He fused it the next morning in the clearing.
The walk in had been quiet, the outer ring's patrol territories reading through Thermal Sovereignty as a complete thermal map rather than a series of signatures, each creature's biological state visible in detail that the previous grade had not produced. He moved through it without engaging anything, not because the outer ring presented a threat but because the morning had a specific purpose and he did not want VP expenditure or fight recovery affecting the fusion window.
She stayed at the clearing edge the way she had stayed during the Heat Control withdrawal. Same position, same quality of attention, the amber eyes tracking him without the restlessness of something that did not know what was happening.
He pulled up the eligible assets list and took his time with it.
The Ashen Core was the primary input. 847 trillion VP return value after four days on an unreadable rate, the bar still doing its variant of the breathing wave that the egg had used and that he had not seen on any other investment. Alongside it he selected the Null Ash at Mythical grade with three days of 500,000 VP compounding behind it, the three Ashen Plate Fragments at Legendary grade each carrying 200,000 VP invested since the Regent kill, and two skill investments he had run the calculation on twice before deciding.
Deflection Current at 84 trillion return value. Slipstream at 47 trillion.
Both had been running since before the Regent. Both would rebuild. The combined return value they contributed to the fusion input made the alternative, leaving them out and accepting a smaller total, obviously wrong given what the Fusion Insight had already shown him about how input scale affected the roll ceiling.
He selected all of them and read the combined input line.
[Combined fusion value: 1,847,340,000,000,000 VP]
[All selected assets will be consumed on fusion. No VP returned.]
[Fusion Insight: active from prior use — grade fixed at Unmarked regardless of roll.]
[Note: Roll ceiling behaviour at this input scale is uncharted. System monitoring.] [Proceed to fusion roll?]
He confirmed.
The roll appeared in the centre of the panel the way it always did. It began decelerating through the upper range the way it always did.
It did not stop at 100.
He watched it pass 100 without stopping and felt something he did not have a precise name for, the sensation of a framework he had built his understanding around encountering a boundary it had assumed was fixed and discovering it was not. The number continued decelerating, moving through the 200s, slowing further through the 300s and landing.
He looked at it for a moment.
[Fusion roll: 341]
[Post-multiplier value: 631,141,140,000,000,000,000 VP]
[Calculating result...]
[Fusion complete.]
[Magic Core — Ashen Sovereign]
[Grade: Unmarked — Tier ???]
[Note: Prior core properties are not replaced. The Ashen Sovereign installs as a secondary core alongside the Voidforge Absolute. Dual-core installation confirmed viable. System has no prior record of dual Unmarked core installation at any tier.]
[Stat bonuses on installation:]
[All stats: +800%. Stacks additively with existing core bonuses.]
[Void penetration: +200%. Stacks with existing void penetration.]
[Ash Resonance: All skill outputs carry an ash attribute that interacts with void attribute to produce a combined ash-void layer. Ash-void penetration exceeds either attribute alone by a factor determined by the ratio of installed cores.]
[Effects:]
[Null Field: Passively generates a 50-metre thermal null field around the user. Field absorbs incoming thermal damage and converts it to Void Pool charge at a rate of 1 charge per 1,000 thermal damage absorbed. Does not affect the user's own thermal skills or the Sovereign-grade reference point.]
[Ash Mantle: At the cost of 20 mana per second, coat the body in compacted ash armour. Damage resistance: +600%. While active, physical strikes from the user carry an ash detonation charge that releases on contact with a target for additional area damage.]
[Abilities:]
[1. Sovereign Ash: Release the Null Field's absorbed thermal energy as a directed wave. All thermal energy absorbed since the last release discharges outward simultaneously. Damage scales with total absorbed. Cooldown: 10 minutes.]
[2. Core Resonance: The Voidforge Absolute and Ashen Sovereign resonate simultaneously for 20 seconds. All stat bonuses from both cores double. All active output multipliers stack multiplicatively rather than additively for duration. Cooldown: 2 hours.]
[3. ??? — Awakens at 40% core refinement.]
[4. ??? — Awakens at 80% core refinement.]
[Note: Dual Unmarked core installation creates a combined framework the system cannot fully model at the user's current tier. Additional properties may emerge as tier advances. Current combined property interactions are partially uncharted.]
He read through it twice at the pace of someone taking inventory rather than reacting.
Dual installation. The Ashen Sovereign did not replace the Voidforge Absolute. It sat alongside it, the two cores operating simultaneously, their properties stacking in ways the system explicitly flagged as partially uncharted. The 800% stat bonus from the Ashen Sovereign stacking additively with the 300% from the Voidforge Absolute meant his base stats were receiving an eleven-fold multiplier before any skill or affinity output was considered.
The Null Field was the detail he kept returning to. A passive 50-metre thermal null zone around him that absorbed incoming thermal damage and converted it to Void Pool charge. The Ashen Regent had operated through a thermal null zone as its primary mechanic. He now generated one passively. The interaction between his Sovereign-grade Heat Control, which made him the thermal reference point for the environment, and a passive null field that absorbed all incoming thermal energy was something the system had not flagged explicitly but which he could reason through clearly enough. He was simultaneously the source of the thermal reference and a sink for incoming thermal deviation from that reference.
He installed it.
The installation was outward rather than inward. Where the Voidforge Absolute had restructured him internally, the Ashen Sovereign expanded outward, the stat bonuses pressing against the zone's air, his thermal signature briefly expanding to a radius that the Null Field immediately began absorbing back to ambient. The two processes reached equilibrium in approximately four seconds and then the body settled into the new configuration the way it had settled after every previous installation.
He checked the combined stat screen.

He looked at the numbers for a moment without particular reaction. They were numbers. They would produce results in situations that required results. The sixth zone's outer ring was not going to be one of those situations anymore and the interior probably was not either, which meant the practical reference frame for what these numbers meant was the fixed thermal signature in the interior and whatever sat beyond it and the warp point somewhere in the island chain above the void.
He closed the stat screen.
She was watching him from the clearing edge with the amber eyes and the quality of attention that he had spent thirty-one days learning to distinguish from generic alertness. This was the focused version, the one she produced when something had happened that she was assigning significance to.
He met her eyes briefly and then looked at the panel.
He rebuilt Deflection Current and Slipstream as fresh investments, 1,000 VP each to start the compounding cycle, and allocated the remaining balance across the bonded entity entry and the Null Ash stub that was now consumed. The VP balance after all reinvestment sat at a number he checked once and did not look at again because looking at it repeatedly was not a useful activity.
[VP balance: 4,847,110,000]
The combined compounding rates from his remaining investments were generating enough per hour that the balance would recover to a meaningful level before midday without any farming input. The sixth zone's outer ring would add to that. The interior would add more. He did not need to calculate it precisely.
He turned east toward the fixed thermal signature.
She fell into step beside him without being asked, which was the only way she ever did anything.
The interior of the sixth zone looked different through Thermal Sovereignty at 200-metre range than it had looked through any previous version of the skill. Not because the zone had changed but because the resolution of the map had. Each creature's thermal profile was complete, the internal temperature distribution of every biological system within 200 metres visible as a layered read rather than a surface signature, and the Null Field's passive absorption meant that anything producing thermal output within 50 metres of him was sending that output directly into his Void Pool rather than into the environment.
By the time he reached the location of the fixed thermal signature the Void Pool had climbed from 12 to 184 purely from ambient absorption during the walk.
He stopped in front of the tree.
The stone was exactly where Thermal Sovereignty had shown it. Sitting in the fork, warm, deliberate, the same structured heat output that the Regent's eyes had carried. He took it out and invested 1,000 VP.
[New asset detected: Waystone — Tier unknown]
[Classification: Navigation marker — higher realm origin]
[World value: Exceptional]
[Note: Waystone marks a fixed spatial coordinate. Coordinate points to a location outside the standard zone network. Further information requires interaction at Tier 3 or above.]
Higher realm origin. He turned it over in his hand and looked at the construction of it, the stone not naturally occurring in any geological category he had encountered in Erasval. He pocketed it.
She made a sound then. Short, sharp, with a directional quality he had not heard from her before, her gaze moving from the tree to him and back twice. He followed the direction she indicated and pushed Pressure Sense active against the tree's surface.
The bark moved. A small section at head height, a deliberate shift exposing a cavity that Pressure Sense read as artificially created rather than naturally formed. He reached in and found a second stone, identical in construction to the first but running at a consistently lower temperature, the inverse of the same deliberate output.
He looked at her.
She made a new sound, shorter and harder than the directional one, with a quality that landed differently in his processing from anything she had produced before.
He invested 1,000 VP into the second stone.
[New asset detected: Waystone — Tier unknown]
[Classification: Navigation marker — higher realm origin]
[Note: This Waystone and its paired counterpart encode a two-point spatial coordinate. Both points required for spatial transit activation. Transit requires cultivator at Tier 3 or above to initiate.]
He held both stones and looked at the tree and thought about who had placed them here and when and whether the Tier 6 cultivator who had come asking about method not identity had known they were here or had been looking for them.
He pocketed both and turned back toward Irongate.
