Chapter 81 - "When Staying Started to Mean Something"

Chapter 82

The palace felt different the second day Alvira returned.

Not because anything had changed.

But because she noticed more.

The guards at the entrance nodded with familiarity instead of curiosity. The attendants no longer whispered as she passed. Even the long corridors, once intimidating, now felt like paths she was beginning to understand.

She walked beside her father again, but this time her steps were more certain.

Alvira said, "They are already getting used to me."

Her father replied, "That happens faster than you think in places like this."

Alvira said, "Is that good."

Her father glanced at her briefly.

Her father said, "It depends on why they are noticing you."

She did not respond.

Because she already knew the answer.

It was not just her.

It was him.

When they entered the council chamber, the room was not yet full.

Ray was already there, leaning back in his seat like he had nowhere else to be. Hiccup stood beside him, speaking quietly with Lisa.

Their conversation slowed the moment they saw her.

Lisa said, "You came back."

Alvira replied, "I said I would."

Hiccup said, "Most people say that and do not mean it."

Alvira said, "I am not most people."

Ray let out a quiet breath that almost sounded like a laugh.

Ray said, "We noticed."

Alvira stepped closer, her gaze moving between them.

Alvira said, "You talk like I have already joined something."

Lisa said, "You keep showing up."

Hiccup added, "That is usually how it starts."

Alvira said, "And how does it end."

Ray answered this time.

Ray said, "It does not. Not here."

There was something in his tone that made her pause.

Not cold.

Just… aware.

Alvira said, "You sound like you are warning me."

Ray replied, "I am deciding if I should."

Before she could respond, the doors opened again.

Zack.

He walked in with the same calm presence, but today there was something lighter in his expression. Not obvious. Not enough for anyone to point out.

But enough to be felt.

His eyes moved across the room once.

Then stopped.

On her.

Only for a second.

Then he continued walking.

Alvira looked away first this time.

Lisa leaned slightly toward her.

Lisa said quietly, "You are getting faster at that."

Alvira asked, "At what."

Lisa said, "Pretending you did not notice."

Alvira allowed a small smile.

Alvira said, "Maybe I am learning."

Hiccup said, "That might be dangerous."

Alvira asked, "Why does everyone keep saying that."

Ray answered without looking at her.

Ray said, "Because this place does not change. People do."

The meeting began shortly after.

But today—

It did not feel like she was watching from the outside.

She listened. Followed. Understood.

And every now and then—

She felt it again.

That quiet awareness.

Like someone was noticing when she did.

After the meeting, she did not wait for her father.

She stood.

And walked forward.

Straight toward Zack.

The movement did not go unnoticed.

Hiccup said under his breath, "She is doing it again."

Lisa said, "She is not hesitating anymore."

Ray did not speak.

He just watched.

Alvira stopped a few steps away from Zack.

Alvira said, "You said there are discussions after the meeting."

Zack looked at her.

Zack said, "There are."

Alvira said, "Then I stayed."

Zack said, "I can see that."

There was a brief pause.

Then—

Zack said, "You understood more today."

Alvira replied, "I listened differently."

Zack asked, "What changed."

Alvira said, "I stopped trying to prove that I could understand."

Zack said, "And instead."

Alvira said, "I just did."

Something in his expression shifted slightly.

Zack said, "That is better."

Alvira said, "I thought you would say that."

Zack asked, "You think you understand me already."

Alvira replied, "Not completely."

Zack said, "Then why assume."

Alvira said, "Because you are predictable in certain ways."

Zack raised a brow slightly.

Zack said, "That sounds like an observation."

Alvira said, "It is."

Zack said, "And what else have you observed."

Alvira held his gaze.

Alvira said, "That you pay attention even when you act like you are not."

That answer stayed in the air.

Unmoved.

Zack did not deny it.

Instead—

Zack said, "And what do you think that means."

Alvira said, "I have not decided yet."

A small silence followed.

Then—

Zack said, "Fair."

From the side, Lisa leaned into Hiccup slightly.

Lisa said, "They are having a full conversation now."

Hiccup replied, "Yes."

Lisa said, "Without stopping."

Hiccup said, "Yes."

Ray finally spoke.

Ray said, "And neither of them is trying to leave."

Back near the chamber doors, Alvira shifted slightly.

Alvira said, "Your friends keep watching."

Zack said, "They always do."

Alvira asked, "Should that bother me."

Zack said, "Does it."

Alvira replied, "No."

Zack said, "Then it is not a problem."

Alvira nodded once.

Then—

Alvira said, "Can I ask something."

Zack said, "You just did."

Alvira gave him a look.

Alvira said, "A real question."

Zack said, "Go ahead."

She hesitated this time.

Just slightly.

Then she asked.

Alvira said, "Why did you let me stay yesterday."

Zack looked at her for a moment before answering.

Zack said, "Because you were not pretending."

Alvira said, "That is all."

Zack said, "That is enough."

Alvira searched his expression.

Alvira said, "Most people need more than that."

Zack said, "I am not most people."

Alvira said, "I noticed."

Another pause.

Softer this time.

Then—

Zack said, "You should not get used to this."

Alvira asked, "To what."

Zack said, "Being this close to how things work here."

Alvira said, "You think I will leave."

Zack said, "Most do."

Alvira shook her head slightly.

Alvira said, "I am not most people."

Zack held her gaze for a second longer than usual.

Then—

Zack said, "You keep saying that."

Alvira said, "Because it keeps being true."

Something about that made him almost smile.

Almost.

And that alone—

Did not go unnoticed.

Ray let out a slow breath.

Ray said, "That is new."

Lisa asked, "What is."

Ray said, "He almost smiled."

Hiccup said, "You are imagining things again."

Ray shook his head.

Ray said quietly, "No."

His eyes stayed fixed on Zack.

Ray said, "He is changing."

Lisa looked back at them.

Lisa said, "So is she."

Ray nodded once.

Ray said, "That is the problem."

Back in the chamber, Zack stepped aside slightly.

Zack said, "If you are staying, then stay properly."

Alvira asked, "What does that mean."

Zack said, "It means you do not stand at the edges anymore."

Alvira looked at him.

Then at the room.

Then back at him.

Alvira said, "You are inviting me in."

Zack said, "I am allowing it."

Alvira said, "That sounds like control."

Zack said, "It is."

Alvira held his gaze.

Then she stepped forward.

Past him.

Into the space she had only watched before.

Alvira said, "Then I accept."

Zack watched her for a moment.

And this time—

He did not look away first.
