The grey expanse did not end.
Kairo moved through it at a steady pace, his steps quiet against the cracked ground. The silence had returned after the last encounter, but it no longer felt empty. It felt… waiting.
He did not stop. His body carried traces of damage—dull aches, slight stiffness—but nothing that slowed him enough to matter. Each movement was controlled, deliberate.
"…Sustained functionality acceptable."
The words came automatically.
Ahead, the terrain began to change.
The flat, endless grey broke into uneven ground. Small rises. Shallow dips. Fractures that spread like veins across the surface.
Kairo slowed slightly.
"…Environmental variation."
He adjusted direction.
Then he saw it.
At first, it was just a shape on the horizon.
Dark against darker.
Then—structure.
Walls.
Faint, but defined.
Kairo stopped.
"…Artificial construction detected."
A settlement.
He stood still for a moment, observing.
No movement from this distance. No visible threats.
"…Potential human presence."
That changed things. He resumed walking.
---
The closer he got, the clearer it became. The walls were made of stone and reinforced wood, worn but maintained. Not ancient ruins—something in use. There were marks along the surface like they have been repaired and reinforced many times.
There were signs of people.
Kairo approached without rushing.
His posture adjusted subtly.
Less rigid and direct.
"…Behavioral modification required."
He slowed his pace further as he neared the entrance.
Two figures stood at the gate. These were the Guards.
They were armed.
Watching.
Kairo's eyes moved over them quickly.
Weapons. Stance. Awareness.
"…Organized defense confirmed."
He stepped into view.
Both guards reacted immediately.
One shifted his grip on a spear. The other raised a hand slightly—ready, but not attacking.
"Stop there."
Kairo stopped. Not too close but Not too far also.
"…Comply."
He let his shoulders relax slightly. Not weak—but not threatening.
The guards studied him.
One of them frowned. "You're alone?"
Kairo nodded once. "Yes."
"From where?"
A pause.
Brief—but measured.
"…Unknown."
He corrected himself.
"…I don't know."
The guards exchanged a glance.
Suspicion.
Expected.
Kairo adjusted.
"…Context required."
"I was separated," he added. " From my family."
The tension shifted slightly.
Not gone—but reduced.
The second guard stepped forward a little. "You don't know where you came from, but you made it this far alone?"
Kairo met his gaze.
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
Flat.
The guard narrowed his eyes.
"…Inconsistency detected."
Kairo spoke again, this time slower.
"I lost my identification."
That was something humans valued.
Proof.
Belonging.
"I don't have anything on me," he continued, lifting his hands slightly to show they were empty. "No documents".
Silence followed.
The guards looked him over again—more carefully this time.
Not just as a threat.
As a problem.
"You're saying you're from another village?" the first guard asked.
"Yes."
"Then where's your mark?"
Kairo paused.
He hadn't considered that.
"…Missing data."
"I don't know," he said.
That was true.
The guards exchanged another look Longer this time.
Weighing.
Judging.
Behind them, faint movement could be seen inside the walls. People passing. Life continuing.
Kairo remained still.
No sudden movements.
No unnecessary words.
"…Observation mode."
Finally, the second guard exhaled.
"We can't just let you in," he said. "You understand that, right?"
Kairo nodded.
"Yes."
"If you're lying, or if you're infected—"
The word held weight.
Kairo noticed.
'…Term: infected.'
The guard said "You'll put everyone here at risk."
Kairo tilted his head slightly.
"…Risk acknowledged."
"I'm not infected," he said.
The first guard studied him for a long moment.
Then—
"Wait here."
He turned and stepped inside, speaking briefly to someone out of sight.
Kairo remained where he was.
Still.
Patient.
'…Outcome pending.'
Time passed.
Short—but noticeable.
The second guard didn't take his eyes off him.
"Don't try anything," he said.
Kairo shook his head slightly.
"I won't."
Another pause.
Then—
The first guard returned.
"Alright," he said. "You can come in."
A brief silence followed.
"But you're not free to move around. You'll be checked first."
Kairo nodded.
"Understood."
The gates opened just enough for him to pass.
He stepped forward.
Crossing the threshold.
---
Inside, the air felt different.
Not cleaner.
But… alive.
People moved through narrow paths between buildings. Some carried supplies. Others spoke in low voices.
There was tension—but also order.
Kairo's eyes moved across everything.
Structures. Movement. Behavior.
"…Functional settlement."
The guards led him forward.
"Stay close," one said.
Kairo followed.
No resistance.
No hesitation.
"…Integration in progress."
As they moved deeper into the village, Kairo noticed something else.
People looked at him.
Not openly but subtly Glances.
Whispers.
Awareness.
Outsider detected.
'…Social response observed.'
They stopped in front of a larger structure.
More solid than the others.
Guarded.
"Wait here," the first guard said.
Kairo stopped.
Silent.
The door ahead opened.
Someone stepped out.
He was older than others.
Sharper gaze which carried Authority.
Kairo looked at him.
'…Evaluation incoming.'
The man's eyes settled on him.Not just looking more like Measuring.
"You're the one without identification?"
Kairo nodded.
"Yes."
A pause.
Then—
"Let's see what you really are."
