Chapter 81
After that meeting, nothing officially changed in the palace, but everything felt slightly different to those who were paying attention.
Zack returned to his duties as usual, attending council discussions, reviewing reports, and making decisions without hesitation. On the surface, nothing about him had shifted. But Ray noticed the small things that others missed. The pauses before he responded. The way his gaze sometimes drifted toward places Alvira had stood earlier. The brief moments where his focus seemed elsewhere even while he was listening.
Ray did not mention it at first.
He simply watched.
Alvira, on her side, began to notice something else. Every time she entered the palace now, she found herself unconsciously looking for him. She would tell herself it was only because he was often in important meetings, but even she did not fully believe that anymore.
One afternoon, she arrived earlier than usual with her father. The council chamber was still empty except for a few guards and servants preparing the room.
Her father said, "You seem distracted today."
Alvira replied softly, "I am not distracted."
Her father gave her a knowing look. "You are thinking too much then."
Alvira paused, then said, "Is there a difference."
Her father smiled faintly. "Only when you try to deny it."
Before she could respond, footsteps echoed in the corridor.
Zack entered.
He stopped briefly when he saw her already there.
Alvira stood slightly straighter without realizing it.
Zack noticed.
He always noticed.
"You are early," he said.
Alvira replied, "So are you."
Zack nodded once. "I had matters to settle."
Her father greeted him formally, and Zack responded with respect, but his attention kept returning to Alvira in small, controlled glances.
Ray arrived a few moments later with Hiccup and Lisa.
Hiccup immediately whispered, "Why does it feel like we walked into something we should not see."
Lisa replied, "Because you did."
Ray said nothing at first.
Then quietly, "It is becoming noticeable."
Hiccup asked, "What is."
Ray answered, "Everything."
During the meeting, Zack spoke less than usual, but when he did, the room still followed him completely.
At one point, a disagreement broke out between two council members.
One of them said, "We cannot rely on incomplete intelligence."
Zack responded calmly, "Then wait until it is complete and lose ground."
The man frowned. "That is not a solution."
Zack replied, "It is reality."
Alvira watched him carefully during this exchange.
When the meeting ended, she remained seated for a moment longer while others began to leave.
Zack noticed and stayed back as well.
The room slowly emptied until only a few remained.
Zack walked closer slightly and said, "You did not leave with the others."
Alvira replied, "I was thinking."
Zack asked, "About what."
Alvira hesitated briefly before saying, "About how you speak."
Zack raised a brow slightly. "That is unusual."
Alvira continued, "You do not waste words. It feels like everything you say already has weight before you say it."
Zack studied her for a moment. "And you prefer words that are not wasted."
Alvira nodded. "Yes."
Zack replied quietly, "That is rare here."
Alvira looked at him. "You keep saying that."
Zack said, "Because it is true."
A pause settled between them.
Then Alvira asked, "Do you ever say things you do not mean."
Zack answered without hesitation, "No."
That made her pause slightly.
Then she said, "That must make conversations difficult."
Zack replied, "It removes unnecessary ones."
Alvira smiled faintly. "And the necessary ones."
Zack looked at her and said, "Are few."
From a distance, Ray watched the entire exchange.
Hiccup leaned toward him. "You look tense."
Ray replied, "I am fine."
Lisa said, "You are not fine."
Ray ignored her and continued watching.
Because what he saw was not just conversation anymore.
It was something forming without permission.
Something neither Zack nor Alvira seemed ready to admit.
And that was what made it dangerous.
Not because it was loud.
But because it was quiet.
Too quiet to stop early.
