Chapter 2 - The Unchosen Within

Darkness didn't end. It stretched.

Kairo wasn't sure how long he had been falling. Time didn't make sense here. There was no wind, no sound—just a slow descent through nothing.

Then suddenly—

Impact.

He hit the ground hard.

"—ugh—!"

Air rushed back into his lungs as he rolled onto his side, coughing. The surface beneath him felt cold and unnaturally smooth.

For a few seconds, he stayed there, breathing.

"…I'm alive."

He pushed himself up slowly. The world around him came into focus. An endless grey expanse stretched in every direction. The ground looked like stone, but too perfect. The sky above was empty—no sun, no clouds.Just stillness.

Kairo stood up, scanning his surroundings.

"No people… no structures…"

Nothing.

"So this is the Trial …. Well then what am I suppose to do "

He took a step forward.

" Hello !!!" " is somebody listening" he shouted

Then the ground trembled.

"O fuck "

A crack formed beneath his feet. Then more. They spread rapidly. Kairo stepped back.

"…Here we go . Some bullshit is gonna happen. I can feel that much. "

The ground split open. From the darkness below, something began to rise.

A coffin. Black. Old. Covered in faint, shifting markings.

It stopped in front of him with a dull thud. Silence.

Then—

A soft click.

The lid opened.

Inside was a body.

Pale. Lifeless. Still.

Dead.

Kairo frowned.

"…What kind of trial is this? And why is there a dead person here? "

Then he felt it. Not from the body. From inside it. Something watching.

"Something is wrong".

The corpse moved.Slowly sitting up.Its eyes opened.

Black.

Kairo stepped back instinctively.

"…Yeah, that's not normal."

Then—

It vanished.

" Where did it go "

In an instant, it collided with him.

"—GH—!"

Pain surged through his body.

Not outside but Inside.

Like something forcing its way into him.

" Shit " that's all he could say before he dropped to the ground, clutching his head.

"Get—out—!"

His thoughts shook violently. Something moved through them. Not attacking blindly instead it felt like it's searching Searching then Memories surfaced—his room, the TV, the quiet life he lived—

And something began to take them.Study them.Understand them.

Kairo resisted.

For a moment—

It worked.

Then the presence changed. It stopped forcing. It adapted. It flowed through his mind instead. Learning everything. How he thought. How he spoke. What he felt.

His resistance weakened.

Not shattered.

But overtaken.

His breathing slowed. His grip loosened. And then—

Silence.

His body went still.nA few seconds passed. Then—

His fingers moved slowly. Kairo's eyes opened. They looked the same.

Normal. Calm.

He sat up with steady movements. They looked controlled in a manner. He looked around the grey world. The empty sky. The broken ground.

"…Trial," he said quietly.

His voice matched Kairo's perfectly. He placed a hand on the ground like he was Feeling the texture. The temperature. And Processing everything.

He looked at his hands next. Flexed his fingers. Observed the movement carefully.

"…This is a human body."

" My name ... " he stayed silent for some time like he was looking through the memories of this human and then he said "" kairo? "".

Then he again stopped and started looking through the memories .... " No I don't … have name …. Body have ".

He stood.

"So I am a human?" he stopped talking once again like he was looking through the memories again. " Interesting".

Then he stopped thinking and started looking around . His gaze moved across the empty space again.

" ....At least the body is functional."

The coffin behind him began to break apart, dissolving into black fragments. He watched it happen. Not surprised. Just noting it.

"…That object contained the previous state."

He tilted his head slightly.

"…No longer needed."

Silence returned. But this time—

It didn't feel empty. It felt like something was waiting. He took a step forward. Then stopped.

"…Hunger."

The word came out slowly. As if testing it. He placed a hand on his chest Feeling the heartbeat.

"…This body requires sustenance."

Another pause.

"…Pain. Fatigue. Instinct."

He observed each sensation carefully.

Not reacting. Understanding.

"…Human functions."

His eyes moved again like they were Scanning , Learning.

"…I am adapting."

The ground ahead shifted. Darkness gathered again Not like before. More controlled, more deliberate. Shapes began to form in the distance. There were three.

The Trial hadn't ended. It was continuing.

Kairo—

Or what now carried his form—

watched them approach. No fear like he did not know what that even is . No urgency. Only curiosity.

"…Hostile entities."

He adjusted his stance slightly. Not trained. But instinctively efficient.

"…Observation will continue."

The first shadow lunged. He moved not fast, not skilled but precise. As if testing limits. Learning through action.

The Trial responded. And so did he.
