Chapter 87
The council chamber emptied slower than usual.
Voices lingered, low and controlled, as members gathered in small groups, continuing discussions that no longer required formality. Papers were collected, chairs shifted, footsteps echoed lightly across the polished floor.
But beneath all of that—
Something else remained.
Alvira stayed seated for a moment longer than necessary, her fingers resting lightly against the edge of the table as if grounding herself in something steady.
She could feel it.
That awareness.
Not overwhelming.
Not confusing in the same way as before.
Just… present.
Clearer.
When she finally stood, her movements were calm, measured, but her eyes lifted almost instinctively.
Zack.
He was already looking at her.
Not by accident.
Not briefly.
He did not look away this time.
And neither did she.
Across the room, Ray noticed.
Of course he did.
But this time—
He did not move.
He remained where he was, his expression composed, his posture relaxed, as if none of it affected him.
Only his eyes gave him away.
Lisa stepped slightly closer to Hiccup.
Lisa said quietly, "He is not stopping it."
Hiccup followed her gaze.
Hiccup said, "No."
Lisa said, "That is new."
Hiccup exhaled softly.
Hiccup said, "He is choosing not to."
Lisa asked, "Why."
Hiccup's voice lowered slightly.
Hiccup said, "Because he knows he cannot."
That answer settled between them.
Not loud.
But certain.
Back near the center of the room, Zack began to walk toward Alvira.
Not rushed.
Not hesitant.
Just steady.
Intentional.
Alvira did not move to meet him.
She stayed where she was.
Waiting.
Zack stopped in front of her, close enough now that the rest of the room seemed to fade slightly into the background.
Zack said, "You stayed."
Alvira replied, "So did you."
Zack said, "I usually do."
Alvira said, "So do I."
A small pause followed.
Then—
Zack said, "Today felt different."
Alvira held his gaze.
Alvira said, "It did."
Zack studied her expression carefully.
Zack said, "You understand why."
Alvira did not pretend.
Alvira said, "Yes."
That answer alone carried more than words.
Zack said, "And."
Alvira let out a soft breath.
Alvira said, "And I am still trying to understand what to do with it."
Zack nodded slightly.
Zack said, "You do not have to decide everything immediately."
Alvira said, "That is what Ray said too."
The moment his name was mentioned—
Something shifted.
Not sharply.
Not visibly.
But enough.
Zack's gaze held hers a second longer.
Zack said, "He spoke to you."
Alvira said, "Yes."
Zack did not ask what was said.
He already knew.
Not the exact words—
But enough.
Zack said, "And you listened."
Alvira said, "Of course I did."
Zack nodded once.
Zack said, "That makes sense."
There was no tension in his tone.
No anger.
Just acknowledgment.
And that—
Somehow—
Made it more real.
Alvira watched him carefully.
Alvira said, "You are not asking what he said."
Zack said, "I do not need to."
Alvira asked, "Why."
Zack's voice lowered slightly.
Zack said, "Because I can see the effect of it."
That answer lingered.
Alvira said, "And what do you see."
Zack did not hesitate.
Zack said, "That you are thinking more than before."
Alvira let out a quiet breath.
Alvira said, "That is accurate."
Zack said, "And that you are not pulling away."
Alvira met his gaze fully.
Alvira said, "Should I."
Zack's answer came immediately.
Zack said, "No."
The word was firm.
Certain.
Unmoved.
Something in her chest tightened slightly.
Not uncomfortable.
Just… deeper.
Zack's expression softened just enough to be felt.
Zack said, "I meant what I said last night."
Alvira said quietly, "I know."
Zack said, "Nothing about that has changed."
Alvira replied, "I did not think it would."
A brief silence followed.
But this one—
Was different.
Not uncertain.
Not tense.
Just… close.
From the side, Ray watched.
Still.
Quiet.
Unmoving.
But this time—
There was no denial in his expression.
No attempt to convince himself it meant nothing.
He saw it clearly now.
The way Zack stood near her.
The way she did not step back.
The way their words seemed to settle into something steady instead of drifting away.
Lisa glanced at him.
Lisa said softly, "You are very quiet."
Ray did not look at her.
Ray said, "There is nothing to say."
Hiccup watched him carefully.
Hiccup said, "That is not true."
Ray exhaled slowly.
Ray said, "Then there is nothing I should say."
That was different.
Lisa noticed.
Hiccup noticed.
But neither pushed.
Back near the table, Alvira shifted slightly.
Alvira said, "Things are changing."
Zack said, "Yes."
Alvira asked, "Are you going to let them."
Zack held her gaze.
Zack said, "I already am."
Alvira's breath slowed.
Alvira said, "You sound very sure."
Zack said, "I am."
Alvira asked quietly, "About me."
Zack's answer did not waver.
Zack said, "Yes."
That word stayed with her.
Stronger than before.
Clearer.
And for the first time—
She did not question the feeling that followed it.
She simply felt it.
Zack noticed.
Of course he did.
Zack said, softer now, "You feel it too."
It was not a question.
Alvira did not deny it.
Alvira said, "I do."
The admission was quiet.
But it changed everything.
Zack did not move closer.
He did not need to.
The distance between them no longer felt like distance at all.
Across the room, Ray looked away first this time.
Not because he wanted to.
But because staying would have meant watching something he could no longer pretend did not matter.
Lisa exhaled softly.
Lisa said, "It is getting stronger."
Hiccup nodded.
Hiccup said, "Yes."
Lisa asked, "What happens now."
Hiccup's gaze moved toward Zack and Alvira.
Hiccup said, "Now it becomes real."
And at the center of it all—
Alvira stood there, no longer confused in the same way as before.
Not certain.
Not decided.
But no longer unaware.
And Zack—
For the first time—
Was no longer holding back.
