Chapter 3 - Chapter 2 — What Doesn’t Belong

The hunger didn't return the way it used to.

That was the first thing Wang Lin noticed.

He woke before sunrise again, the cold pressing lightly against his skin. The wall behind him was rough, unchanged. The street ahead was empty.

Nothing new.

And yet—

Something was different.

He sat there for a while, unmoving.

Waiting.

The sharp twisting pain in his stomach should have come.

It didn't.

Instead, there was only a dull weight. Quiet. Controlled. Like something that could rise again… but chose not to.

Wang Lin lowered his gaze.

His hand rested loosely on his knee.

For a moment, he watched it.

Then slowly—

He lifted it.

Nothing happened.

He held it there for a few seconds longer.

Still nothing.

His fingers curled slightly.

The memory of yesterday wasn't clear.

Not completely.

He remembered standing.

He remembered the bodies.

And something else.

A pull.

Wang Lin lowered his hand.

He stood up.

There was only one way to understand it.

The streets were quieter than usual.

Morning hadn't fully arrived yet. The few people who moved did so quickly, avoiding eye contact, avoiding delay.

No one paid attention.

Wang Lin walked deeper into the lower district.

Not toward the stalls.

Not toward the main streets.

Somewhere else.

The buildings here were worse.

Walls broken. Roofs half-collapsed. Entire sections abandoned.

This wasn't a place people lived.

It was a place they avoided.

Wang Lin slowed his steps.

The air felt heavier.

Not in a way that could be explained.

Just—

Different.

He stopped.

There it was again.

That feeling.

This time, it didn't come suddenly.

It built slowly.

Like something recognizing something else.

Wang Lin's gaze shifted.

A shape moved behind a broken structure.

Low.

Fast.

Not human.

He didn't step back.

The movement stopped.

Then—

It appeared.

A creature.

Thin. Uneven. Its limbs stretched slightly too long, joints bending at angles that didn't look right. Its skin was dark, almost blending with the shadows around it.

Its eyes locked onto him.

Neither moved.

Wang Lin stood still.

The creature tilted its head slightly.

Watching.

Then it stepped forward.

Its movement was quiet.

But not slow.

Wang Lin didn't retreat.

The feeling inside him changed.

It wasn't hunger.

It was… focus.

The creature lunged.

Fast.

Wang Lin moved.

Not quickly.

Not efficiently.

Just enough.

The creature's claws scraped against the wall behind him as he stepped aside.

Dust fell.

It turned immediately.

Faster this time.

Wang Lin raised his arm instinctively.

The impact hit his forearm.

Pain spread sharply.

He didn't react.

His body moved again.

Not controlled.

Not planned.

Just—

Responding.

The creature attacked again.

Closer.

Its breath was foul.

Its movements erratic.

Wang Lin's back hit the wall.

There was no space left.

For a moment—

Everything slowed.

The creature moved forward.

And something inside him responded.

Not fear.

Recognition.

His hand lifted.

The same way as before.

The air shifted.

The creature stopped.

Just for a moment.

Its body trembled.

Its eyes widened slightly.

Wang Lin didn't move.

He didn't need to.

The pull returned.

Stronger than before.

Clearer.

Not toward the creature's body—

Toward something inside it.

Wang Lin's fingers tightened.

The distortion appeared again.

More visible this time.

The creature let out a low, broken sound.

Its body jerked violently.

Then—

Stillness.

Silence filled the space.

Wang Lin remained where he stood.

His breathing was steady.

Too steady.

The pain in his arm was still there.

But it felt distant.

Something else filled the space.

Warmth.

Not outside.

Inside.

His body felt… heavier.

Not weak.

Just—

Different.

Wang Lin lowered his hand slowly.

The creature's body lay still.

But something about it had changed.

It looked… empty.

Like whatever had been inside it was gone.

Wang Lin stared at it for a moment.

Then looked down at his hand.

No mark.

No change.

And yet—

He knew.

This wasn't the same as before.

This wasn't human.

Wang Lin stepped away from the body.

His steps were slow.

Measured.

Not because he was thinking.

But because something inside him was.

He didn't go far.

A few streets away, he stopped again.

The feeling inside him hadn't faded this time.

It remained.

Quiet.

Stable.

Wang Lin leaned slightly against the wall.

His eyes lowered.

His breathing slowed.

Then—

He noticed it.

Something faint.

At the edge of his awareness.

A presence.

Not outside.

Inside.

Wang Lin's gaze sharpened slightly.

It wasn't a voice.

It wasn't a thought.

It was—

A space.

Small.

Dark.

And within it—

Something moved.

Not clearly.

Not fully formed.

But there.

Wang Lin didn't react.

He didn't try to understand it.

He simply observed.

After a moment—

It faded.

The street returned.

The city returned.

Everything remained the same.

Wang Lin straightened slightly.

The hunger was still there.

But now—

It waited.

He turned and walked back toward the outer streets.

The academy area would be active by now.

People would be there.

Movement.

Noise.

Wang Lin didn't know why—

But his steps moved in that direction.

As he reached the wider street again—

He saw them.

Students.

More than yesterday.

Groups forming.

Energy moving between them.

Different.

Wang Lin stopped at a distance.

His gaze remained steady.

Then—

That feeling returned.

Stronger.

Not pulling.

But reacting.

To them.

Wang Lin's eyes narrowed slightly.

Something about this—

Didn't belong.

Not to them.

To him.

And for the first time—

Wang Lin understood one thing clearly.

This power—

Wasn't like theirs.

It wasn't controlled.

It wasn't taught.

It didn't follow rules.

He turned away.

Behind him, the academy continued as usual.

Unaware.

Unchanging.

And somewhere within Wang Lin—

That dark space shifted again.

Quiet.

Waiting.

What didn't belong—

Had already begun to grow.
