Chapter 54 - Chapter 54: The Shadow of the Sovereign and the Golden Ascension

The air in the Fuchsia Gym was no longer just air. It was a thick, invisible curtain of pressure that tasted of ozone and ancient herbs. The sand underfoot felt like ground glass, and the jagged stone pillars cast long, twisting shadows that seemed to move on their own. Across the field, Koga stood with his arms crossed, his purple scarf fluttering in a draft that shouldn't have existed in an enclosed room.

"You speak of data, Miss Regina," Koga's voice echoed, devoid of emotion. "But a ninja knows that the only data that matters is the heartbeat of your enemy—and how quickly you can stop it."

He didn't reach for a Pokéball. He simply flicked his wrist, and a mass of purple sludge materialized on the field. It didn't emerge; it existed.

[Data Scan: Muk]

Rank: CHAMPION

Level: 50

Aura: Corrosive Overlord

The Muk was massive, a glistening mountain of toxic waste that smelled of rotting sulfur. Its eyes were tiny, yellow slits of pure, predatory intent.

I felt a bead of sweat roll down my neck. Level 50. A true Champion. This wasn't a gym match; this was an execution.

"Aqua, center stage!" I cried.

My newly evolved Wartortle appeared, his feathery ears twitching. He saw the Muk and immediately lowered his center of gravity. He didn't look back at me. He didn't need to. He felt the weight of the level gap—eight levels of raw experience stood between him and that sludge.

"A ninja strikes from the darkness of the mind," Koga intoned. "Muk, Sludge Wave!"

The Muk didn't move its body; it simply vibrated. A wall of purple filth erupted from its base, rushing across the sand like a tidal wave of acid.

"Ocean Heal!" I shouted.

Aqua didn't wait. He spun like a top, retreating into his shell. As he spun, he released a Rain Dance, a localized storm cloud forming instantly above the arena. Thick, heavy droplets began to fall. Simultaneously, a ring of shimmering blue water—Aqua Ring—manifested around his waist, and a soft, sparkling mist of Life Dew coated his shell.

The Sludge Wave slammed into him. The sound was like a car crash. Aqua was sent skidding backward, his shell sizzling from the acidity.

"Finish it with Gunk Shot!"

The Muk spat a massive, high-pressure wad of toxic garbage. It hit Aqua square in the chest. Any other Pokémon would have collapsed. But Aqua stood his ground. The rain hitting his shell triggered his Rain Dish ability, the Aqua Ring pulsed with light, and the Life Dew continued to knit his bruised muscles back together. He was a fountain of perpetual recovery.

"Water Pulse! Keep the rhythm!"

Aqua fired a concentrated sphere of water. It slammed into the Muk, causing it to ripple and lose its shape for a second. The battle became a grueling war of attrition. Muk hit with the force of a wrecking ball—Sludge Bomb, Pound, Mud Bomb—but every time Aqua looked like he was about to fall, the triple-layer of healing pulled him back from the brink.

Aqua's Torrent ability kicked in as his health dipped. His eyes glowed a fierce, deep blue. He launched a final, spiraling Hydro Pump through the rain. The high-pressure jet cut through the Muk like a laser, scattering its core.

The Muk slumped, its yellow eyes fading as it dissolved into a motionless puddle.

"Muk is unable to battle!" Aya called out, her voice sharp with surprise.

I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. Aqua was panting, his ears drooping, his shell covered in chemical burns, but he had done it. He had toppled a Champion.

Koga didn't look upset. He looked... satisfied. "A commendable display of resilience. You turned the battlefield into a sanctuary. But a ninja knows that a sanctuary is just a cage waiting to be broken."

He recalled his Muk and immediately threw his second ball. "Nidoqueen, eliminate the threat!"

[Data Scan: Nidoqueen]

Rank: CHAMPION

Level: 52

The Nidoqueen was a fortress of blue armor. Before I could even open my mouth to command a defense, Koga's hand swept forward.

"Poison Jab."

The Nidoqueen blurred. She didn't run; she vanished and reappeared directly in front of Aqua. Her glowing purple claw drove deep into Aqua's shoulder. It was a surgical strike. Aqua, already drained from the marathon with Muk, didn't even have the strength to retreat into his shell. He tumbled backward, eyes rolling into his head.

"Wartortle is unable to battle!"

"A ninja does not let a threat exist," Koga said coldly. "Your Wartortle's healing was a problem. Now, it is gone."

I recalled Aqua, my fingers trembling as I touched the Luxury Ball. "You did amazing, buddy. Rest now." I looked at Koga. He was playing for keeps. He sent out his heavy hitter early to demoralize me.

"If you want to end this fast, Leader, you picked the wrong opponent," I hissed. "Nugget, it's time to show them why you're the Ace!"

A flash of brilliant, crimson light filled the room. My Combusken landed on the sand, her feathers a deep, blood-red color that shimmered with an exotic, metallic sheen. She let out a piercing screech, her feet scratching the ground.

The leftover Life Dew from Aqua's earlier move was still misting the air. As Nugget stepped into the center, the mist settled on her, giving her a small, initial burst of vitality and a shimmering shield of moisture.

"Nidoqueen, Earth Power!"

"Magma Spit!"

The Nidoqueen slammed her fists into the ground, causing the earth to erupt in geysers of mud and stone. Nugget leaped into the air, her throat glowing a terrifying, molten orange. She spat a glob of liquid fire—not just flames, but white-hot sludge that looked like it had been scooped from a volcano.

The Magma Spit collided with the earth, melting the rock instantly. The splash hit the Nidoqueen's shoulder, and the blue queen let out a roar of pain as the Burn condition took hold.

But Nidoqueen was a tank. She lunged through the steam, her Poison Point ability bristling. She connected with a Body Slam, pinning Nugget to a stone pillar. Nugget let out a pained squawk, and I saw the purple veins of Poison creep up her neck.

The two powerhouses traded blows that shook the dojo. Double Kick against Superpower. Flamethrower against Ice Beam. Nugget was burning with the heat of a dying star, her inner flame reaching temperatures that made the sand turn to glass. But the poison was a ticking clock.

Nugget landed a final, leaping Sky Uppercut, her fist wreathed in white-hot Magma Spit energy. It connected with the Nidoqueen's jaw, sending the blue giant crashing into the far wall.

The Nidoqueen fainted. Nugget stood for a second, her crimson feathers dulling, her body shivering. Then, the poison finally reached her heart. She collapsed forward, fainted, just as the last of the Life Dew mist evaporated.

"Both Pokémon are unable to battle!"

I recalled Nugget, my heart aching. She had taken down the highest-level Pokémon on his team. We were down to the final round.

Koga stepped forward, a dark, thin Pokéball in his hand. "You have fought well, Miss Regina. But the final act of a ninja's play is always the most lethal. Arbok, weave the web!"

[Data Scan: Arbok]

Rank: CHAMPION

Level: 48

The Arbok was massive, its hood expanded to show a terrifying face-like pattern. It didn't hiss; it rattled, a sound that made my teeth ache.

"I'm counting on you, Goldie!" I shouted.

My Shiny Charmander appeared, her golden scales reflecting the candlelight. She looked tiny compared to the cobra. Eight levels. This was the biggest gap yet.

Koga chuckled, a dry, rasping sound. "A ninja has his own set of tricks, Miss Regina. Arbok, Toxic!"

The Arbok was a blur. It moved with a serpentine speed that defied the eyes. Before Goldie could even draw breath for an ember, the Arbok had circled her and spat a glob of concentrated venom directly into her eyes. Goldie shrieked, clutching her face as the Badly Poisoned status took hold.

"Now, Venoshock!"

The Arbok lunged, its fangs glowing with purple energy. Venoshock deals double damage to a poisoned target. It slammed into Goldie, sending her flying across the arena.

Goldie struggled to stand. Her golden scales were bruised, her tail flame was flickering dangerously low. Arbok didn't let up—Bite, Wrap, Acid Spray. It was a one-sided slaughter.

"Is this the 'Champion Potential' you boasted of?" Koga asked. "A flickering candle in a hurricane?"

Goldie looked at me. Her eyes were clouded with pain, but inside them, I saw a spark of pure, unadulterated defiance. She didn't want to lose. She refused to be the "weak link."

"GOLDIE, DON'T GIVE UP!" I screamed. "YOU ARE A CHAMPION! SHOW HIM THE HEAT!"

Suddenly, the air in the gym grew cold—then white-hot.

A blinding pillar of white light erupted from Goldie. Her body elongated, her limbs grew sturdier, and a single, sharp horn sprouted from her head. The light was so intense it forced Koga to look away.

When the light faded, a Charmeleon stood there. Her scales were no longer just gold; they were a burnished, metallic amber. Her tail flame roared into a massive bonfire.

Blaze Activated.

"Magma Spit!" I yelled.

Goldie opened her mouth and unleashed a torrent of molten fire. The Arbok tried to dodge, but the heat was too intense, the area of effect too wide. The Arbok's hood was singed, its speed slowing as the air around it began to shimmer with heat.

"End it! Dragon Rush!"

It was a move she shouldn't have known yet—a legacy of her high-potential bloodline. Goldie cloaked herself in a blue, draconic aura. She didn't run; she flew, a golden meteor of rage.

The Arbok tried to counter with a Gunk Shot, but Goldie tore through the poison, slamming into the Arbok's chest with the force of a falling building.

BOOM!

The dust settled. The Arbok was pinned under Goldie's claws, its eyes spinning.

"Arbok is unable to battle! The winner is the challenger, Regina!"

Goldie let out a triumphant roar, her tail flame scorching the ceiling, before she slumped down, exhausted but victorious.

Koga stood in silence for a long time. Then, he walked over to me, his footsteps silent on the sand. He didn't look disappointed anymore. He looked... impressed.

"You possess a rare talent, Miss Regina," Koga said, reaching into his vest. He pulled out a heart-shaped, pink badge. "You do not just train Pokémon; you ignite their souls. You have earned the Soul Badge."

He paused, a small, knowing glint in his eye. "And perhaps, the next time you write an article on 'Status Effect Analysis,' you might mention that a ninja's greatest weapon isn't poison... it's the surprise of a student who surpasses the master."

I froze. He knew? He had been reading my G-Pro papers?

I took the badge, my face flushing. "I'll... I'll keep that in mind, Leader Koga."

I walked out of the gym, the Soul Badge heavy in my hand. I had five badges, a newly evolved Charmeleon, and the respect of a ninja master.

Now, if I could just find a way out of here that didn't involve a slide.
