Chapter 12 - CHAPTER 12: THE NINE-TAILS MASK AND THE MYSTERIOUS KIN

The hairy spiderlings, each the size of a wicker basket, suddenly dropped from the bunker's ceiling. One unhinged its maw, dripping with neon-green slime and bristling with fangs, lunging straight for the throat of a dazed recruit who hadn't even realized the danger.

FLASH!

A brilliant streak of light bisected the air. Before the beast could touch the recruit's skin, it was sliced perfectly in half vertically. Green blood sprayed across the young soldier's face, leaving him frozen in terror. The Squad Leader—the burly veteran—tightened his grip on his glowing pulse blade, his gaze as cold as arctic ice.

"Get to your positions! This is a battlefield, not a stroll in the park!" the Leader roared, his voice overpowering the collective hissing of the monsters. "Rookies, keep your eyes open! Five-man cells, U-shaped formation, overlapping fire support! NOW!"

The veterans' expertise kicked in instantly. They established a ring of steel, their pulse rifles firing in a rhythmic cadence, creating a dense lattice of energy that pushed back the black wave of ravenous spiderlings.

Meanwhile, on the outer perimeter, the situation was far more dire.

The V.G.U. forces there were breaking under the sheer weight of numbers. Reika's squad was pinned down, surrounded by thousands of eight-legged nightmares. The sound of gunfire grew faint, swallowed by the sickening screeches of the swarm.

"I have no choice but to use that..." Reika gritted her teeth, her sharp eyes flashing with lethal resolve. She flipped open a small metallic case at her hip. Inside lay a half-mask, designed with the motif of an ancient fox, radiating an eerie, bio-luminescent violet-red glow.

"Legendary Bio-Weapon: No.6 - Kyuubi!"

Reika slammed the mask onto her face.

BOOM!

A pillar of deep crimson energy exploded around her, blasting away the lunging spiders. On the squad leader's radar, the numbers began to skip frantically: "Warning! Candidate Reika's Neural Sync is skyrocketing! 5.0... 6.0... It's hitting 7.4!!"

From behind Reika, a massive energy tail ignited, burning brilliantly like hellfire. Her hands were encased in razor-sharp alloy claws. With god-like speed, Reika launched forward like a streak of red lightning, leaving blurred afterimages in her wake. She swung her claws, shredding dozens of Kaiju spiders in the blink of an eye, turning the battlefield into a literal slaughterhouse.

Skidding to a halt amidst a mountain of monster corpses, Reika exhaled a sharp breath. She glanced toward the smoke-filled Jūki District in the distance, muttering, "I wonder if that weakling uncle Arata is even surviving the night..."

Back in the Jūki District, Arata was still playing his part perfectly. Standing in his five-man cell, he fired his rifle in steady bursts, presenting himself as a recruit with decent reflexes but nothing extraordinary.

Suddenly, the "second heartbeat" in Arata's chest skipped. It slammed against his ribs like a war drum, forcing him to double over, clutching his chest in sudden agony. His dark pupils constricted into sharp vertical slits, exactly like a predator's.

"This nauseating sensation..." Arata thought, cold sweat pouring down his face. "It's not the spiderlings, nor the one in the sky. There's another entity... something far more malevolent and powerful lurking nearby!"

Seeing his teammates occupied with the frenetic fire-fight, Arata slipped into the shadows. He faded into the darkness of a narrow alley, officially breaking away from the squad.

Once he was out of sight, Arata shed his weak persona. He moved across the rooftops of the factories with predatory agility, tracking a strange aura that was triggering his monster instincts. In a dim, three-way alleyway, he spotted a figure in a black cloak walking calmly.

Arata leaped down, tailing the figure into a dead-end alley surrounded by moss-covered brick walls. The figure stopped abruptly, back turned toward him.

"Who are you?" Arata took a defensive stance, growling deep in his throat. "Why do you reek of that foul Kaiju stench?"

The figure didn't answer, nor did it turn around. Suddenly... CRACK... SNAP... CRUNCH...

The sickening sound of neck bones twisting and snapping echoed through the silence. The figure's head rotated slowly, a full 360 degrees to the rear to look directly at Arata, while the body remained perfectly still. It was a face as pale as a corpse, with obsidian eyes devoid of any white, and a grin that tore open almost to the ears.

"Khik khik khik..." The voice was raspy, echoing as if two people were speaking at once. "You wonder about our scent? Because... you are of our KIND, too."

The creature slowly rotated the rest of its limp body. He tilted his broken-looking head, his grin widening to a grotesque degree:

"You should have... died in that disaster sixteen years ago... Kage."

Arata froze, his heart seemingly stopping in his chest. That name...

"What the hell are you talking about? Who is Kage? Are you a Kaiju mimicking a human?!"

In the moment Arata was distracted by that unfamiliar yet haunting name, the mysterious entity merely flicked its finger.

THWIP!!!

A pitch-black biological needle, razor-sharp, tore through the air at a speed the human eye couldn't follow. Caught off guard, Arata failed to dodge. The needle pierced through his left shoulder, the impact so violent it slammed him backward and pinned him to the concrete wall.

Fresh red blood erupted, soaking his military uniform. The monster standing in the shadows unleashed a savage peal of laughter that echoed through the dead-end: "Khik khik khik..."
