Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 — The Choice

Ethan's gaze flicked between the approaching shadows and the three humans in the clearing. The system prompt hovered in his vision:

[Choice Path Initiated][Protect — Unknown Reward] [Abandon — Efficiency Bonus]

He exhaled slowly, his instincts—now sharpened by Combat Prediction—analyzing every micro-movement in the forest. The threat was no longer singular. Multiple low-level predators were closing in, fast, coordinated, and relentless. Each moment wasted would increase the chance of casualties.

"Decisions," Ethan muttered under his breath. "Not just for me anymore."

The first predator leapt from the treeline—a Shadow Wolf, faster than he remembered from before. He could predict the strike before it even began. A slight flick of his wrist and the wolf crashed to the ground, disoriented but not dead.

The other two wolves hesitated for a fraction of a second. That fraction was all Ethan needed. He moved between the humans and the nearest predator, spreading his presence like a shield without speaking.

"Follow me! Now!" he ordered, his voice cutting through the forest's tension.

The humans reacted instinctively. Their movements were clumsy, uncoordinated, but they obeyed. Ethan led them toward the uneven terrain he had prepared earlier, counting steps, angles, and timing in his head.

[Protect Path Confirmed]

The system blinked, acknowledging his choice. Reward? Unknown. But Ethan didn't have time to wonder. The forest was alive with threats.

A second wave of movement came from the shadows—two more wolves, their focus now entirely on Ethan and the humans. He analyzed their momentum, the slight imbalance in their steps, and the gaps between their attacks.

"Split!" he commanded, positioning himself between the injured human and the others. "One stays behind with me. The rest flank left!"

The humans hesitated—fear flashed in their eyes—but the subtle weight in Ethan's stance convinced them. They obeyed.

The fight began.

Ethan moved fluidly, each strike precise, each evasion calculated. He didn't waste energy on killing blows unless necessary. His goal was disruption, control, and survival. Every hit forced the predators slightly off-balance, buying his group time.

The injured human stumbled, caught by panic. Ethan pivoted, extending a hand to steady him, then shoved him behind a tree just as a wolf lunged. The impact struck the trunk with a thud, redirecting the attack.

Another strike, another redirection. Ethan's body moved almost on its own—Combat Prediction anticipating multiple steps ahead. The wolves were fast, but predictable once their patterns were read.

"Keep moving!" Ethan barked. "Follow my rhythm, not your fear!"

By the time the group reached the rocky, root-clustered area, two wolves lay disoriented. The humans gasped, their fear mixed with awe. Ethan didn't respond. His eyes scanned the forest, alert for the next threat.

From the treeline, a low growl resonated—deeper than the wolves. Elite-class, the system reminded him silently. Ethan's jaw tightened. His skill allowed prediction, but this was something he couldn't anticipate with confidence.

The injured human froze. One of the others whispered, "It's… it's huge."

Ethan stepped forward, shielding them without hesitation. His eyes narrowed, reading the faint movements in the shadows. Combat Prediction wasn't just about anticipating physical strikes—it extended to environmental threats, weight shifts, subtle sounds, and intent.

The creature appeared: larger than the Shadow Fang Beast, moving with deliberate power, and radiating a control over the forest that silenced even the wind. Its eyes glowed faintly as it fixed on Ethan.

Ethan's hand flexed instinctively. The humans behind him took cautious steps, but he didn't allow them to falter.

[Elite-class entity detected — Phase 2 Threat Confirmed]

It lunged—not yet attacking the humans, but testing. The ground shook slightly under its weight. Ethan moved first, positioning himself to intercept, and then the system flickered:

[Dynamic Interaction — Bonus Reward Potential]

He glanced at the humans—scared, unarmed, yet present. Protecting them would slow him, create openings, risk his own life. Abandoning them would maximize efficiency, eliminate minor distractions, and conserve energy for the elite predator.

Ethan's eyes hardened. The decision wasn't moral—it was tactical.

He shifted stance, calculating the creature's trajectory, the humans' movement, and the safest point of engagement. His mind processed dozens of potential outcomes in seconds. Then he acted.

"Stay behind me. Move only when I signal!"

The humans obeyed, fear palpable but controlled. Ethan's body became a pivot point, a shield and weapon simultaneously. The creature's strike came—massive, precise, faster than he anticipated—but he anticipated its intent. He pivoted, sidestepped, and redirected its force into the uneven ground, buying a fraction of a second. That fraction was enough.

A calculated strike to its joint—just enough to disrupt without overcommitting. The elite-class entity staggered, its weight shifting dangerously. Ethan's perception told him exactly where the next opening would form.

He moved.

The humans followed his lead, each step choreographed to minimize risk. Ethan was no longer just surviving. He was orchestrating—a single operator managing multiple variables in real time.

The system interface blinked again:

[Protect Path Bonus Activated][Unknown Reward Incoming]

Ethan exhaled through his nose, his focus unbroken. Phase 2 had begun. And now… the forest itself had become the battlefield.
