They didn't go far from the chamber.
Zareth stopped just outside the underground hall, near the long corridor that led back to the academy. The air there felt normal again, but it didn't help. The weight of what they had just heard stayed with them.
Kael leaned against the wall and let out a long breath. "So let me get this straight. There's something sealed under the academy that can end everything, and it's waking up."
No one corrected him.
Lyra crossed her arms, clearly thinking. "It said it chose to be sealed. That means it's not trying to break out randomly. Something changed."
Zareth looked ahead, quiet for a moment. "Or something triggered it."
Kael glanced at him. "You?"
Zareth didn't deny it. "Possibly."
That answer didn't make Kael feel any better.
For a few seconds, none of them spoke. The silence wasn't peaceful. It felt like the kind that comes before something goes wrong.
Then it happened.
A low vibration ran through the ground.
Not strong enough to knock them down, but enough to make all three of them notice immediately.
Lyra looked back toward the chamber. "Again."
Zareth turned without hesitation. "Stay alert."
They went back in.
The moment they stepped inside, the difference was clear.
The cracks on the gate had spread.
Not a little. Not slowly.
Noticeably.
Kael straightened. "That definitely wasn't like this before."
The air felt heavier now. It was harder to breathe, like something invisible was pressing down on them.
Zareth walked closer again, but this time more carefully.
The gate pulsed once.
Then again.
Each pulse felt like a heartbeat, but not a human one. Something slower. Older.
Lyra frowned. "It's getting stronger."
Before Zareth could respond, a sharp sound echoed.
CRACK.
A small piece of the seal broke off from the edge of the gate and fell to the ground.
All three of them froze.
Kael stared at it. "That's… not good."
The moment the fragment touched the floor, it didn't stay solid. It dissolved into dark particles, like dust fading into the air.
And then the temperature dropped.
Not slightly.
Instantly.
Lyra's breath became visible. "What is this…"
Zareth's expression hardened. "It's leaking."
"Leaking?" Kael repeated. "You're talking about it like it's water."
Zareth didn't look at him. "It's worse than that."
Another pulse.
Stronger this time.
The cracks widened again, spreading across the surface of the gate like veins.
Then the voice returned.
"You came back."
It sounded clearer now.
Closer.
Lyra held her ground, but her voice lowered. "Something's different."
Zareth didn't disagree.
"What changed?" he asked.
There was a brief pause, like the voice was thinking.
Then it answered.
"The seal is weakening faster than expected."
Kael shook his head. "That's not an answer."
But Zareth caught the meaning.
"You didn't plan this," he said.
Silence.
Then, quietly, the voice replied, "No."
That changed everything.
Lyra looked at Zareth. "So something else is causing it?"
Before he could answer, the ground shook again.
This time, harder.
The gate pulsed violently, and another crack split across its center.
Then something new happened.
From inside the crack, a thin stream of dark energy slipped out.
It didn't explode or spread wildly.
It moved slowly, almost carefully, like it was exploring.
Kael stepped back immediately. "Yeah, I don't like that at all."
The energy touched the ground.
For a second, nothing happened.
Then the stone beneath it began to change.
It didn't break.
It didn't melt.
It simply disappeared, leaving a smooth, empty space behind.
Lyra's eyes widened. "It erased it…"
Zareth's gaze sharpened. "Not destroyed. Removed."
That was worse.
The energy continued moving, leaving small trails of nothingness wherever it passed.
Zareth raised his hand, preparing to stop it, but the voice spoke again.
"Don't touch it."
He paused.
"Why?" he asked.
"If you interact with it now, the seal will collapse faster."
Zareth didn't like taking instructions from something like that, but he didn't move.
Lyra watched the dark energy carefully. "It's not attacking us."
"No," Zareth said. "It's not interested in us."
Kael frowned. "That's supposed to make me feel better?"
Before anyone could say more, the energy suddenly stopped moving.
It hovered in place for a moment.
Then, slowly, it turned.
Toward them.
All three of them went still.
For a brief second, it felt like something was looking at them through it.
Not with eyes.
But with awareness.
Then, just as quickly, it pulled back.
The energy retreated into the crack.
The gate went still again.
The chamber fell silent.
No one spoke for a few seconds.
Kael was the first to break it. "Okay. I'm officially done pretending this is normal."
Lyra exhaled slowly. "That wasn't just power."
Zareth nodded slightly. "It's waking up."
He turned away from the gate again, but this time his expression was more serious than before.
"Not fully," he added. "But enough to affect the world."
Kael looked at him. "So what happens now?"
Zareth didn't answer immediately.
He thought for a moment.
Then he said, "Now it spreads."
Lyra's eyes narrowed. "What do you mean?"
Zareth looked back at the gate one last time.
"That energy," he said, "it won't stay contained forever."
A pause.
"It's already looking for a way out."
Above them, far beyond the academy, the sky shifted slightly.
Something invisible moved through it.
Quiet.
Unnoticed.
But present.
Back in the chamber, a new crack formed.
This time, deeper than all the others.
And for the first time
it didn't stop.
