They sensed it before they saw it. That quiet change in the air. The kind that turns gut feeling into warning.
Kael stopped walking. "We're being watched " he said.
Tomas didn't argue. "I felt it earlier." he admitted. "It's closer now."
Elira's grip got a bit tighter. "Valtheris?"
"No one moves like this." Kael replied.
Lina's voice came softly from behind them.
"We're too late."
That was all they needed to know. It happened fast. Too fast for the town to react.
Boots. Armor. Steel stepping into silence.
A group of soldiers came out of the paths of Durnholde. They blocked all directions with skill. They moved like one person. Disciplined and in control.
Valtheris.
Kael moved forward standing between them and Elira.
"Get in behind me " he whispered and raised his sword. Tomas started to use his magic. Lina disappeared.
Then, a man walked through the soldiers. He walked slowly. The others gave him space. His armor was darker than theirs with marks that showed he was important. A long cloak was on one shoulder, worn on purpose.
He had a presence.
He was, in charge.
"So, it was true " He spoke calmly. Too calmly.
He looked at Elira. His eyes were sharp. He knew something.
"Princess Elira of Kaelmyra " he said.
He was certain.
Kael gripped something
"Are you even sure what you are accusing her for?" he asked.
The man kept looking at Elira.
"You can hide who you are but that in your hand, you cannot…" he said.
He looked down at her hand. The ring. The royal symbol of Kaelmyra.
Elira got angry. She was careless. "Who are you?" Elira asked.
The man gave a smile. He looked a bit amused.
"Captain Varik " he said. "I am from the 3rd Vanguard Unit of Valtheris."
There was a pause. "And I am here to bring you to Valtheris " he added.
"To Valtheris?" Kael repeated, his voice cold.
Varik's expression didn't change. "Alive if possible " he said.
That was all the answer they needed. The soldiers moved together forming a tighter group.
They weren't rushing. They weren't panicking. They already knew what would happen.
"You crossed into Kaelmyran territory " Elira said. "That is an act of war."
Varik tilted his head slightly. "Then maybe your kingdom should have been more careful about what it sends across its borders " he said.
He paused.
"Or who it sends " he added.
Tomas spoke in a voice.
"We are still at the border of the two kingdoms... " he said. "We are not under your jurisdiction." Kael exhaled slowly.
"Not yet " he said. Varik raised a hand.
The soldiers behind him got ready away. They didn't waste any time. They didn't hesitate.
"Lay down your weapons " he said. "And come quietly " he added.
Elira looked at him. "No " she said.
The answer was immediate. It was what they expected. Varik nodded once.
"As you wish " he said. He dropped his hand. Then things happened fast.
Steel flashed in the air.
Kael stepped forward. Blocked the first attack. Tomas used magic to create some space between them and the soldiers. Lina attacked from a hidden spot. Disrupted the formation.
It wasn't enough. The soldiers adjusted away.
"They're trained for this " Kael said.
"Of course they are " Tomas replied. "They're from Valtheris " he added.
More soldiers closed in. They surrounded them. They blocked all the exits.
This wasn't a patrol. It was a capture operation. They had planned for resistance.
Varik just watched. He measured the situation. He was patient. "Enough " he said calmly.
The soldiers pushed harder. They got closer.
Kael gritted his teeth. "We're getting surrounded " he said.
Elira thought fast. There was no escape. There was no opening.
Varik just kept watching. He was waiting for them to make a mistake.
Then a loud sound echoed through the fight. It was sharp. It was familiar.
Clang.
It didn't come from the battle. It came from something Something heavier.
The soldiers hesitated for a second. Varik's eyes moved. He looked toward the sound.
At the edge of the street a figure stood.
It was the blacksmith. He wasn't wearing an apron. He didn't have any tools. There was something different about him. The air, around him seemed to slow down.
"This isn't the place " he said. His voice was calm. It had a deeper meaning.
Something that didn't belong in a village.
Varik studied him. He didn't dismiss him. He didn't react. He observed him. "…You're the one they mentioned " he said.
A small smile formed on his face. "Interesting " he said.
The blacksmith didn't respond. He looked at Elira for a moment. Then he looked back.
"Leave " he said.
It was a command. It was simple. It was direct.
Varik's smile got a bit wider. "I don't take orders from low lives like you " he replied.
There was a pause. "But I am curious " he said.
His eyes got sharper. "Who exactly are you?" he asked.
There was silence.
The blacksmith stepped forward. Once. In that one step something changed. Not just the air.
Varik's expression. It was subtle. It was real. Recognition? No. Instinct.
"I see " Varik said.
He sensed something. That was enough. He raised his hand again. Not to attack.
To signal. "Change of priority " he said.
The soldiers adjusted away.
They weren't just surrounding the princess. They were surrounding the blacksmith too.
Because whatever stood before them. Was no longer a bystander.
Elira felt it. The shift. The moment when everything changed. Deep inside. A realization began to form. It was too dangerous to name. It was too important to ignore.
Varik's voice cut through the silence again. "It seems… " he said slowly. "We've found something more valuable than we expected " he added.
The street of Durnholde. Once quiet. Once forgotten. Became the center of something
The blacksmith stood still. He was calm. He was unmoving. For the first time. He didn't turn away.
This was no longer a capture. It was the beginning of something bigger.
