Chapter 8 - The 100th floor

The entrance to the dungeon stood like the jaws of a silent beast. Massive stone doors loomed before the students of Astria Academy, ancient runes carved deep into their surface, faintly glowing as if reacting to their presence. The air was thick—heavy with anticipation, excitement… and something darker that none of them could quite name.

Nick stood at the front of his team, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword. Behind him were Kael, calm and observant; Lloyd, gripping his axe with a grin that bordered on reckless excitement; Rem, quietly checking her arrows; and Yuki, her silver hair shimmering faintly even in the dim light, her expression unreadable but focused.

"Ready?" Nick asked, glancing back.

Lloyd smirked. "I was born ready."

Kael exhaled slowly. "Stay sharp. This isn't a tournament arena." Rem nodded softly. "I'll cover from behind." Yuki didn't say anything—but her presence alone was answer enough. With a deep rumble, the dungeon doors creaked open. And they stepped inside. At first… it was almost disappointing.

The first floor was simple—too simple.

Low-level beasts roamed aimlessly, their movements sluggish and uncoordinated.

Teams spread out quickly, forming formations and attacking with confidence. Swords clashed, spells echoed, and arrows flew—but nothing felt dangerous.

Nick's team moved like a well-oiled machine.

"Left," Kael called calmly.

Nick reacted instantly, his blade slicing clean through a lunging creature. "Behind," Rem whispered. Before the monster could even reach, an arrow pierced straight through its eye. Lloyd laughed as he crushed another with a brutal swing of his axe. "This is it? This is the dungeon they were hyping up?"

Yuki stepped forward, her sword flashing—three swift movements, three monsters down.

"Don't get careless," she said softly.

Kael nodded. "She's right. This is just the beginning." And he was right. As they descended deeper, the dungeon began to change. The air grew heavier. The light dimmer. By the 20th floor, the monsters were faster. By the 40th floor, they were stronger. By the 60th floor… they were hunting back.

Teams that had entered with confidence now moved cautiously. Some had already started falling behind, their energy draining, their coordination slipping. Panting, sweating, struggling. "This… isn't easy," one student muttered, collapsing to a knee.

"Fall back! Regroup!" another shouted. But the dungeon didn't care.

It only grew harder. And yet… one team stood apart. Nick's team.

While others struggled, they advanced.

While others hesitated, they dominated.

Rem stood at a distance, her bow drawn with perfect precision. Every arrow she released found its mark—eyes, throats, weak points. She wasn't just attacking—she was controlling the battlefield. Kael moved at the center, his eyes constantly scanning, calculating. He blocked incoming attacks, redirected enemies, and guided the team with flawless strategy.

"Nick, two coming from your right—low stance."

"Lloyd, don't overextend. Yuki's covering your blind spot."

"Rem, high ground—now."

His voice was calm, precise… unshakable.

Nick and Yuki fought side by side like twin blades of destruction. Nick's strikes were sharp and decisive—each swing efficient, each movement controlled. Yuki, on the other hand, was fluid and elegant, her sword dancing through enemies as if they were nothing more than falling leaves. Together, they were unstoppable. And then there was Lloyd. Brutal. Relentless. Unstoppable.

His axe tore through monsters with raw force, his laughter echoing through the dungeon as he carved a path forward.

"COME ON!" he roared. "IS THAT ALL YOU'VE GOT?!" Monsters didn't stand a chance. By the time they reached the 80th floor… the difference was undeniable.

Other teams had slowed to a crawl, their numbers dwindling, their morale shaken.

But Nick's team? They looked like they had just begun. Students began to notice.

"Who… are they?"

"That team… they haven't stopped once."

"Look at them… it's like they're not even tired." Eyes followed them. Whispers spread. Admiration grew.

Each member of that team—Nick, Kael, Lloyd, Rem, and Yuki—was seen as a powerhouse. Not just strong individually… but unstoppable together. And slowly, something began to change. Where there was fear… there was now inspiration.

Where there was doubt… there was now determination.

"Get up!" one student shouted to his teammate. "If they can keep going, so can we!"

"Don't fall behind!" another yelled.

They weren't just clearing the dungeon.

They were lifting everyone with them.

Floor 90. The air felt suffocating.

The monsters here were different—larger, faster, more aggressive.

Even Nick's team had started to feel the strain.

Sweat dripped down Nick's face as he parried a heavy strike.

"Still good?" Yuki asked, her voice calm despite the chaos.

Nick smirked. "Not done yet."

Lloyd slammed his axe into the ground, crushing a beast beneath it. "This is what I'm talking about!"

Rem's arrows came faster now, her breathing heavier but steady.

Kael's voice remained sharp. "Stay focused! One mistake and it's over!"

And so, step by step… fight by fight… they climbed.

Floor 99. Silence. An unnatural, suffocating silence. At the center of the vast chamber stood a towering monster—its body twisted, its presence overwhelming.

"This is it…" someone whispered.

Nick stepped forward. "I'll handle this."

Kael didn't argue. Yuki didn't interfere. They trusted him. The battle was fierce.

The monster roared, shaking the entire floor. Its attacks were devastating, its speed terrifying.

But Nick… adapted. Dodged. Countered. Endured. With one final, precise strike—

He cut it down. The monster collapsed.

And the 99th floor… was cleared. Cheers erupted. Students collapsed in relief, some laughing, some crying. "We… we did it…"

"We reached the end…" Even the teachers watching from above nodded in approval.

"Enough," one of them announced. "No one is to proceed further. The 100th floor is the boss chamber. We end the test here."

Relief washed over everyone.

It was over. Or so they thought.

As the students began to turn back—

BOOM. The doors behind them slammed shut. The sound echoed like a death sentence. Everyone froze. "What… was that?" Panic spread instantly. Students rushed to the doors, pushing, pulling, striking them with all their strength.

"They won't open!"

"Move! Let me try!" Magic. Weapons. Pure force. Nothing worked. Fear began to take hold. Then—A deep rumble shook the ground. "What now…?" someone whispered, their voice trembling. From the far end of the chamber… a massive gate began to open. Slowly. Heavily. Menacingly.

"The 100th floor…" Kael muttered. And then—Water. At first, just a trickle. Then a flow.

Then a flood. "WATER?!" "It's coming from the 99th floor walls!" The entire chamber began filling rapidly. Panic erupted. "We're going to drown!" "Open the door! OPEN IT!"

But the doors remained sealed. Unmoving.

Unbreakable. Nick clenched his fists, his mind racing. No escape. No way back.

Only one path forward. He turned to his team.

"We go to the 100th floor."

Lloyd grinned, despite the situation. "Now that sounds like a plan." Rem hesitated for a moment… then nodded. Yuki stepped forward without a word. Kael looked around at the chaos… then back at Nick. "…It's the only option." Nick turned to the others.

"If we stay here, we die!" he shouted. "The only way out is forward! To the 100th floor!"

Some hesitated. Some were terrified.

But the rising water gave them no choice.

One by one… they began to move. Running.

Climbing. Desperate. As the flood chased them from behind. And together—

They crossed into the 100th floor. Into the unknown. Into the boss chamber.

Where something far worse awaited them.
