Chapter 9 - Fragments that Fade

The silence after a battle is never really quiet. It is always there lurking in the background.

Ronan stood where the light had faded, where the Holy Sword had been.

His hand was still raised, as if he expected something to be there.

It was not. There was emptiness.

Elira's voice came again this time closer. She was being careful like she was approaching something that might break.

He turned slowly. His eyes met hers.

For a moment there was nothing in his eyes.

No recognition, no memory, instinct.

Elira felt it that hesitation, that absence.

She said softly "We met."

Ronan studied her face searching for something, anything.

A connection, a memory, anything.

There was nothing.

Elira added, "In the town, the forge."

That memory lingered, faint, like an echo.

Ronan's gaze shifted slightly. He said, "Durnholde."

It was not said with certainty. Like something he remembered just enough to hold on to.

Elira. The tension eased slightly.

Not enough because Kael stepped forward his eyes sharp. He asked, "What did it cost?"

Ronan did not answer immediately.

His hand lowered slowly. He said, "It's nothing new."

His voice lacked weight like he was not telling the whole truth.

Tomas watched him closely. Said, "It's the curse, isn't it?"

There was no accusation in his voice, understanding.

Ronan did not deny it.

Tomas continued carefully "When using the holy crest symbol, you are lose something."

There was silence. Then Ronan said, "It's like this fragments of memories."

The word came slowly measured like he was choosing his words carefully.

Elira's breath caught slightly. She asked, "What did you lose?"

Ronan did not answer away because he did not know.

That was worse.

He said quietly "I don't remember."

The words landed heavily like a blade.

Lina exhaled softly from the side. Said, "That's cruel."

Ronan did not react, because it was not new to him.

A faint wind passed through the land, cool and restless.

Kael said, breaking the silence "They'll come back with more."

Ronan replied, simple and certain "Yes."

Tomas looked toward the treeline and said, "Then we shouldn't stay here."

Elira hesitated, looked at Ronan and said, "Come with us."

The words hung in the air. Kael glanced at her but did not interrupt.

Ronan did not answer instead he looked past them toward Durnholde, the town, the forge the quiet life he had built.

A life that was already breaking.

He said, "Even if I leave, they won't stop."

Elira stepped closer. Asked, "And if you stay?"

A pause and then Ronan said, "They still won't stop either."

There was silence. That was the truth.

Lina smirked faintly. Said, "Sounds like you're already out of options."

Kael crossed his arms. Said, "Then let's just stop pretending you have one."

Ronan exhaled slowly not in frustration not in anger, acceptance. He asked, "Where are we going?"

Elira did not hesitate, "Back to Kaelmyra."

The name. Something about it felt heavier than it should.

Ronan asked, "Why?"

Elira met his gaze. Said, "Because my father sent me to find you."

A beat. Then she said, "I didn't even know that I will, but now I have."

Ronan looked at her this time not searching for memory but for intent truth.

He said, "You don't even know who I have become."

Elira shook her head "No " she admitted, "But I know what you did. I know what Valtheris is afraid of."

There was silence. That reached him not as memory but as something deeper a reason.

Ronan turned away slightly looking toward the horizon the path ahead danger, war, loss everything he had left behind.

He said, "If I go with you, things will get worse."

Elira did not look away "They already are."

Another silence and then Ronan nodded, once.

He said, "Then we move before dawn."

Kael let out a breath "Ugh, finally."

Lina smiled faintly "It's about time."

Tomas adjusted his stance already thinking ahead.

Elira watched Ronan not as a legend not as a weapon. As a man who had lost something and kept walking anyway.

The wind picked up slightly carrying with it something unseen far, beyond the horizon in the lands of Valtheris.

Messengers were already moving, reports already being delivered "The Hero is alive."

In the capital someone who should have never heard those words again would soon hear them and everything would begin to change.
