Chapter 6 - Chapter Six

The Day Everything Changed

The road to the clinic felt longer than it should.

Audrey ran without thinking, her breath uneven, her heart pounding loudly in her ears. The voices of the men who brought the news echoed in her mind.

"He had an accident…"

She refused to accept it. Refused to imagine anything worse.

Not now. Not when they needed him.

When she arrived, the small clinic was quiet.

Too quiet.

A nurse looked up as Audrey rushed in.

"My father… he was brought here. Where is he?" she asked, her voice shaking.

The nurse hesitated.

That was all it took.

Audrey's heart dropped.

"Where is he?" she asked again, louder this time.

The nurse pointed toward a room.

Audrey moved slowly now.

Each step heavier than the last.

When she entered, she saw him.

Lying still.

Too still.

"Daddy?" she called softly.

No response.

She moved closer, her hands trembling as she touched him.

Cold.

"No…" she whispered.

"No, no, no…"

Her knees gave way as she fell beside him, her hands gripping his shirt as if she could pull him back.

"Wake up," she cried. "Please wake up. You cannot leave us like this."

But he did not move.

He had died on the way.

Before help could reach him.

Before he could return home.

Before he could save his family.

Audrey did not know how long she stayed there.

Crying.

Begging.

Breaking.

When she finally returned home, her eyes were swollen, her body weak.

Her mother was waiting.

"Where is your father?" she asked.

Audrey froze.

The words refused to come out.

She looked at her father's friend who stood beside her.

He understood immediately.

"We had to keep him for observation," the man said quickly. "He will be fine."

Her mother nodded slowly, though doubt flickered in her eyes.

That night, Audrey cried in silence.

Not just for the father she had lost.

But for the truth she had to hide.

Days passed.

The house felt emptier.

Quieter.

Heavier.

Audrey moved like someone carrying a weight too big for her shoulders. She took care of her mother, forcing strength she did not feel.

But her mother began to notice.

"Why has he not come back?" she asked one afternoon.

Audrey forced a smile. "He is still resting."

"For this long?" her mother pressed gently.

Audrey looked away. "The doctor said he needs time."

But mothers know.

Even when nothing is said.

They feel it.

One evening, her mother held her hand.

"Audrey," she said softly, "tell me the truth."

Audrey's heart began to race.

"What truth, Mama?"

Her mother's eyes searched hers.

"Something is wrong."

Audrey could not hold it anymore.

The tears came before the words.

"Mama…" her voice broke.

Her mother tightened her grip. "What happened?"

Audrey shook her head, crying harder now.

"He is gone," she finally said.

Silence.

Deep and painful.

Her mother stared at her, as if trying to understand.

"No…" she whispered.

Audrey nodded through her tears.

"He did not make it."

The cry that followed was not loud.

It was soft.

Broken.

The kind of pain that comes from deep within.

After that day, everything changed again.

Grief settled into the house like a shadow.

Her mother became weaker.

Not just physically.

But emotionally.

It was as if losing her husband had taken the last strength she had left.

Audrey watched it all helplessly.

Her father was gone.

Her mother was fading.

And the world was not slowing down for her.

A few days later, Audrey returned to the hospital.

She needed answers.

She needed hope.

Anything.

The doctor looked at her with serious eyes.

"She is not getting better," he said.

Audrey felt her chest tighten.

"What can we do?" she asked quickly.

"There is a surgery," the doctor replied. "But it needs to be done soon."

"How soon?"

The doctor paused.

"As soon as possible."

Audrey swallowed. "And if we cannot do it?"

The silence that followed was enough.

But the doctor still spoke.

"Then she has only a few months."

The words hit her like a storm.

A few months.

That was all.

Audrey stood up slowly, her ears ringing, her vision blurred with tears.

"No…" she whispered.

This could not be happening.

Not again.

Not like this.

She walked out of the hospital, her steps unsteady.

Then she began to run.

Tears streamed down her face as everything crashed over her at once.

Her father was gone.

Her mother was dying.

And she had nothing.

She ran blindly into the road.

A loud horn blasted.

A car screeched to a halt just inches away from her.

Audrey froze.

Her heart pounding wildly.

Her tears falling without control.

For a moment, she stood there between life and death.

And she did not know which one she feared more.
