Chapter 85 - "When Silence Became a Choice"

Chapter 86

Morning came, but it did not bring clarity.

It only made everything feel more real.

Alvira stood by the tall window in her chambers, her fingers resting lightly against the cool glass as she watched the palace grounds slowly come to life. Servants moved with quiet efficiency below, guards shifted positions at their posts, and the world continued as if nothing had changed.

But for her—

Everything had.

Zack's voice from the night before lingered in her thoughts, steady and certain, the way he had spoken without hesitation, as though what he felt was something he had already accepted long before saying it out loud.

And then Ray.

His words had been different. Not certain in the same way. Not calm. But real. Honest in a way that carried weight, as if every word had cost him something to say.

She closed her eyes briefly.

Alvira said softly to herself, "This is not simple anymore."

It never had been.

But now—

She could not pretend otherwise.

A knock came at the door.

She turned.

Alvira said, "Come in."

Lisa stepped inside, her expression calm but observant, as it always was when she already knew more than she was saying.

Lisa said, "You did not come down early today."

Alvira replied, "I needed a moment."

Lisa walked further into the room, stopping just close enough to study her properly.

Lisa said, "Something happened."

It was not a question.

Alvira exhaled slowly.

Alvira said, "Two things happened."

Lisa's brows lifted slightly.

Lisa said, "That sounds serious."

Alvira let out a quiet breath that almost turned into a small, tired smile.

Alvira said, "It is."

Lisa did not rush her.

She simply waited.

Alvira looked at her, then away again.

Alvira said, "Zack spoke to me last night."

Lisa did not react immediately, but something in her eyes sharpened.

Lisa said, "And."

Alvira hesitated, then said it plainly.

Alvira said, "He told me how he feels."

A brief silence followed.

Lisa said, "I thought he might."

Alvira looked at her quickly.

Alvira said, "You knew."

Lisa shook her head slightly.

Lisa said, "Not exactly. But it was becoming obvious."

Alvira turned back toward the window.

Alvira said, "It did not feel obvious to me."

Lisa said, "That is because you are inside it."

Alvira let that settle.

Then she spoke again.

Alvira said, "Ray also told me."

This time, Lisa did react.

Just slightly.

Lisa said, "Ray."

Alvira nodded.

Alvira said, "After I left the gardens."

Lisa crossed her arms lightly, thinking.

Lisa said, "That… complicates things."

Alvira let out a quiet breath.

Alvira said, "That is exactly what I said."

Lisa looked at her carefully.

Lisa said, "And what do you feel."

That question lingered longer than the others.

Alvira did not answer immediately.

When she did, her voice was softer.

Alvira said, "I feel something when I am around Zack. It is constant. Like it does not give me a choice."

She paused.

Alvira said, "But with Ray… it is different. It is not as strong, but it is real. And I do not want to ignore that either."

Lisa stepped closer.

Lisa said, "You are going to have to choose eventually."

Alvira said, "I know."

Lisa said, "Just do not take too long."

Alvira frowned slightly.

Alvira said, "Why."

Lisa's voice softened.

Lisa said, "Because feelings like that do not stay still. They either grow… or they break something."

That stayed with her.

Even as they left the room together.

Even as they walked down the long corridor toward the council chamber.

Even as the doors opened—

And everything became real again.

The room was already filling.

Voices low, controlled, familiar.

But the moment Alvira stepped inside—

She felt it.

That shift.

Subtle.

But undeniable.

Her eyes moved instinctively.

Zack.

He was already seated, speaking quietly with one of the council members, but the moment she entered—

He stopped.

Not completely.

Not in a way that others would notice.

But enough.

His gaze lifted.

And found her.

Immediately.

This time—

There was no hesitation in it.

No attempt to hide it behind formality or distance.

Just recognition.

And something deeper.

Alvira felt her breath catch slightly.

But she did not look away.

Not immediately.

Across the room—

Ray noticed.

He had been leaning back in his seat, appearing relaxed, detached as always.

But his eyes had already moved to her the moment she walked in.

And when he saw where her attention went—

When he saw that brief moment between her and Zack—

Something in his posture shifted.

Not obvious.

Not enough for anyone to call it out.

But enough.

Enough for Zack to notice.

Their eyes met.

Just for a second.

Zack's gaze was steady.

Ray's was not.

Ray looked away first.

Zack did not.

The silence between them said more than words could have.

Hiccup leaned slightly toward Lisa.

Hiccup said quietly, "It is different today."

Lisa replied, "Yes."

Hiccup asked, "You spoke to her."

Lisa said, "I did."

Hiccup said, "And."

Lisa's gaze moved between Zack, Ray, and Alvira.

Lisa said softly, "It is exactly what it looks like."

Hiccup exhaled under his breath.

Hiccup said, "That is not good."

Lisa said, "No. It is not."

The meeting began, but for once—

It did not hold the same weight.

Words were spoken.

Decisions were discussed.

But attention—

Attention was elsewhere.

Zack spoke as he always did, calm, precise, controlled.

But there were moments—

Small moments—

Where his gaze shifted.

Toward her.

And this time—

He did not hide it as carefully.

Alvira felt it every time.

And instead of avoiding it—

She met it.

Not boldly.

Not openly.

But enough.

Enough for it to be seen.

Ray saw all of it.

Every glance.

Every pause.

Every moment that stretched just a second longer than it should have.

And for the first time—

He did not look away from it.

He let himself see it clearly.

And it hurt.

Not sharply.

Not loudly.

But deeply.

Like something steady was slowly tightening inside his chest.

Zack noticed that too.

Of course he did.

There was a moment—

Brief.

But clear—

When Zack spoke and Ray interrupted.

It was subtle.

A disagreement about strategy.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing out of place.

But the way they looked at each other—

That was new.

Zack said, "Hesitation will cost us time."

Ray replied, "And acting too quickly will cost us accuracy."

Zack said, "We can correct errors."

Ray said, "Not all of them."

The room quieted slightly.

Not because of the words—

But because of the tone.

Hiccup shifted slightly in his seat.

Lisa's fingers tightened against the edge of the table.

Alvira watched.

And this time—

She understood.

Not everything.

But enough.

The meeting moved on.

But something had already changed.

Something that could not be undone.

By the time it ended, the room emptied more slowly than usual.

People lingered.

Watched.

Not openly.

But enough.

Alvira remained seated for a moment longer.

Thinking.

Feeling.

Choosing nothing.

And everything at once.

Zack stood.

Ray stood.

Neither moved toward her.

Not yet.

Because now—

Silence itself had become a choice.

And whatever came next—

Would no longer be accidental.
