He went deep into the sixth zone.
Not the outer ring. Past the territory he had mapped across eighteen days of Regent preparation, past the resource corridors he had worked until the Compound Sense passive could navigate them without his conscious direction, into the interior sections he had scouted briefly and filed for later. Later was now.
He found a clearing wide enough and clear enough that what was about to happen would not interact with anything he could not afford to lose. She sat at the edge of it, the amber eyes on him, and he pulled up the withdrawal prompt.
[Withdraw investment from: Heat Control (SSS) — Proficiency 7]
[Current return value: 512,847,340,000,000 VP]
[Investment VP: consumed on withdrawal. No VP returned.]
[Upgrade threshold analysis:]
[SSS to Sovereign-grade (Skill): 50,000,000,000,000 VP — exceeded]
[Sovereign-grade to Eternal-grade (Skill): 500,000,000,000,000,000 VP — not met]
[Maximum achievable grade: Sovereign-grade]
[Projected grade: Sovereign-grade]
[Power increase: exceptional — surplus of 462,847,340,000,000 VP above threshold contributes to power enhancement within grade]
[Proficiency increase: +2 (new proficiency: 9)]
[Sub-skill of Fire Affinity (SS) — resonance multiplier update pending]
[Note: Sovereign-grade sub-skill of SS affinity. Resonance interaction produces uncharted output. System has insufficient data to model result. Proceeding.]
[Confirm withdrawal?]
He read the note twice. Uncharted. The same word the system had used at the SSS Heat Control withdrawal outside Valresh. The same format, the same placement in the prompt, the same quality of a system reporting accurately that it did not know what was coming.
He confirmed it.
The SSS withdrawal outside Valresh had been an expansion, his awareness of thermal energy extending outward in every direction simultaneously. The Sovereign withdrawal was not an expansion.
It was a dissolution.
The boundary between his awareness of thermal energy and thermal energy itself became unclear in a way that had no prior reference point in anything he had experienced in Erasval or his previous life. Not that he became hot. Not that he lost control of the output. The boundary simply was not there in the same way it had been, the conceptual line between him and the thing he had been wielding becoming a question rather than a fact, and for approximately forty seconds he sat with that question while the withdrawal completed.
She pressed her full weight against his left leg.
He felt it through the forty seconds. She did not move. She did not make a sound. She simply pressed her weight against him with the quality of something that had made a deliberate decision about what was needed and was providing it without being asked.
The forty seconds ended.
The boundary returned. Different from before, not the clean line it had been but a permeable one, the distinction between his awareness and the thermal register of the environment around him now something he could adjust rather than something fixed. Heat Control had not just upgraded in grade. It had changed what it was. Where SSS had been a skill he used, Sovereign-grade was something closer to a property he inhabited.
[Heat Control — Sovereign-grade (Skill) — Proficiency 9]
[Absolute thermal sovereignty. At Sovereign-grade, the user does not manipulate thermal energy. The user is the reference point from which thermal energy in the environment is measured. Zone Control operates at the level of the thermal state of the environment rather than its temperature. Range at proficiency 9: 200 metres. Precision: absolute.]
[Sub-skill of Fire Affinity (SS) — resonance multiplier: 3.8]
[Note: Sovereign-grade sub-skill. Resonance pressure on Fire Affinity (SS) ceiling: critical. Affinity grade elevation: imminent. System has no data on Sovereign-grade sub-skill resonance behaviour. Monitoring.]
[Sub-skills available:]
[Proficiency 9: Thermal Sovereignty — active]
[Proficiency 10: ??? — locked]
He read the resonance multiplier. 3.8. The Fire Affinity had elevated from S to SS from the previous SSS sub-skill pressure. It was sitting at SS now and the system was already calling the ceiling critical from the Sovereign-grade pressure.
He looked at the Fire Affinity entry.
[Elemental Affinity: Fire (SS)]
[Resonance pressure from sub-skills: critical]
[Grade elevation status: pending threshold]
He invested 10,000,000,000 VP into Heat Control before the panel had finished updating and watched the bar appear, wider than anything he had put VP into before, the Sovereign-grade pulling compounding capacity from the system at a scale that made the previous investment bars look like the Ignition entry from week one.
[VP balance: 47,847,110,000]
Then the Fire Affinity entry updated without him touching it.
[Elemental Affinity: Fire (SS) — Grade elevated.]
[Elemental Affinity: Fire (SSS)]
[Note: Affinity grade elevation driven by Sovereign-grade sub-skill resonance pressure. Resonance multiplier recalculated across all Fire sub-skills.]
[New resonance multiplier: 4.6]
He sat still for a moment.
4.6 across every Fire sub-skill simultaneously. Combustion SSS at proficiency 9 was already the most potent single attack he had ever produced. At 4.6 resonance multiplier it was something he did not have a practical reference point for because nothing he had fought would have survived long enough to give him the data.
He looked at her.
She had pulled her weight back from his leg when the forty seconds ended and was sitting at the clearing's edge in the same position she had been in before the withdrawal, watching him with the amber eyes. The deliberate contact during the forty seconds had not been acknowledged by either of them. He was not going to acknowledge it now. But he filed it in the same place he filed everything that mattered.
He reinvested into Combustion, Thermal Lance, Char Field and Cinder Burst in sequence, the VP balance dropping through the investments but remaining in a range that the combined compounding rates would recover within hours.
Then he tested Thermal Sovereignty.
Not at full output. He extended the Sovereign-grade Zone Control outward to its stated 200-metre range and set the thermal reference point of the clearing to ambient and held it there without active direction, the skill running as a passive state rather than an active command.
The outer ring creatures whose patrol territories overlapped the 200-metre radius stopped moving.
Not frozen. Not dead. They simply stopped, their thermal regulation encountering a reference point that was not the environment's natural state and requiring recalibration before they could act, the biological process of thermal self-regulation encountering a fixed external reference and hanging on it the way a compass hangs when placed next to a magnet.
He released the reference point.
They moved again, the pause ending without apparent awareness on their part that it had occurred.
He looked at the clearing and thought about what Thermal Sovereignty applied to the Ashen Regent's null zone mechanic would have produced, given that the Regent's mechanism operated by absorbing ambient thermal energy and the Sovereign-grade skill made him the reference point for what ambient thermal energy was.
Then he thought about the fact that the Regent was already dead and he was standing in a clearing at level 88 with a Fire affinity at SSS-grade and a Sovereign-grade sub-skill with a 4.6 resonance multiplier and 47 trillion VP in his balance and an Ashen Core with an unreadable compounding rate that had been running for three days.
He checked the Ashen Core.
[Void-Touched Ash Core — Invested: 15,001,000 VP — Return value: 847,340,000,000,000 VP] [Current rate: ???]
847 trillion. Three days.
He looked at that number and then at her and then at the clearing where the patrol creatures had stopped moving and started again and were now continuing their routes with no apparent record of the interruption.
He pulled up the Fusion Insight consumable he had been holding since Irongate and selected the Ashen Core as the primary fusion input.
He was not fusing today. He wanted to know what the projected grade range was before he decided when to fuse.
[Fusion Insight active.]
[Primary input: Void-Touched Ash Core — Return value: 847,340,000,000,000 VP]
[Additional eligible assets: all currently invested assets]
[Projected grade range with primary input alone: Unmarked]
[Projected grade range ceiling with additional inputs: system cannot calculate — input scale exceeds projection framework]
[Roll required for Unmarked: any]
[Note: At current input scale the roll determines power enhancement within Unmarked grade rather than grade outcome. Grade is fixed at Unmarked regardless of roll. Roll ceiling of 100 may not represent the actual ceiling at this input scale. System monitoring.]
He read the note at the bottom.
The roll ceiling of 100 may not represent the actual ceiling at this input scale.
He closed the Fusion Insight result and looked at the clearing.
She had moved from the edge to a position three metres to his left while he was reading, the shift in position unprompted, and she was looking east in the direction of the deeper zone interior with the particular quality of attention that he had learned to read as information rather than behaviour.
He looked east.
Thermal Mapping at Sovereign-grade with a 200-metre range showed him the interior in more detail than it had ever shown him anything, each creature's thermal state visible not as a signature but as a complete thermal profile, their internal temperature distribution, their metabolic rate, the particular heat pattern of active versus dormant biological systems. The interior mapped itself in a resolution that the SSS-grade version had not produced and would not have produced regardless of proficiency.
And at the edge of the 200-metre range, sitting in a location he had passed within 60 metres of during the Regent preparation without the skill producing anything useful at that distance, a thermal signature that was not a creature and was not a resource deposit and was not anything the standard zone mapping had flagged.
A fixed point. Warm. Deliberately warm in the specific way that the Regent's eyes had been warm, the warmth of something that was producing heat intentionally rather than as a byproduct of biological function.
He looked at her.
She was still looking east.
"You knew it was there," he said.
She did not respond in any way that confirmed or denied it.
He looked at the fixed point in the thermal map and thought about what sat at the end of a deliberately maintained heat signature in the interior of the sixth zone of a region that a Tier 6 cultivator had passed through two weeks ago asking about method rather than identity.
He looked at his VP balance.
[VP balance: 31,847,110,000]
He invested 5,000,000,000 VP into the Ashen Core and closed the panel.
Tomorrow. The Ashen Core needed another day at minimum before the fusion input would be where he wanted it. The fixed thermal signature had been there for at least as long as his Sovereign-grade range could now see and would still be there tomorrow.
He looked at her.
She turned from east to him and made the low resonant sound, the first one, the one from inside the egg.
He turned back toward Irongate.
She fell into step beside him and they walked back through the outer ring as the afternoon light changed and the patrol creatures continued their routes and the thermal map of the zone shifted around them in the 200-metre radius that moved with him wherever he went, a sphere of absolute thermal reference centred on a level 88 Ranked-tier cultivator and his unclassifiable companion walking through the sixth zone of a regional territory on the forty-second day of his existence in Erasval.
