No one felt safe anymore
Even inside the hall, surrounded by people, the fear didn't go away
It only got quieter
Heavier
The twelve marked students were no longer sitting apart
They had been moved closer together, watched from every side
Like staying near others could somehow protect them
It didn't
Kael stood near the entrance, arms crossed, watching everything
"I don't like this setup," he said
Lyra glanced at him
"None of us do"
"No, I mean it," Kael continued "We're gathering all the targets in one place What if that thing wants exactly that"
That made her pause
Zareth, standing in the center, heard it too
But he didn't immediately respond
Instead, he was focused on something else
"The pattern is incomplete," he said
Lyra turned to him
"You figured something out"
"Part of it," Zareth replied
Kael stepped closer
"Then say it"
Zareth looked at the marked students
Then at the empty space around them
"It doesn't just mark randomly," he said "It observes first"
Lyra nodded slightly
"We already know that"
Zareth shook his head
"No, not just observing behavior"
A short pause
"It's observing existence itself"
Kael frowned
"That sounds way too complicated for something that just erases people"
Zareth looked at him
"That's exactly the problem"
Silence followed
Lyra spoke more slowly now
"You're saying it's not deciding based on actions or strength"
Zareth nodded
"It's judging whether someone should exist at all"
That changed the atmosphere instantly
Kael let out a dry laugh
"Yeah, that's worse"
Before they could go further, one of the students in the group suddenly stood up
"I can't stay here anymore," he said
His voice was shaking but determined
"I'm not just going to sit and wait to disappear"
Lyra stepped forward
"Wait, you shouldn't—"
But he was already moving
He pushed past the others and started heading toward the exit
Kael sighed
"This is exactly what we didn't need"
Zareth didn't stop him
Lyra looked at him
"You're just going to let him go"
Zareth's eyes followed the student
"Yes"
She frowned
"Why"
Zareth's answer was simple
"Because I want to see what happens"
The student reached the doorway
For a moment, nothing happened
He hesitated
Then took another step
Still nothing
Kael shook his head
"Maybe it only attacks when they're alone"
Zareth didn't reply
The student stepped fully into the hallway
And then
It happened
The air around him shifted instantly
He froze mid-step
"What is this—"
His voice cut off
The space around his body distorted
Not violently
Not suddenly
Smoothly
Like reality itself was adjusting
Lyra's eyes widened
"It's faster now"
Zareth watched closely
Not moving
The student tried to move again
But his leg didn't respond
He looked down
It was gone
No pain
No blood
Just missing
He collapsed immediately
"Help me!" he shouted
Panic fully taking over now
Kael stepped forward instinctively
But Zareth stopped him again
"Wait"
The presence was stronger this time
Clearer
The distortion didn't flicker
It held steady
Zareth narrowed his eyes
"It's not hesitating anymore"
Lyra stepped closer despite the risk
"We can't just watch him disappear"
Zareth's voice stayed calm
"If we interfere too early, we learn nothing"
That was hard to accept
But she didn't argue
The student screamed again
His other leg began to fade
Then something changed
The distortion paused
Just for a second
Zareth noticed it instantly
"…There"
He moved
Faster than before
His hand went straight to the exact point where the distortion felt strongest
This time, he didn't just touch it
He forced his energy into it
The reaction was immediate
The space cracked
A sharp sound echoed through the hallway
For a brief moment
everything stopped
The student's body stopped fading
The distortion froze
Then
Something pushed back
Hard
Zareth was forced one step back this time
His eyes sharpened
"It's stronger"
The voice returned
Closer than ever
"You continue to interfere"
Zareth didn't step back again
"Yes"
The answer was steady
The presence pulsed once
Then the distortion slowly pulled away
The student collapsed fully to the ground
Breathing heavily
Both legs gone
But still alive
Lyra rushed to him immediately
"You're okay You're still here"
Kael looked at Zareth
"That didn't stop it completely"
Zareth nodded
"But it delayed it"
Lyra looked up
"So we can interrupt the process"
Zareth corrected her
"No"
A short pause
"We can resist it"
Silence settled again
Kael frowned
"Resist is not enough We need to stop it completely"
Zareth looked toward the hallway where the distortion had disappeared
"That's not possible yet"
Lyra's voice was quieter now
"Then what does it want"
Zareth didn't answer immediately
He thought about the way it moved
The way it paused
The way it reacted
Then he said
"It's testing limits"
Kael crossed his arms
"Limits of what"
Zareth's eyes turned serious
"Ours"
Deep below
inside the cracked gate
something shifted again
Not just observing now
Learning
And slowly
Adapting
