Chapter 8 - No Way Out

The moment the footsteps drew closer, Ethan already knew there was no avoiding what was about to happen. The quiet space that had given him a brief sense of relief only seconds ago now felt like a trap, the distance from the school no longer a comfort but something that made everything more exposed. As he turned slightly, the figures coming into view confirmed his fear, their expressions carrying the same careless confidence he had seen too many times already.

Ryan walked at the front, his pace unhurried, his gaze fixed directly on Ethan as if he had been expecting to find him there. The others followed behind him, spreading out slightly as they approached, their presence filling the space in a way that made escape feel impossible without even a word being said.

Ethan's body tensed, his hands curling at his sides as he instinctively took a small step back. The brief calm he had felt moments ago disappeared completely, replaced by a familiar tightness in his chest that made it harder to breathe. He didn't look at them directly for long, but it was enough to know this wasn't a coincidence.

They had come for him.

Ryan stopped a short distance away, his lips curving into a faint smile that didn't reach his eyes. For a moment, he said nothing, simply looking at Ethan as if taking in his reaction, as if enjoying the way the tension had already settled into his posture.

"So this is where you ran off to," Ryan said finally, his voice calm, almost conversational. "I was wondering why you disappeared so quickly."

A few of the others chuckled under their breath, the sound quiet but deliberate.

Ethan didn't respond. He kept his gaze lowered, focusing on the ground just ahead of him, hoping that staying silent would make this end faster. It never did, but it was the only thing he knew how to do.

Ryan didn't seem bothered by the lack of response. If anything, it only seemed to encourage him. His attention shifted briefly to Lucas, standing beside Ethan, and something in his expression changed slightly, the amusement turning into something sharper.

"And you," Ryan added, tilting his head slightly. "You're really making this your problem now?"

Lucas didn't move. His posture remained relaxed, but there was nothing passive about the way he stood there. His gaze met Ryan's without hesitation, steady and unreadable in a way that made the air between them feel heavier.

"It already is," Lucas replied.

The answer was simple, but it carried enough weight to make the group pause, even if only for a second.

Ryan let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head slightly as if he found the situation more amusing than anything else. "You're serious," he said. "All this… over him?"

The way he said it made something twist in Ethan's chest, but he stayed silent, his fingers tightening slightly.

Lucas didn't look at Ethan.

"Leave," he said instead, his tone calm but firm.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then Ryan took a step forward.

The movement was slow, deliberate, closing the distance in a way that made the tension sharper. The others shifted with him, their earlier relaxed stance gone now, replaced by something more focused, more intentional.

"You really don't get it, do you?" Ryan said, his voice lowering slightly. "This isn't something you can just step into and control. It's already done."

Ethan swallowed hard, the words hitting harder than he expected.

Lucas didn't react the way Ryan might have wanted. His expression didn't change, his stance didn't shift. If anything, he seemed even more certain now.

"Then you're done," Lucas replied.

The response landed heavily.

For a brief second, the silence that followed felt almost unreal, like the world had paused just long enough for the weight of those words to settle. Ryan's expression shifted, the faint amusement disappearing completely this time, replaced by something colder.

"You think you can decide that?" he asked.

Lucas didn't answer immediately.

He stepped forward instead.

It wasn't aggressive, not in the way a fight begins, but it was enough to change the balance between them. The distance that had allowed Ryan to control the situation was gone, replaced by something equal, something that made the moment feel less certain.

Ethan felt it.

The shift.

The difference.

His breathing slowed slightly, though the tension didn't disappear. He wasn't used to this. He wasn't used to someone standing in front of him instead of stepping aside, someone pushing back instead of letting things happen.

Ryan noticed it too.

His gaze flickered briefly toward Ethan before returning to Lucas, as if reassessing something. The confidence in his posture didn't disappear, but it wasn't as effortless as before.

Behind him, one of the boys muttered something under his breath, clearly impatient, but Ryan raised a hand slightly, stopping him without looking away.

For a moment, it seemed like he might push further.

Then he exhaled.

"Fine," he said, though his tone made it clear he wasn't finished. "Keep playing hero. Let's see how long that lasts."

He took a step back.

The tension didn't break, but it shifted again, settling into something quieter, something that felt less immediate but no less dangerous. Ryan glanced at Ethan one last time, his expression unreadable now, before turning away.

"Come on."

The group followed him, their footsteps fading as they moved down the street, their presence lingering even after they were gone.

Silence returned.

Ethan didn't move at first. His body still felt tense, his thoughts struggling to catch up with what had just happened. Slowly, he let out a breath, his shoulders dropping slightly as the pressure eased, though not completely.

Lucas stepped back, creating a small distance between them again.

"They're not done," he said.

Ethan nodded faintly. "I know."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The quiet felt different now, not as heavy as before, but not comfortable either. There was something unresolved hanging in the air, something that hadn't ended with Ryan walking away.

Ethan looked down, his thoughts tangled. "You shouldn't have done that," he said after a while. "Now they'll just come after you too."

Lucas shrugged slightly, as if the idea didn't bother him. "They already decided that."

"That's not the same," Ethan replied, his voice tighter now. "This is worse."

Lucas didn't argue.

Instead, he looked at Ethan more carefully, his expression softening just slightly. "And what about you?" he asked. "You were just going to let it keep happening?"

Ethan didn't answer.

Because he didn't have one.

The silence stretched again, but this time it wasn't empty. It carried something heavier, something that forced Ethan to confront a truth he had been avoiding. He had been letting it happen. Not because he wanted to, but because he didn't know how to stop it.

Lucas exhaled quietly. "You don't have to handle it alone."

Ethan's fingers tightened slightly at his sides. "I always have."

"Not anymore."

The words were simple.

But they stayed.

Ethan looked up at him, something uncertain flickering in his eyes, something that hadn't been there before. He didn't respond immediately, but he didn't look away either.

For the first time, the distance between them didn't feel so wide.

And even though nothing was fixed, even though the situation hadn't improved, something had shifted in a way that neither of them could ignore.

The problem wasn't over.

But neither were they.
