Chapter 4 - Chapter Four

Chapter Four: When Everything Began to Break

The next morning did not feel like a new day.

It felt heavy.

Audrey woke up with a strange fear sitting quietly in her chest. The kind of fear she could not explain, but could not ignore.

She turned to look at her mother.

"Mama," she called gently.

No response.

Her heart skipped.

She quickly got up and moved closer. "Mama?"

This time, her mother opened her eyes slowly, forcing a weak smile.

"I am fine," she whispered.

But Audrey could see it clearly now.

She was not fine.

Things changed after that morning.

The small signs Audrey had once ignored became impossible to overlook.

Her mother got tired easily.

She struggled to breathe after simple tasks.

Sometimes she sat in silence, holding her chest, her face pale.

And still, she kept saying the same thing.

"I am fine."

Audrey could not take it anymore.

"We are going to the hospital," she said one afternoon, her voice firm.

Her mother shook her head immediately. "There is no need."

"There is every need," Audrey replied, her eyes filled with worry. "This is not normal."

Her father sat quietly in the corner, his silence louder than words.

"Please," Audrey added softly.

There was a long pause.

Then finally, her mother nodded.

The hospital confirmed what Audrey feared.

The doctor looked at them seriously.

"She has a heart condition," he said. "It has been there for a while."

Audrey felt her world tilt.

"For a while?" she repeated. "What do you mean for a while?"

The doctor glanced briefly at her mother before speaking again.

"She was here weeks ago."

Audrey turned sharply. "Mama?"

Her mother looked away.

The truth came out slowly.

The diagnosis.

The warning.

The missed treatment.

And the money.

"You used your treatment money for my exam?" Audrey's voice broke as she spoke.

Her mother tried to reach for her hand. "It was worth it."

"No," Audrey said, shaking her head, tears falling freely now. "No, it was not worth your life."

The doctor cleared his throat gently.

"She needs treatment immediately," he said. "Medication, regular checkups, and possibly surgery if it gets worse."

"How much?" Audrey's father asked quietly.

The doctor mentioned the amount.

The room fell silent.

It was too much.

Far beyond what they could afford.

They returned home with more than just medicine.

They returned with reality.

The debt her mother had borrowed was still there.

The cost of treatment stood in front of them like a mountain.

And the little hope Audrey had left was beginning to crumble.

That night, Audrey sat alone outside.

The sky was dark, the air still.

Her mind was loud.

The scholarship was gone.

Her mother was sick.

Money was nowhere to be found.

Everything was falling apart at once.

"I will fix this," she whispered to herself.

But the words felt empty.

For the first time, Audrey did not know how.

Inside the house, her mother watched her through the window.

A soft, painful smile rested on her lips.

She had tried to protect her daughter from this.

But now, the burden had found its way back.
