Chapter 13 - CHAPTER 13: FRACTURED SYSTEM

The silence didn't last.

At first, it felt like victory.

A brief, fragile stillness that spread through the Core chamber as Eidolon's shattered frame dissolved into fading particles. The white glow surrounding them flickered, no longer steady, and no longer absolute.

Then everything broke.

Zora staggered.

The moment she pulled her hand back from the Core, the entire structure convulsed and shook. Light fractured into jagged streams, branching in every direction like a network splitting apart under strain.

"ERROR—ERROR—ERROR—"

The system's voice no longer sounded unified.

It overlapped.

Contradicted itself.

Raika moved instantly, catching Zora before she fell.

"…you're pushing too far."

Zora shook her head weakly.

"…no…"

Her voice was strained, but certain.

"…this is what it's supposed to do."

Flare looked around, eyes wide as her interface sparked violently.

"…uhhhh, I don't think 'total system meltdown' was part of the plan!"

The walls of the chamber shifted erratically now—sections phasing in and out, geometry and structures bending unnaturally. The once seamless structure of Eden Tower had become unstable, flickering between states like it couldn't decide what it was anymore.

"It's not melting down," Zora said.

She forced herself upright.

"It's… splitting."

Raika's gaze sharpened.

"…explain."

Zora looked toward the Core.

"…it's trying to hold one outcome."

A pause.

"…but I forced it to accept multiple."

Flare blinked.

"…you mean—"

"…it can't decide what reality is supposed to be anymore."

That realization hit all three of them at once.

"…that's worse," Flare muttered.

A deep rumble echoed through the tower.

Then—

The first fracture appeared.

Not in the walls.

In the air itself.

A thin line split open mid-space, glowing with unstable light. It pulsed once—then tore wider.

"…what is that?" Raika asked.

Zora's expression darkened.

"…a divergence."

Something stepped through.

Not a Valkyr.

Not a fragment.

A person.

But wrong.

Her form flickered between states—one moment wearing civilian clothing, the next armored, then something in between. Her face shifted slightly with each flicker, expressions overlapping, eyes glowing inconsistently.

Flare took a step back.

"…yeah, I hate that."

The figure looked at them.

Then spoke.

"MULTIPLE STATES DETECTED."

Her voice echoed in layers.

"SELECTING… SELECTING…"

Raika moved in front of the others.

"…another system construct."

Zora shook her head slowly.

"…no."

Her eyes narrowed.

"…she's human."

The figure twitched.

Her body convulsed slightly—

Then stabilized.

For a moment.

"…ERROR," she said.

"…I AM… NOT…"

Her voice broke.

Then sharpened again.

"…I AM EVOLVED."

Flare whispered:

"…that's not comforting."

The figure raised her arm.

Energy formed—

But unstable.

Flickering.

"…TARGETS IDENTIFIED."

Raika reacted instantly.

"…move!"

The blast fired—

But warped mid-air—

Splitting into multiple trajectories.

They scattered—

Barely avoiding it as it tore through the chamber walls.

"…it's not controlling it properly!" Flare shouted.

Zora stepped forward.

"…she's not choosing."

Raika glanced at her.

"…what?"

"…she's being forced to exist in multiple states."

The figure lunged—

Her speed fluctuating—

Fast—

Then slow—

Then fast again—

Raika intercepted—

Their clash was uneven—

Timing inconsistent—

"…unpredictable," Raika muttered.

Flare activated her interface again.

"…I can't lock onto a stable signal!"

Zora moved.

She stepped directly toward the figure.

"Zora—!" Flare shouted.

"…don't."

Zora raised her hand.

"…you don't have to fight."

The figure froze.

Her body flickered violently.

"…CONFLICT…"

Zora stepped closer.

"…you're still there."

"…NO—YES—NO—"

The figure's voice fractured.

Raika's grip tightened.

"…this is dangerous."

Zora didn't look away.

"…I know."

She reached out.

"…but this is what happens if we do nothing."

The figure screamed—

Energy surged—

But collapsed inward—

Her body dropped—

Unconscious.

Still.

Flare blinked.

"…you just… talked her down?"

Zora exhaled slowly.

"…barely."

Raika stepped forward, scanning the fallen girl.

"…unstable, but alive."

Zora looked toward the fractures forming across the chamber.

"…this is just the beginning."

More cracks appeared.

More splits.

And from each—

More figures.

Dozens.

All different.

All unstable.

All caught between states.

Flare's voice dropped.

"…okay, yeah, this is officially a big problem."

Raika stood ready.

"…they're multiplying."

Zora's expression hardened.

"…because the system doesn't know what to choose anymore."

One of the new figures stepped forward.

Unlike the others—

She was stable.

Fully formed.

Her dress was silky, short and godlike, hood up with gold mechanical trinkets and accessories.

She wore white sandals with long gold ropes wrapping round her legs.

A spiky halo stood at the back of her head.

Her movements controlled.

Her eyes—

Clear.

Not white.

Not flickering.

Focused.

"…interesting," she said.

Flare blinked.

"Okay…that one talks normally. I don't know if that's better or worse."

The woman tilted her head slightly.

"…so you're the anomaly."

Zora stepped forward.

"…who are you?"

A faint smile.

"…designation would be inaccurate."

A pause.

"…but you may call me Nyx."

Raika's stance tightened.

"…another construct?"

Nyx shook her head.

"…no."

Her eyes locked onto Zora.

"…I chose this."

Silence.

Zora's breath slowed.

"…you stabilized yourself."

Nyx nodded.

"…when the system fractured, I adapted."

Flare whispered:

"…she's like that Eidolon thing… but smarter."

Nyx smiled faintly.

"Awww, I'm flattered…but Eidolon was incomplete."

Her gaze sharpened.

"…I am not."

Raika stepped forward.

"…state your intent."

Nyx's expression didn't change.

"…survival."

A pause.

"…and evolution."

Zora's eyes narrowed.

"…you're going to let the Rewrite continue."

Nyx tilted her head.

"…of course."

The words landed cold.

"…why stop it?"

Zora clenched her fists.

"…because it's destroying people."

Nyx's smile faded slightly.

"…no."

Her voice was calm.

"…it's freeing them."

Flare scoffed.

"…yeah, because losing your mind and full control of it totally counts as freedom."

Nyx glanced at her.

"…only the weak break."

Raika's voice dropped.

"…then we'll stop you."

Nyx sighed softly.

"…you misunderstand."

She stepped back.

"…I'm not your enemy."

Zora's gaze sharpened.

"…then what are you?"

Nyx's eyes glowed faintly.

"…the future."

The fractures pulsed again.

More figures stepped through.

Some stable.

Some not.

Nyx turned slightly.

"…the system has lost control."

She looked back at Zora.

"…now we decide what comes next."

A pause.

"…you should be careful."

Zora didn't move.

"…why?"

Nyx smiled faintly.

"…because not all of us will agree with you."

And then—

She disappeared.

Gone.

Flare exhaled sharply.

"…okay, yeah, I REALLY REALLY don't like her."

Raika didn't relax.

"…she'll be a problem."

Zora stared at the space where Nyx had been.

"…no."

A pause.

"…she's proof."

Flare frowned.

"…proof of what?"

Zora turned slightly.

"…that choice changes everything."

Around them—

The system continued to fracture.

Unstable.

Unpredictable.

Alive in a way it had never been before.

And far beyond the tower—

The effects were spreading.

Because the Rewrite was no longer controlled.

It was evolving.

And now—

So was humanity.
