Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: WHISPERS BENEATH THE CROWN

The grand hall no longer roared. It breathed low, heavy, controlled.

The masses were gone. Only silk remained, and steel hidden beneath it. Soft footsteps echoed across the polished marble floor as rows of nobles stood in quiet clusters, their jeweled robes shimmering beneath golden chandeliers. Leaders from distant lands lingered near the edges, their eyes sharp and observant.

At the center stood the child.

Takashi.

Small. Silent. Too silent.

A faint ripple passed through the hall as heads turned.

"They're bringing him forward."

"Finally…"

The air tightened.

Ema stepped forward, each step steady but heavy. Her grip instinctively tightened around the child in her arms. Takashi did not cry, did not move, did not react. He simply breathed, as if detached from everything around him.

On the opposite side, Hayato stood surrounded by nobles. Hands reached out to him, voices overlapping one another.

"Congratulations, Supreme Leader Hayato."

"A historic day."

"A blessed heir."

He nodded and smiled a perfect ruler's mask. But his eyes flickered once, briefly, toward the child before returning to the nobles.

The whispers never stopped.

"That's him?"

"The heir?"

"Why does it feel so…"

A noble leaned closer, narrowing his eyes.

"Empty?"

Another scoffed. "No presence… not even a trace of aura."

A colder voice followed, "A demon-born, perhaps."

Ema's fingers tightened slightly.

Beside her, Kazumi stood completely still. Too still. His presence alone cut through the crowd like a blade. As the Supreme Leader of the Eastern Land, his aura was naturally overwhelming but now, it was restrained, contained with effort.

Tsugumi stood beside him, her hand resting gently over her abdomen. Her gaze softened at the sight of the child, but then trembled slightly at the unnatural silence surrounding him.

"Brother…" she whispered.

Kazumi did not respond. He had already sensed it.

The absence.

Not weak. Not hidden.

Just… nothing.

Another whisper slipped through the crowd.

"Even commoners awakened last night."

"Ninety percent… maybe more."

"Even the lowest ranks felt something."

A pause followed as all eyes returned to Takashi.

"But him?"

"Nothing."

A noblewoman covered her lips. "Unlucky."

Another voice muttered, "A disgrace to two great bloodlines."

Kazumi's fingers twitched.

Crack.

The marble beneath his foot fractured slightly.

Ema flinched, just barely. "Control yourself," she murmured without looking.

Kazumi exhaled slowly, forcing the pressure back down. But his eyes still burned with restrained fury.

At the center, Takashi remained still. Unaware. Or perhaps… aware in a way no one could understand.

Minutes passed as the murmurs rose and fell like waves crashing against invisible walls.

Then

Clap.

A sharp, commanding sound cut through the hall.

Silence fell instantly.

Hayato stepped forward. The announcement had already been made. The heir had been revealed. The celebration was complete.

There was nothing left.

One by one, the leaders began to leave. Silk dragged softly across the stone floor as boots echoed into the distance. Doors opened and closed, each sound marking the end of the gathering.

Thud. Thud.

Until only silence remained.

Later, the grand hall stood empty, cold and lifeless as if nothing had ever happened.

Inside a dim chamber, Ema sat at the edge of her bed with Takashi resting in her arms. He fed quietly, fragile yet alive.

Her fingers gently brushed his cheek.

"You're safe now," she whispered softly.

Her shoulders trembled once before becoming still again.

Outside, the world had already begun to change.

In another chamber, a long stone table was surrounded by leaders. The air was heavy with power, thick enough to suffocate.

"It's spreading faster than predicted."

"Ninety-five percent confirmed."

"In a single night."

Silence followed.

Then

Bang.

A fist slammed onto the table. "Impossible."

A calm voice responded, "Yet it happened."

A scroll was unrolled, revealing numbers and rank distributions.

"D-rank to C-rank dominates the majority. But…"

A pause.

"One percent is approaching SSS."

But still not confirmed…

The room grew tense. That number was wrong. Too fast. Too soon.

"And the rest?" one leader asked.

"The remaining five percent will awaken soon. The world will reach full saturation."

Silence settled heavily across the room.

"Then control becomes impossible."

No one argued.

Because it already was.

Outside, the world continued to move. Borders no longer mattered. People traveled freely, abandoning everything they once knew.

Beyond the lands, vast forests stretched endlessly. Dark. Untouched. Waiting.

A low growl echoed from deep within.

Monsters were awakening.

Energy pulsed through the earth Shin-Noa growing, breathing, expanding.

Back inside, the discussion continued.

"We establish a union."

"An international authority."

"Control. Observation. Regulation."

Heads nodded in agreement.

"And a university."

The word carried weight.

"We gather the strong, train them, shape them… or they will shape the world instead."

Silence followed.

Agreement came without words.

Another scroll was opened.

"Weapon usage…"

The atmosphere turned cold.

"Strictly forbidden."

"Any attempt to recreate old-world technology…"

A voice cut in, low and absolute.

"Will be erased."

No one objected.

Because everyone remembered the past.

Fire. Ash. Destruction.

A world that had nearly ended.

"We will not repeat it."

Hours passed as discussions continued, decisions forming and breaking.

Finally

"We reconvene in a few days. With complete frameworks."

The meeting ended not finished, but paused.

Outside the chamber, Hayato stood alone for a moment. His shoulders lowered slightly as he closed his eyes.

"Safe…"

The word slipped out quietly.

Then the moment was gone. The mask returned.

He turned and walked.

The palace doors creaked open as he entered familiar halls filled with silence.

Inside the chamber, Ema sat quietly with Takashi in her arms. The child's tiny fingers curled gently, unaware of everything surrounding him.

For now.

Hayato stepped closer and paused, watching them.

"He's asleep?" he asked.

Ema nodded. "He didn't cry."

A long silence followed.

Then

Knock. Knock.

A servant entered, head lowered.

"My Lord…"

A pause.

"A visitor has arrived."

Hayato frowned slightly. "At this hour?"

The servant hesitated.

"A… Legendary Master."

Silence fell.

Then Hayato moved.

Fast.

The air shifted as he turned and walked out without hesitation.

The door slammed open.

Bang.

And he was gone.

Ema's gaze lingered on the empty doorway before slowly returning to Takashi. Her grip tightened just slightly.

Outside, footsteps echoed through the halls fast, sharp, purposeful.

Toward someone…

Waiting in the shadows.
