Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Walking Beside You

The rumors didn't stop.

If anything, they grew louder.

By the time the final bell rang, my name had spread across every corner of the school. Whispers trailed behind me like shadows, and every glance felt like judgment.

Still, one thing remained unchanged.

She was waiting for me.

Aizawa Reina stood by the classroom door, her school bag held neatly in front of her. As the last of our classmates left, she looked up and met my eyes.

"Are you heading home?" she asked softly.

"Yeah," I replied. "Like always."

She hesitated for a moment before speaking again.

"…May I walk with you?"

My heart skipped a beat.

"With me?"

She nodded. "If you don't mind."

Mind? How could I?

"I—I don't mind," I said quickly.

A faint smile graced her lips. "Thank you."

From the corner of my eye, I noticed a few students staring. Their expressions ranged from disbelief to resentment. The whispers had already begun again.

But this time, I didn't look away.

The Walk Home*

The evening sky glowed in shades of gold and rose as we stepped beyond the school gates. A gentle breeze carried the scent of blooming flowers, softening the tension that had followed me all day.

For a while, we walked in silence.

Not an awkward silence—but a peaceful one.

"You're stronger than I thought," Reina said at last.

I glanced at her. "I don't feel strong."

"Yet you're still here," she replied. "Most people would have run away by now."

I chuckled faintly. "Running away is my specialty. I'm just… trying something different."

She looked at me with quiet admiration. "I'm glad you are."

Her words warmed me more than the sunset.

After a pause, I asked, "Why did you really sit next to me that day?"

Reina's steps slowed.

"Do you remember the first week of school?" she asked.

I frowned. "Not clearly."

She smiled gently. "You dropped your notes in the hallway. Everyone walked past you."

A distant memory surfaced—papers scattered across the floor, laughter echoing around me.

"I remember," I said quietly.

"You were embarrassed," she continued. "But you still thanked the janitor who helped you pick them up. No one else noticed… but I did."

I blinked in surprise.

"You saw that?"

She nodded. "You treated him with kindness—without expecting anything in return. To you, he wasn't invisible."

Her gaze softened.

"That's why I wanted to know you."

For a moment, words failed me.

No one had ever paid attention to something so small.

"You're… giving me too much credit," I murmured.

"Not at all," she replied. "Kindness is rare."

Her smile was warm—gentle enough to melt the weight in my chest.

And for the first time, the rumors didn't matter.

The Truth Behind the Rumors

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A new notification flashed across the screen.

School Forum Update

Curious, I opened it—and froze.

A new post had appeared.

Title: "EXPOSED: The Fake Rumor About Aizawa Reina."

Attached was a screenshot revealing the original uploader's username.

My eyes widened. "Takeda…?"

Reina leaned closer. "The same Takeda Ren from earlier?"

"It looks like it."

The comments were already flooding in.

"So it was fake?"

"He edited the photo!"

"That's messed up…"

"He owes them an apology!"

A mix of relief and disbelief washed over me.

"The truth is finally coming out," I said.

Reina nodded, though her expression remained thoughtful. "Yes… but this may not be the end."

"You think there's more to it?"

"Takeda wouldn't act alone," she replied softly.

Before I could ask more—

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Slow, deliberate applause echoed behind us.

We turned.

Standing beneath the amber glow of the setting sun was Kurosaki Yuna.

Her sharp eyes gleamed with quiet amusement.

"Well done," she said. "You've survived the first storm."

My chest tightened. "Did you have something to do with that post being exposed?"

Yuna's lips curved into a faint smile.

"What do you think?"

Reina's gaze hardened. "Kurosaki-san."

Yuna ignored the warning and stepped closer.

"This school thrives on hierarchy," she said calmly. "I merely restored balance."

"You manipulated everything?" I asked.

"I revealed the truth," she corrected. "Nothing more."

Her eyes met mine—cool, calculating, yet strangely intrigued.

"You're stronger than you appear," she said softly. "Perhaps you're worth watching after all."

With that, she turned and walked away, her figure fading into the evening light.

Silence lingered in her wake.

"…She's terrifying," I muttered.

Reina sighed. "Yes. But she's not our enemy."

"Then what is she?"

Reina looked toward the horizon, where the sun dipped below the skyline.

"A storm we have yet to understand."

A Promise Beneath the Twilight

As we resumed our walk, the sky darkened into a canvas of deep blue.

"Thank you," I said quietly.

"For what?" Reina asked.

"For staying by my side."

She smiled—a gentle, radiant smile.

"Of course. After all…"

She hesitated before finishing her sentence.

"…we're friends, aren't we?"

The word echoed softly in my heart.

Friends.

"Yes," I replied, smiling back. "We are."

But deep down, I knew—

This was only the beginning of something far more complicated.

And perhaps…

Something far more beautiful.
