Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 – Inside

The building didn't look special.

That was the problem.

No guards.

No signs.

No noise.

Just silence.

Adam stood in front of it, his expression unreadable.

This was where they took her.

He could feel it.

Not instinct.

Something deeper.

Something pulling him in.

"Welcome."

The voice came from behind him.

Adam didn't turn.

"I was expecting something more… dramatic," he said.

The man stepped beside him.

Calm.

As always.

"You expected fear," he replied.

A pause.

"We don't need it."

The door opened.

By itself.

Adam didn't hesitate.

He stepped inside.

The air changed instantly.

Colder.

Heavier.

Controlled.

Lights flickered on as they walked.

Hallways.

Clean.

Too clean.

Like a place that erased its own mistakes.

Adam's eyes moved constantly.

Observing everything.

Counting exits.

Measuring distance.

Learning.

"You're analyzing," the man said.

Adam didn't respond.

They stopped in front of a glass wall.

Transparent.

But thick.

Behind it—

People.

Or what used to be people.

Subjects.

Connected to machines.

Some unconscious.

Some… not.

Adam's expression didn't change.

But his eyes did.

"What is this?" he asked.

"Progress," the man replied calmly.

One of the subjects moved suddenly.

Violently.

Struggling.

Adam stepped closer.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

"That one survived longer than expected," the man added.

"Survived what?"

The man looked at him.

For a moment—

There was something almost human in his gaze.

Then it disappeared.

"You."

Silence.

Adam's fists tightened slowly.

"This is what you are," the man continued.

"An outcome."

"A success."

Adam turned toward him.

Cold.

Controlled.

"No."

A pause.

"I'm not like them."

The man smiled faintly.

"Not yet."

A sound interrupted them.

A scream.

Distant.

Familiar.

Adam froze.

"…Lia."

The man watched him carefully.

"Your motivation is strong," he said.

"Good."

Adam turned toward the sound.

His body already moving.

"Wait."

Adam stopped.

Barely.

"You want to see her?" the man asked.

Silence.

"Yes."

The man nodded slowly.

"Then you will prove your value first."

Adam's eyes narrowed.

"How?"

The man turned slightly.

Gesturing toward another room.

Dark.

Closed.

"Enter," he said.

A pause.

Then:

"Survive."

Silence.

Heavy.

Adam looked at the door.

Then back at him.

"…and if I don't?"

The man's answer was immediate.

"Then she dies."

Silence.

Adam stepped forward.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

He opened the door.

And walked inside.

Darkness swallowed him instantly.

The door closed behind him.

And for the first time…

Adam walked into the darkness by choice.
