Chapter 5 - Chapter 4: The Audit of the Phoenix

## **Chapter 4: The Audit of the Phoenix**

Hogwarts was a castle built on ancient secrets, but Julian Vane was rapidly becoming the most public mystery within its walls. By the second week of term, the "Ravenclaw Grant" had been finalized. Twenty pristine copies of *Advanced Arithmancy Studies* sat in the house library, each embossed with a small, golden "V" on the spine. To the students, it was a miracle; to Julian, it was a beachhead.

But Julian wasn't just giving away books. His **Appraisal Eye** was constantly scanning the Great Hall during breakfast, tracking the flow of "social capital." He had already issued seventeen "Personal Expense Loans" to fifth and sixth-years whose parents—struggling Ministry workers or ruined merchants—hadn't sent them enough pocket money for Hogsmeade.

The System was humming with activity, a constant digital tide beneath the stone floors.

Julian felt a prickle at the back of his neck. He didn't look up from his porridge. Instead, he accessed the System's **Passive Defense** menu.

*"Silas,"* Julian projected his thoughts through the mental link. *"Dumbledore is watching. Has Marcus Thorne been discreet at the Ministry?"*

Silas's voice echoed back, cool and professional, across the miles from Diagon Alley. *"Thorne is a shadow, Master. But the Ministry's sudden influx of liquidity is being discussed in the Wizengamot. They don't know the source is a ten-year-old, but Dumbledore has many ears. He knows someone is buying the debt of the wizarding world."*

### **The Headmaster's Office**

The summons came on a Tuesday evening. A small slip of parchment delivered by a silver-haired owl.

Julian climbed the moving spiral staircase and entered the circular office. The walls were covered in snoring portraits and whirring silver instruments. In the center sat Albus Dumbledore, his half-moon spectacles glinting in the candlelight.

"Ah, Julian. Do come in. Lemon drop?" Dumbledore gestured to a bowl on his desk.

"No, thank you, Headmaster. I prefer to keep my blood sugar stable," Julian replied, sitting in the high-backed chair. He kept his wand—the **Creditor's Reach**—resting casually in his lap. He could feel the wand's passive aura dampening Dumbledore's subtle Legilimency.

"I have been hearing remarkable things, Julian," Dumbledore began, his voice airy and pleasant. "The Ravenclaw library has never been so well-funded. And I hear several of our older students have found... a new source of financial stability."

"The Vane family has always valued education, Headmaster. We are simply ensuring that the post-war recession doesn't stifle the potential of this generation."

Dumbledore leaned forward, his blue eyes losing some of their twinkle. "Generosity is a rare virtue in these dark times. Yet, gold often comes with strings attached. Gringotts tells me that a 'Vane Financial' has become their largest institutional creditor. A bold move for a house that was nearly extinct only a year ago."

Julian smiled thinly. "The war took much from us. It also taught us the value of being the one who holds the ledger. If the Ministry cannot afford to rebuild, and Gringotts is too afraid to lend, the Vane family will step into the gap."

"And what is the price of this gap-filling, Julian? I see students signing contracts. I see Goblins acting as your bailiffs. You are ten years old, yet you move like a man who wants to own the very air we breathe."

"I don't want to own the air, Headmaster," Julian said, standing up. "I simply want to ensure that when people breathe it, they remember who provided the oxygen. If you'll excuse me, I have a Transfiguration essay to complete."

### **The Tech World Unlock**

As Julian walked back to the Ravenclaw tower, his heart was hammering, but his mind was clear. Dumbledore was suspicious, but he was also a man of laws. As long as the contracts were legal, the Headmaster couldn't stop him.

He ducked into an empty classroom and opened the System Shop.

Julian ignored the magical trinkets. He needed something Dumbledore couldn't track with a spell. He selected the **Neural-Link Financial Processor** for 8,000 points.

Suddenly, his vision expanded. He didn't just see the world; he saw it as a stream of live data. He could see the "Price of Gold" in London, the "Trade Volume" of owl-orders, and the "Social Debt" of every person in the castle.

Julian's grin widened. Dumbledore thought he was watching a dangerous child. He didn't realize that Julian was currently calculating how much it would cost to buy the **Hogwarts Mortgage** out from under the Ministry's feet.

"Tippy," Julian whispered.

The elf appeared with a soft *crack*. "Yes, Master Julian?"

"Tell Silas to prepare an offer for the Hogwarts Board of Governors. We are going to offer them a 'Grant' they can't refuse. If Dumbledore wants to watch me, I'll give him a front-row seat to his own acquisition."

**"The interest is coming, Headmaster,"** Julian muttered to the empty room. **"And I never waive the late fees."**
