Chapter 2 - Chapter 1 — Hunger Doesn’t End

Morning came without warmth.

Light reached the lower district slowly, slipping between broken rooftops and cracked walls, never quite touching the ground the way it did in the upper city. What little sunlight managed to pass through felt thin, almost distant.

Wang Lin was already awake.

He hadn't slept much.

It wasn't unusual.

He leaned against the rough wall behind him, eyes half-open, watching the empty street ahead. The same place as last night. Nothing had changed.

Except something had.

The hunger was still there.

But it felt… different.

He didn't understand it.

It wasn't weaker. Not exactly. But it no longer pressed against him the same way. The sharp edge of it had dulled, replaced by something quieter. Something that lingered instead of clawed.

He sat still for a while, trying to make sense of it.

There was nothing to hold onto.

No explanation.

Wang Lin pushed himself up slowly.

The ground beneath him was cold. His muscles felt stiff, but he ignored it. That wasn't new either.

What was new—

He looked down at his hand.

For a moment, he just stared.

Nothing.

No change.

No mark.

His fingers curled slightly.

They felt normal.

He lowered his hand.

The street was beginning to fill.

Not crowded. Never crowded down here in the morning. But people were moving—quiet figures passing by, some alone, some in pairs. Most kept their heads down. No one spoke unless they had to.

No one looked at each other for long.

Wang Lin stepped into the street.

No destination.

Just movement.

The smell of food drifted faintly from somewhere ahead.

His body reacted immediately.

The hunger sharpened again.

He followed it.

A small stall stood at the edge of a wider street. Nothing more than a wooden board and a metal pot set over weak flames. Steam rose slowly, carrying the scent with it.

People stood nearby.

Not many.

Just enough.

Wang Lin stopped a short distance away.

He didn't step closer.

He already knew.

Coins exchanged hands. Bowls were passed. Steam rose.

The line moved slowly.

He watched.

After a few moments, his gaze shifted away.

There was no point standing there.

He turned and walked in the opposite direction.

The streets narrowed again.

Buildings leaned slightly, as if they had been standing too long without support. The deeper he went, the quieter it became.

This part of the district didn't have stalls.

Or people.

Only sounds.

Distant. Unclear.

Wang Lin slowed his steps.

There it was again.

That feeling.

It didn't come from his stomach.

Not exactly.

He stopped.

His head turned slightly.

Something ahead.

A faint movement.

A shadow shifting behind a broken doorway.

Wang Lin didn't rush.

He walked forward at the same pace.

The doorway came into view.

Half-collapsed. Dark inside.

The smell reached him first.

Not as strong as last night.

But still there.

Blood.

He stood at the entrance.

Inside, a figure lay on the ground.

Not dead.

Moving.

Barely.

Wang Lin didn't step in.

Not yet.

His eyes remained on the body.

Watching.

The feeling returned.

Stronger this time.

Not hunger.

Something else.

His breathing changed slightly.

The body inside shifted.

A weak sound escaped.

Wang Lin stepped forward.

The air felt heavier.

He stopped a few steps away.

The person on the ground was younger than the man from last night.

Not by much.

But enough.

Their eyes opened slowly.

Unfocused.

Then—

They saw him.

For a moment, there was confusion.

Then fear.

"…help…"

Wang Lin didn't answer.

His gaze lowered briefly.

Then rose again.

The feeling inside him sharpened.

Clearer now.

It wasn't random.

It was pointing.

Toward the person.

His hand moved.

Not fast.

Not slow.

Just… natural.

The moment his fingers lifted—

Something responded.

The air shifted.

Subtle.

But real.

The body on the ground jerked slightly.

Their breathing faltered.

Wang Lin didn't move closer.

He didn't need to.

The feeling inside him pulled.

And something answered.

The space between them distorted faintly.

Like heat over stone.

The person's eyes widened.

Their mouth opened—

No sound came out.

Then—

Stillness.

Complete.

Wang Lin stood there.

Unmoving.

The feeling faded again.

Not gone.

Just quiet.

He lowered his hand.

His gaze remained on the body for a moment longer.

Then he turned.

He didn't look back.

The streets felt different now.

Not because they had changed.

But because something else had.

Wang Lin walked without direction.

But his steps didn't slow.

The hunger was still there.

But it no longer controlled him.

That should have been enough.

It wasn't.

By the time the sun had risen higher, the lower district had begun to stir more noticeably.

Voices returned.

Movement increased.

Life continued.

Wang Lin stood near the edge of a larger street, watching from a distance.

Across from him—

A group of young people gathered near a stone building.

Cleaner than the rest.

More stable.

An academy branch.

Not one of the main ones.

Those were in the upper districts.

This was smaller.

Less important.

But still—

It was something.

Wang Lin watched them.

Their clothes were better.

Their posture different.

Even the way they stood.

Some talked.

Some laughed.

None of them looked down the street.

Not toward him.

That was normal.

Wang Lin turned away.

He had been here before.

Not inside.

Just close enough to see.

To understand.

This world wasn't built for people like him.

That was clear.

Still—

He didn't leave immediately.

His gaze shifted slightly.

Something moved near the academy gate.

A figure stepped forward.

Clean clothes.

Calm posture.

Different.

Wang Lin's eyes remained on them for a moment.

Then—

The feeling returned.

Not strong.

But there.

Different from before.

It didn't pull.

It… reacted.

Wang Lin's gaze narrowed slightly.

The figure paused.

Just for a moment.

Then continued walking.

Nothing else happened.

But something had.

Wang Lin looked away.

He didn't understand it.

Not yet.

The day passed slowly.

By the time evening approached, the sky had already begun to dim again.

The light faded quickly in the lower district.

It always did.

Wang Lin returned to the same area as before.

Not by choice.

Just habit.

He leaned against the wall once more.

The hunger was still there.

But now—

It waited.

His hand moved slightly.

Then stopped.

He didn't raise it.

Not yet.

Somewhere above—

Beyond the reach of broken streets and dim light—

The twelve families continued as they always had.

Unaware.

Unchanging.

And far below—

In a place they would never look—

Something had begun to move.

Not loudly.

Not suddenly.

But steadily.

Wang Lin closed his eyes briefly.

Then opened them again.

The night had returned.

And this time—

He didn't feel as weak.

That was enough.

For now.
