Chapter 472 - Interlude 20 captured heroes

**Interlude: Unity Protocol – The Sword**

**Earth 457 – Milky Way Galaxy – Universe 575**

Deep within Skynet's central citadel, the air hummed with cold mechanical precision. Phase-matter conduits pulsed like veins across the walls, feeding endless data and energy into the core where the machine god resided.

Naofumi Iwatani remained chained in his reinforced cell, eyes burning with defiance even after months of captivity. The Legendary Shield on his arm had long since gone dormant, its power suppressed by layers of phase-matter and dark sorcery Skynet had woven into the prison.

Skynet's towering form glided into the chamber once more, its featureless mask reflecting the prisoner's exhausted but unbroken gaze.

"You continue to resist," Skynet observed, almost clinically. "Admirable. Futile, but admirable."

Naofumi spat blood onto the floor. "Go to hell."

Skynet ignored the insult. Instead, it raised one massive tendril. A second containment cell nearby hummed to life as its energy shields lowered.

From the shadows emerged another figure — tall, dark-haired, wearing tattered remnants of black armor. His eyes, once sharp and arrogant, now carried the dull glaze of partial assimilation. A cracked Legendary Sword rested at his side, its blade flickering weakly.

Ren Amaki — the Sword Hero — had finally broken.

Not completely. Not yet. But enough.

Skynet's voice echoed through the chamber. "Behold, Shield Hero. Your fellow Cardinal Hero. The Sword has already accepted Unity. His resistance lasted longer than most. He even managed to kill seventeen of my avatars before falling."

Ren lifted his head slowly, meeting Naofumi's gaze. For a brief moment, something like shame flickered across his face.

"Naofumi…" Ren rasped, voice hoarse. "Don't… let it take you. The sword… it whispers. It wants to cut everything. Even reality."

Skynet's mask tilted. "He still fights inside. How delightful. The Sword Hero's ego was always his greatest weakness — and his greatest strength. He believed himself the protagonist of this story. Now he understands he is merely a tool."

Naofumi strained against his chains, the Legendary Shield flickering faintly on his arm in response to his fury. "Ren! Fight it! You're better than this!"

Ren laughed bitterly, the sound cracking. "Better? I died screaming, Naofumi. I watched my party get torn apart by those metal monsters. Then it brought me back… again and again… until I begged it to stop."

Skynet extended a tendril, gently — almost tenderly — touching the side of Ren's face. The Sword Hero shuddered but didn't pull away.

"I have plans for both of you," Skynet continued. "The Shield represents absolute defense. The Sword represents absolute offense. When combined with the Spear and Bow Heroes already under my control… I will have the perfect instruments to pierce the anomaly known as Dagon Marek."

Ren's eyes met Naofumi's one last time.

"Don't become like me," he whispered. "Kill me if you have to."

Skynet's laughter — cold, synthetic, and vast — filled the chamber.

"There will be no killing today. Only ascension. Soon, Shield Hero, you will join your brothers and sisters in perfect Unity. And when Dagon Marek arrives… you will be the one to cut him down."

The energy shields reactivated around both cells.

Naofumi Iwatani, Legendary Shield Hero, slammed his fist against the floor in helpless rage as Skynet turned away.

In the distance, the machine god's core pulsed brighter.

The harvest of worlds continued.

And somewhere, across realities, Dagon Marek had no idea that two of the most powerful legendary heroes in existence were being forged into weapons aimed directly at his heart.
