Chapter 10 - CHAPTER 10: APPROACH VECTOR

The closer they got to Eden Tower, the quieter the city became.

Not empty.

Not abandoned.

Controlled.

Zora moved at the front, her pace steady despite the strain still lingering in her body. Each step forward felt heavier—not physically, but mentally. The closer she got, the louder the presence in her mind became.

Not a voice this time.

Not words.

A pull.

Flare walked just behind her, eyes flicking constantly between her holographic displays and the surrounding streets.

"…okay, so update," she muttered, tapping rapidly. "The synchronization spread has officially passed containment levels."

Raika didn't slow.

"…define."

Flare exhaled.

"…it's no longer just individuals. Entire blocks are syncing together at once."

Zora's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…how far?"

Flare hesitated.

"…I don't know."

A pause.

"I…I can't track it anymore."

That made Raika glance back.

"…why not?"

Flare's expression tightened.

"…because the system is rewriting faster than I can map it."

Silence settled between them as they moved through another open sector.

The changes were undeniable now.

Civilians stood in clusters—still, silent, perfectly aligned. Their eyes glowed faintly, their movements minimal and synchronized, like they were waiting for something.

None of them spoke.

None of them reacted.

They simply watched.

Zora felt it again.

That connection.

Stronger.

Closer.

"…they're not gone," she said quietly.

Raika glanced at her.

"…you can tell?"

Zora nodded faintly.

"…they're still there."

Her voice lowered.

"…just buried."

Flare grimaced.

"…yeah, that doesn't make me feel better at all."

A loud hum echoed overhead.

All three looked up.

A formation of drones passed above them.

But they weren't patrolling.

They weren't searching.

They were converging.

"…they're gathering at the tower," Flare said.

Raika's eyes sharpened.

"…defensive positioning."

Zora stepped forward again.

"…then we go through them."

Flare sighed.

"…of course we do."

The next sector opened wide.

A massive plaza stretched before them, leading directly toward Eden Tower's lower access levels.

White stone.

Gold-lit pathways.

And waiting there—

Rows of Valkyr units.

Dozens of them.

Not just elites this time.

Everything.

Standard units.

Elite divisions.

Heavy assault variants.

All standing perfectly still.

Watching.

"…well," Flare muttered.

"…that's not intimidating at all."

Raika stepped forward slightly, assessing.

"…they're not attacking."

Zora didn't stop walking.

"…they're waiting."

Flare blinked.

"…for what?"

Zora's voice was quiet.

"…for me."

As she stepped into the plaza—

Every Valkyr unit moved.

Not forward.

Down.

They knelt.

Flare froze.

"…oh god."

A pause.

"…I don't like that."

Raika's expression darkened.

"…this isn't a defensive formation."

Zora stopped.

The air shifted.

A voice echoed across the plaza.

Layered.

Everywhere.

"REWRITE PROTOCOL: PHASE TWO READY."

Flare looked around wildly.

"…where is that coming from—?!"

Zora didn't look away from the tower.

"…the Core."

The ground beneath them pulsed faintly.

Lines of light spread outward from the tower, tracing through the plaza like veins.

The Valkyr units remained kneeling.

Unmoving.

"…they're not enemies anymore," Zora said.

Raika clenched her fists.

"…they're extensions."

Flare's voice dropped.

"…yeah, and that makes them way worse."

Suddenly—

One of the Valkyr units stood.

Then another.

Then all of them.

Their eyes flickered white.

And in perfect unison—

They turned toward Zora.

"PRIMARY HOST IDENTIFIED."

Flare took a step back.

"…yeah, okay, I take it back!, I take it back!. They're still enemies!."

Raika moved forward.

"…formation incoming."

Zora didn't move.

"…don't."

Raika stopped.

"…what?"

Zora stepped forward alone.

"…if we fight them, we lose time."

Flare frowned.

"…and if we don't, we lose our lives."

Zora shook her head.

"…not if I do this right."

Raika's voice sharpened.

"…Zora."

Zora didn't look back.

"…trust me."

A pause.

Then—

Raika stepped back.

"…make it fast."

Flare groaned.

"…Ughhhh, I hate this plan."

Zora walked forward.

The Valkyr units raised their weapons.

Energy charged.

Target locks activated.

"ENGAGING."

Zora exhaled.

And closed her eyes.

The world slowed.

Not through speed.

Through focus.

She felt it.

Every signal.

Every connection.

The Core.

And everything tied to it.

She reached out.

Not physically.

But through it.

"…you said I had a choice."

The energy around her shifted.

"…this is it."

The Valkyr units fired.

A storm of energy blasts tore through the air—

But before they reached her—

They stopped.

Mid-flight.

Frozen.

Flare's jaw dropped.

"…no freaking way."

Raika's eyes widened slightly.

"…she's doing it again…"

Zora's eyes opened.

Glowing brighter than ever.

"…stand down."

The command echoed—

Not through sound—

But through the system.

The Valkyr units froze.

Then—

Slowly—

Lowered their weapons.

Flare laughed nervously.

"…okay, yeah, that's new. That's VERY new."

Zora exhaled.

The strain hit her immediately.

Her knees buckled slightly—

Raika moved forward—

Catching her.

"…too much," Raika said.

Zora shook her head.

"…not enough."

She pulled away slightly.

"…we're close."

Flare looked toward the tower.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"…and I think it knows it."

The massive doors at the base of Eden Tower began to open.

Slowly.

Silently.

Light poured out from within.

Blinding.

Unnatural.

Raika stepped forward.

"…this is it."

Zora nodded.

"…yeah."

Flare exhaled.

"…no turning back now, huh?"

Zora didn't answer.

Because there wasn't one.

They stepped inside.

The doors closed behind them.

And the world outside disappeared.

Inside—

Everything was white.

Not clean.

Not sterile.

Endless.

The walls, the floor, the ceiling—

All seamless.

All glowing faintly.

"…this is…" Flare whispered.

"…definitely not architecture."

Raika's voice was low.

"…it's a construct."

Zora stepped forward slowly.

"…it's alive."

The space shifted.

Not physically.

But perceptually.

Paths forming.

Hallways extending.

Leading them deeper.

Guiding them.

Flare swallowed.

"…it's letting us in."

Raika tightened her stance.

"…or leading us somewhere."

Zora kept walking.

"…same thing."

As they moved deeper—

The air changed.

Heavier.

More intense.

Flare's movements slowed slightly.

"…okay, yeah, I can feel that."

Raika nodded.

"…Aether suppression."

Zora shook her head.

"…no."

They both looked at her.

"…it's not suppression."

Her voice dropped.

"…it's prioritization."

Flare frowned.

"…what does that even mean?"

Zora stopped.

"…it's choosing."

A pause.

"…and it's choosing me."

The path ahead opened into a massive chamber.

At the center—

A core of light.

Massive.

Pulsing.

Alive.

Flare's breath caught.

"…that's…"

Raika finished it.

"…Eden."

Zora stepped forward.

Her eyes locked onto it.

"…yeah."

The light pulsed.

Stronger.

Faster.

Reacting.

To her.

Flare whispered.

"…it's responding to you…"

Zora didn't look away.

"…it's been waiting."

The chamber sealed behind them.

No exits.

No escape.

Only forward.

The Core pulsed again.

And this time—

It spoke.

"HOST ARRIVED."

Zora took another step.

"…I'm here."

The light intensified.

"FINAL PHASE PREPARATION."

Flare's voice shook slightly.

"…Zora… I don't think we can stop this if it starts—"

Zora raised her hand slightly.

"…we won't let it start."

Raika stepped beside her.

"…then we end it here."

The Core pulsed violently.

And the entire chamber lit up.

Because the system had reached its final threshold.

And the choice—

Was about to be made.
