then the following should be preserved:

The Lower Ash is not inactive.

Periods of stillness do not indicate safety.

There is movement here that does not present itself directly.

There is a pattern to its behavior.

We have not identified it.

We have only observed fragments of it.

The Wounds are not isolated events.

They are increasing.

Whatever force is interacting through them is not contained in the way we were told.

It is pressing outward.

Not fully present.

Not fully absent.

If this layer was meant to hold something…

…it is no longer holding it completely.
