Chapter 31 - Chapter 30

6 5.

Southside United still led.

But the lead felt thin now.

Thin like glass.

One wrong touch, one late step, one bad clearance, and it would crack all over again.

Yusuke stood near the center circle for a brief second, chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Sweat ran down the side of his face, but his eyes stayed sharp. He could hear everything now. Cleats scraping grass. Short breaths. The slap of the ball against someone's boot. Riku calling for shape. Yuma barking at Sora to tuck in. Tsubasa's voice from the back, calm as always, telling everyone to stay awake.

Kaito walked past him and clicked his tongue.

"Don't disappear now."

Yusuke glanced at him.

"You too."

Neither smiled.

Neither looked away first.

Then the whistle blew, and the game moved again.

Kazuo tapped the ball back to Shin.

Shin took one touch and held it for half a second, just enough to force Southside United to think. Hiroto stepped forward carefully. Not too much. Not too little. Riku stayed central, shoulders loose, reading the passing lane. Takumi stayed narrow on the right side, ready to jump if Shin tried to switch the play too quickly. Sora stayed a little deeper on the left than usual, clearly remembering the last counterattack that had nearly buried them.

Shin passed to Toma.

Toma passed right back.

Then Shin played wide to Renji.

Yuma stepped up immediately.

"Come on then."

Renji rolled the ball under his foot once, almost lazily, then tried to burst down the line. Yuma matched him, shoulder to shoulder, forcing him wider. Renji cut back and slipped the ball behind him toward Kenta, who had started an overlapping run from deep.

Sora noticed it late.

"Kenta's going!"

Takumi reacted first. He sprinted across and got there just before Kenta could cross, sticking out his foot to knock the ball away. It rolled toward the sideline, and both players chased it. Takumi reached it first and poked it upfield.

Not far.

Just enough.

Riku got there.

Shin got there too.

For a second, the two of them met in the middle, both stepping into the same loose ball with the same idea. Riku leaned his body in harder. Shin stayed balanced and tried to twist free. The ball ricocheted out behind them.

Hiroto read it first.

He took it cleanly and instantly passed to Yusuke.

Yusuke had Daizen behind him before the pass even arrived. He could feel the pressure already. He cushioned the ball with the inside of his foot, took the contact, and laid it back first time to Hiroto.

"Again," Yusuke said.

Hiroto nodded and switched it to Sora.

Sora received on the move this time. Renji flew toward him again, but instead of forcing the dribble, Sora slowed just enough to let Masaru shift toward him too. Then he played it back to Riku.

Short.

Simple.

Safe.

Southside United had stopped trying to win every duel with one move. They were moving the ball more patiently now, making Ironclad work.

Daniel D.'s voice came from the sideline.

"Keep the ball moving!"

Riku heard it and pointed forward.

"Don't rush! Pull them out!"

Yusuke watched Daizen as Riku carried the ball a few steps. Daizen was still calm, still reading, still impossible to shake completely. But there was one thing different now.

He was reacting a fraction later.

Not much.

Just enough to matter if Yusuke timed it perfectly.

The ball reached Takumi again. Kenta pressed. Takumi passed inside to Hiroto. Toma stepped. Hiroto rolled it past him and gave it straight back to Riku.

One touch.

Two touch.

Move.

It looked simple.

But every pass was dragging Ironclad a little bit farther from where they wanted to stand.

Then Sora made a sudden diagonal run inside.

Renji followed him.

That left the wide lane open.

Yuma saw it from the back and shouted.

"Takumi, line!"

Takumi understood immediately. He drifted wide at the same moment Riku slipped the ball out to him. Kenta had been tucked inside a little too much and now had to sprint all the way out just to get close.

Takumi looked up.

Yusuke moved toward the edge of the box.

Kaito stayed higher, almost shoulder to shoulder with Ryo.

Takumi crossed low and hard.

Kaito attacked it first.

Ryo slid with him.

The ball skimmed off Kaito's boot and changed direction just enough to kill the shot. It rolled loose inside the area.

Yusuke took one step toward it.

Daizen took one too.

Daizen got there first and swept it away with a single clean touch.

No wasted movement.

No panic.

Still there.

Still in the way.

The clearance only went as far as Hiroto.

He did not shoot.

He controlled it and gave it back to Riku.

Riku slowed the tempo again.

That short reset was enough to stop Ironclad from countering, and enough to frustrate Kazuo.

Kazuo turned toward Shin.

"They're stalling."

"They're controlling," Shin replied.

Kazuo smirked.

"Same thing."

Shin did not answer. He was watching Yusuke instead.

The next attack came from Ironclad.

Shin received from Toma and turned sharply to the left side, drawing Hiroto with him. Then he punched a pass between the lines toward Hayate. Hayate took one touch and immediately laid it into Kazuo's path.

Kazuo exploded.

Again.

Daichi moved with him early this time and got enough of a shoulder in to stop the first burst. Kazuo didn't break through cleanly, so instead he cut back and clipped the ball toward Renji on the far side.

Renji met it in stride and crossed first time.

The delivery was high and awkward. Tsubasa stayed on his line for half a second, then came out hard with both hands raised. He punched it clear through traffic.

The ball flew out near the edge of the area where Toma waited. Toma chested it down and drove a low shot through bodies.

Ren blocked it.

The rebound bounced right back into danger.

Kazuo moved.

Of course he moved.

But this time Daichi was there too, and he got a boot through it just before Kazuo could swing. The clearance was ugly. It went up more than out. Everyone paused under it for a split second.

Yuma yelled first.

"Mine!"

He rose with Renji, got his forehead to it, and headed the ball out toward the touchline.

Southside United survived again.

Breathing grew louder.

The game was starting to feel stretched.

Yusuke wiped sweat from his chin with the back of his hand and looked around. Everyone's legs were heavier now. Even Kaito was slower to reset after runs. Even Shin had started choosing when to press instead of pressing constantly.

This was where little moments mattered most.

A throw in for Southside United gave them a few seconds of stillness.

Takumi stood on the line with the ball in his hands, looking for options. Sora pointed to feet. Kaito wanted it long. Yusuke stood between them, not calling for anything.

Takumi threw it short to Hiroto.

Hiroto gave it right back.

Takumi took one touch, then played inside to Riku.

Shin arrived.

Riku used his body to shield the ball and rolled it away just before Shin's foot could get through. Then he slipped it back to Yusuke, who had dropped a little deeper again.

Daizen came with him.

Yusuke felt it.

He let the ball run across his body instead of stopping it dead. That tiny movement bought him half a yard. Enough to turn his hips and play a quick pass out to Sora.

Sora controlled, looked up, and instead of forcing another cross, he slowed down.

"Come on," he muttered, almost to himself.

Masaru held his position.

Renji recovered behind.

Sora clicked his tongue and passed back to Hiroto.

Again.

Again.

Again.

This was the filler part of football that people overlooked. The passing. The resetting. The small decisions that did not become highlights but decided whether highlights were even possible.

Southside United were making Ironclad run.

Hiroto understood it now.

So did Riku.

Even Yusuke, who had once only cared about the final shot, could feel the point of it in his legs.

Pull.

Shift.

Wait.

Break.

The break almost came when Riku suddenly pinged a pass into Kaito's feet. Kaito took it on the half turn and fired from distance before anyone expected him to.

The shot was hard.

Too hard.

It flew just over the crossbar.

Kaito grabbed his head.

"Tch!"

Yusuke looked at him.

"That was there?"

Kaito kept staring at the goal.

"Not for long enough."

That answer told Yusuke everything. Kaito felt it too. The game was turning into a battle of shrinking openings.

Tsubasa restarted play with a long kick. Jin won the first header, but Hiroto won the second ball. He flicked it to Riku, who instantly guided it into Takumi's path on the right.

Takumi drove forward, Kenta pressing from the inside. Instead of crossing early, Takumi cut inward and played a sharp pass along the ground toward Yusuke.

Daizen stepped across.

Yusuke did not fight him.

He let the pass go through his legs untouched.

Riku had continued his run and arrived onto it.

For a split second, Southside United had broken the line.

Riku shot low.

Eiji got down fast and parried it out.

The save drew a loud reaction from both sides.

"Again!" Sora shouted.

Kaito sprinted after the rebound, but Ryo beat him to it and launched it out for another throw.

Riku breathed out hard.

"That was it."

"Almost," Yusuke said.

Daizen glanced at him.

"You're trying different things now."

Yusuke looked back.

"…Yeah."

Daizen said nothing else.

The next few minutes were messy.

Not bad.

Just messy.

Hiroto fouled Toma to stop a dangerous break.

Shin took the free kick quickly and nearly caught everyone sleeping, but Ren read it and cleared before Kazuo could touch it.

Sora tracked all the way back to help Yuma on the wing and actually won the ball clean, earning a surprised look from Yuma.

"Didn't know you could defend."

"Shut up."

Takumi made a smart tactical foul near the sideline when Renji almost escaped him, and Kenta shoved him lightly after the whistle. No real fight came from it, but the irritation was there now.

Even Tsubasa took a moment before a goal kick, standing over the ball longer than usual and forcing everyone to breathe.

Everything was slowing and tightening at the same time.

Then came the scene that changed the feel of the chapter.

Riku got the ball in midfield with space for the first time in several minutes.

Not much space.

Enough.

Shin was a step late.

Yusuke saw it.

Kaito saw it.

Takumi started a supporting run to the right.

Sora stayed wide left.

Hiroto held behind the play.

Riku took two quick touches forward.

Daizen glanced between Yusuke and Kaito.

Ryo shifted toward the center.

Jin stepped higher.

The whole field seemed to bend around the next decision.

Yusuke did not run straight.

He curved inside, then out, then inside again.

Small movements.

Tiny ones.

But they made Daizen keep thinking instead of committing.

Riku drove one more step.

Then he passed.

The ball flew toward Yusuke's feet at the edge of the box.

Yusuke received on the move.

Daizen finally stepped hard.

Ryo came across too.

Kaito screamed.

"Now!"

Everything compressed.

Yusuke could shoot.

Probably blocked.

He could square it to Kaito.

Maybe saved.

He could touch it back to Riku.

Maybe too slow.

For one split second, all three options sat there together.

And this time, he did not rush.

He rolled the ball under his sole and dragged both defenders with him.

That tiny delay changed everything.

Kaito broke free for just a moment.

Riku held at the edge for the cutback.

Takumi kept his run alive on the right.

Yusuke opened his body

and the chapter ended right there.
