Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — Evolution

The notification remained in Ethan's vision, sharp and impossible to ignore even in the middle of the fight. Skill Evolution Available. The timing was precise, almost calculated, as if the system had been waiting for this exact moment. Ethan did not question it. He didn't have the luxury to hesitate.

The Shadow Fang Beast did not give him time to think.

It moved again.

This time, its speed increased.

The distance between them vanished in an instant as its claw tore forward with far greater force than before. Ethan reacted immediately, shifting his body to avoid the direct strike, but the pressure behind the attack still grazed past him, forcing him off balance. The ground beneath his feet cracked slightly as he slid back.

It was adapting.

Not just reacting—but escalating.

Ethan steadied himself quickly, his breathing tightening for a fraction of a second before returning to control. His eyes remained locked on the creature, tracking every shift in its posture. The earlier hits had proven one thing: it was not invulnerable. But the cost of reaching those weak points was high, and he could not afford repeated mistakes.

The system prompt flickered again, as if urging him.

He made the decision.

"Evolve."

The response was immediate.

[Skill: Basic Combat Instinct → Advanced Combat Instinct]

A sharp sensation cut through his mind, not painful, but intense. It was as if layers of understanding were being reorganized and refined at once. Movements, angles, timing, positioning—concepts that had required conscious effort before now aligned more naturally, forming a clearer and faster response system within his perception.

The world seemed to slow.

Not physically—but in the way he processed it.

The Shadow Fang Beast lunged again.

This time, Ethan moved before the attack fully formed.

He stepped to the side with minimal motion, avoiding the strike by a margin so small it would have been impossible moments ago. At the same time, he shifted forward, entering the creature's range with deliberate precision.

His strike landed at the same joint as before.

Cleaner.

Deeper.

The creature reacted violently, its body twisting as it attempted to counter. But Ethan had already moved. He pivoted away from the retaliation before it could connect, his positioning already adjusted for the next exchange.

The difference was immediate.

Every movement felt sharper.

More efficient.

Less wasted motion.

Ethan did not stop. He pressed forward, forcing the creature to respond rather than allowing it to dictate the pace. Each step, each shift in weight, each attack carried intent. He was no longer reacting to the fight.

He was controlling it.

The Shadow Fang Beast adjusted quickly, its attacks becoming tighter, more focused. But for the first time, it was slightly behind. Its movements were still fast, still powerful, but Ethan could see them more clearly now. The patterns were no longer overwhelming.

They were readable.

That changed everything.

Another clash.

The creature struck low. Ethan stepped over the attack, redirecting his momentum and countering immediately with a downward strike to the same weakened joint. The impact forced a visible reaction this time, the creature's posture shifting as its balance faltered again.

Ethan followed without hesitation.

A second strike.

Then a third.

Each one targeting the same structural weakness.

The Shadow Fang Beast let out a deeper, more aggressive growl, its movements becoming more forceful as it attempted to break the rhythm. Its tail lashed out again, faster than before, aiming to force distance.

Ethan didn't retreat far.

Just enough.

Then he re-engaged.

The fight had shifted into a different phase.

It was no longer about survival alone.

Now, it was about finishing it.

Ethan circled slightly, forcing the creature to turn with him. Its movements were no longer perfectly stable. The repeated strikes had begun to accumulate, creating a subtle but critical imbalance.

That was all he needed.

The Shadow Fang Beast lunged one final time, committing more force than before in an attempt to overwhelm him.

Ethan stepped in.

Not away.

Inside.

He lowered his body and moved along the attack path, letting the main strike pass over him while positioning himself directly beneath the creature's center of movement. His hand shot upward, locking onto the already weakened joint.

Then he drove his full weight into the motion.

A sharp crack echoed.

The creature's body stiffened instantly, its momentum collapsing as its structure gave way at the critical point. The attack failed mid-motion, and its body crashed heavily against the ground.

Ethan stepped back immediately, maintaining distance as the creature struggled for a brief moment.

Then it stopped.

Completely.

Silence returned.

Ethan remained still for several seconds, confirming there was no further movement. Only when he was certain did he allow his breathing to deepen slightly.

The system responded.

[Elite-class entity defeated]

[High-grade energy absorbed]

[Major reward granted]

Ethan's gaze shifted to the interface as it expanded.

Reward Options:

Strength +5

Agility +5

Skill Upgrade: Advanced Combat Instinct → Combat Prediction

This time, the decision carried more weight than any before. Attributes would increase his immediate capability, but the third option represented something far more valuable—an evolution of perception that could influence every future fight.

Ethan did not take long.

"Skill upgrade."

[Selection confirmed]

The change was immediate.

His perception sharpened again, but this time, it extended further. It was no longer just about reacting or reading movement. It was about anticipating it. Subtle shifts in posture, tension in muscles, direction of force—signals that could now be interpreted before the action fully occurred.

Not perfect.

But enough.

Ethan exhaled slowly, adjusting to the new state.

"…Now that changes things."

He looked down briefly at the fallen Shadow Fang Beast. This was not part of his original path. None of this was. The system, the altered encounters, the escalating threats—everything pointed toward a different trajectory.

Which meant one thing.

The difficulty would only increase.

Cliffhanger

A new notification appeared without warning.

[Time remaining: 18:42:16]

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

[Phase 2 will begin at sunrise]

His expression shifted subtly as he read it.

Because that meant—

This night was only the beginning.
