Chapter 11 - When Rumors Start to Speak

By the time Ethan stepped into the classroom that morning, something felt off. It wasn't loud or obvious, but it was there in the way conversations lowered just slightly when he walked in, in the glances that came and disappeared too quickly, and in the strange tension hanging in the air. He kept his head down as usual, moving quietly toward his seat, but the feeling followed him, settling in his chest in a way he couldn't ignore. He sat down and placed his bag on the desk, trying to focus on something simple, something normal, but his thoughts kept circling back to that same uneasy feeling, like something had already started without him knowing. It didn't take long before the reason became clear.

"Looks like someone's getting attention lately."

The voice came from behind him, casual but sharp enough to cut through the quiet. Ethan froze slightly before turning his head, already knowing who it was. Ryan was leaning back in his chair, watching him with that familiar, almost amused expression that never meant anything good. A few students nearby glanced over, pretending not to listen while clearly paying attention, their curiosity making the moment feel heavier than it should have been. Ethan looked away again, trying to keep his voice steady. "I don't know what you mean," he said quietly, but even to himself, it didn't sound convincing.

Ryan let out a soft laugh, the kind that carried more meaning than the words themselves. "Really? You don't?" he replied, leaning forward slightly as if he had all the time in the world. "That's funny, because everyone else seems to know." A murmur passed through the nearby students, low voices blending into something that sounded like gossip spreading faster than it should. Someone mentioned Lucas's name, another added something about how often they'd been seen together, and even though the words weren't loud, they were clear enough. Each one reached Ethan whether he wanted to hear them or not, making his grip on the edge of the desk tighten slightly.

"I heard they've been sticking close," one voice whispered from the side.

"Yeah… like really close," another added, followed by a quiet laugh that didn't try to hide anything.

Ethan felt the heat rise to his face. He didn't need them to say it directly. The implication was already there, hanging in the air where everyone could feel it. He kept his eyes down, focusing on the surface of his desk like it would somehow make everything disappear, but the silence only seemed to invite more attention, more whispers, more looks that he couldn't avoid no matter how hard he tried.

Ryan rested his arm on Ethan's desk without asking, lowering his voice just enough to make it feel more personal, more deliberate. "So tell me," he said, his tone almost curious now, "is it true?" The question hung between them, simple on the surface but heavy underneath, carrying everything that had already been said without needing to repeat it.

Ethan finally looked up, his expression tense, his thoughts scattered between denial and something he didn't fully understand yet. "No," he said quickly, almost too quickly, as if saying it faster would make it more believable.

Ryan's smile didn't change. If anything, it deepened slightly. "Then why does it look like it is?" he asked, his voice calm, like he was just pointing out something obvious.

Before Ethan could respond, the sound of a chair moving beside him cut through the moment. It wasn't loud, but it was enough to shift the atmosphere immediately. Lucas had arrived. He didn't rush, didn't react dramatically, but his presence alone was enough to change the balance of the situation. He glanced briefly at Ethan, just for a second, before his attention moved to Ryan.

"Move," Lucas said.

The word was simple, his tone even, but there was something firm in it that made the nearby students go quiet without being told. It wasn't loud authority, but it didn't need to be. The meaning was clear.

Ryan didn't move immediately. He leaned back slightly, acting relaxed even though the tension had already shifted. "Relax," he said lightly. "We're just talking."

Lucas didn't react to the excuse. His gaze dropped briefly to Ryan's arm resting on Ethan's desk before returning to his face. There was no change in his expression, but there was a quiet pressure in the way he looked at him. "You're done talking."

For a moment, neither of them moved. Ryan held his gaze as if deciding whether to push further, whether to turn it into something bigger, but the hesitation was there, small but noticeable. Then, with a quiet scoff, he pulled his arm back and stood up.

"Didn't know you cared that much," he said, his tone casual again, but not as confident as before. His friends followed him as he walked away, their attention already shifting elsewhere, even though the tension they left behind didn't disappear as quickly.

The classroom slowly returned to its usual rhythm, conversations picking up again, but quieter now, more careful. The whispers didn't stop completely, but they changed, losing some of their boldness as if something had reminded them to stay in line.

Ethan remained still for a moment, his heart beating faster than it should, his thoughts tangled in a way he couldn't sort out immediately. He didn't look at Lucas right away, unsure of what to say, unsure of how things had shifted so quickly.

Lucas pulled out his chair and sat down like nothing had happened, his movements calm, his attention already drifting back to the front of the class. For a few seconds, the silence between them felt heavier than everything that had just happened.

"You okay?" Lucas asked quietly.

Ethan nodded, even though the answer didn't feel completely true. "I'm fine," he said, keeping his voice low.

Lucas didn't argue. He leaned back slightly, his voice dropping just enough so only Ethan could hear him. "They'll get bored," he said.

Ethan let out a small breath, his fingers still resting on the edge of his desk. "What if they don't?" he asked, the question coming out softer than he intended.

Lucas turned his head slightly, meeting his gaze this time. "Then they deal with me."

The answer came easily, without hesitation, like it wasn't something he had to think about. That alone made Ethan pause, caught off guard by how natural it sounded, as if protecting him wasn't a decision but something that had already been decided.

For the first time since he walked into the classroom, the tightness in Ethan's chest eased, just a little. The whispers were still there, the rumors hadn't disappeared, and he knew they wouldn't stop anytime soon. But they didn't feel as overwhelming as they had before.

Because now, whether he fully understood it or not, something had changed.

He wasn't facing it alone.
