Chapter 13 - The Other side of You

Zeke didn't say anything for a while.

He just stood there, staring at the shadow, letting the words sink in.

Stops existing.

It didn't feel real.

It felt like something you say in theory—not something that could actually happen to you.

"That's not how this works," he said finally.

The shadow didn't react.

"It is now."

Zeke let out a breath, running a hand through his hair.

"So the loop just… replaces me? Like I'm some broken part?"

"If you become unstable enough," the shadow said, "yes."

Aria stepped closer to him.

"You're not a part," she said firmly. "You're the one holding everything together."

"That's exactly the problem," Zeke muttered.

He looked down at his wrist.

The mark had shifted again.

The crack running through it was deeper now, like something inside it was slowly splitting apart.

"If I break," he said quietly, "everything else follows."

The shadow didn't deny it.

Zeke let out a short laugh.

"Great."

Aria watched him carefully.

"You're not thinking of giving up, are you?"

He looked at her.

"No."

A pause.

"But I am thinking we need to understand what that version of me wants."

The air grew still again.

Like the world was listening.

Almost on cue—

The chamber flickered.

Zeke tensed.

Not again.

But it wasn't like before.

This time, the shift was slower.

He could feel it happening.

Like being pulled sideways.

And then—

He was standing in his apartment.

Not a vision.

Not a flash.

Real.

The air smelled different.

Warmer.

Familiar.

Zeke looked around quickly.

His room.

His desk.

The window.

Everything exactly where it should be.

Except—

He wasn't alone.

The other version of him stood near the door.

Clear now.

No distortion.

No blur.

Just… him.

Same face.

Same eyes.

But something about him felt heavier.

Colder.

"You finally made it across," the other Zeke said.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Zeke didn't move closer.

"Yeah," he said. "Guess I did."

They stood there, facing each other.

Same posture.

Same height.

But not the same person.

"You're causing problems," the other Zeke said.

Zeke raised an eyebrow. "I could say the same thing."

The other Zeke smiled slightly.

"Difference is, I'm fixing them."

Zeke's chest tightened.

"By replacing me?"

"If necessary."

That word again.

Zeke shook his head.

"You really think that's how this ends?"

"I know it is."

The certainty in his voice was worse than anything else.

Zeke crossed his arms slightly.

"Then explain something," he said. "If you're me, why don't I remember making your choices?"

The other Zeke's expression didn't change.

"Because you chose wrong."

Silence.

Zeke felt something twist in his chest.

"And you didn't?" he asked.

"No."

The answer came too easily.

Too clean.

Zeke took a step forward.

"Then what did you do differently?"

The other Zeke's gaze didn't waver.

"I didn't hesitate."

A chill ran through him.

Zeke already knew what that meant.

"You let her die," he said quietly.

The other Zeke tilted his head slightly.

"I didn't try to stop what was inevitable."

"That's not the same thing."

"It is," he said. "You just don't want it to be."

Zeke clenched his jaw.

"And where did that get you?"

The other Zeke's smile faded.

"For a while?" he said. "Stability."

Zeke didn't like that answer.

"For a while?"

The other Zeke didn't respond immediately.

Which said enough.

Zeke exhaled slowly.

"So it didn't last."

"No," he admitted.

"Then why are you here?"

The other Zeke looked at him directly.

"Because your version of the loop is collapsing faster."

Zeke frowned. "So you're trying to fix it."

"Yes."

"By becoming me."

"By replacing the unstable variable."

Zeke let out a quiet laugh.

"That's one way to say it."

The room flickered slightly.

Zeke felt it again.

The pull.

The connection between worlds tightening.

"You don't have much time," the other Zeke said.

"For what?"

"To decide."

Zeke's eyes narrowed.

"Decide what?"

The other Zeke stepped closer.

"Whether you're going to keep breaking everything…"

A pause.

"…or let someone else hold it together."

Zeke didn't step back.

"Yeah," he said quietly.

"That's not happening."

The other Zeke studied him for a moment.

Then smiled again.

"Then we'll see which one of us the loop chooses."

The world snapped.

Zeke stumbled back into the chamber.

Aria caught him instantly.

"What happened?"

Zeke took a breath.

"I met him."

Her expression tightened.

"And?"

Zeke looked down at his wrist.

The crack in the mark had spread further.

"He's not trying to kill me," he said.

Aria's voice was quiet.

"Then what?"

Zeke looked up.

"He's trying to replace me."
