Chapter 16 - When The World Chooses

For a second, no one moved.

The words hung in the air—heavy, final.

To see which one of us stays.

Zeke felt the mark on his wrist burn, sharper than before. Not just pain this time—pressure. Like something was trying to push through his skin.

Across from him, the other Zeke stood just as still.

But his expression had changed.

Less calm.

More focused.

Like he could feel it too.

Aria stepped closer to Zeke, her voice low. "What does that mean?"

Zeke didn't take his eyes off the other version of himself.

"It means the loop is done waiting."

The ground trembled again.

Not violently.

But steadily.

Like a heartbeat.

The shadow moved along the edges of the chamber, stretching thinner, less solid than before.

"This is the convergence point," it said.

Zeke frowned. "You sound worried."

"I am observing," it replied.

"Yeah," Zeke muttered. "That's not comforting."

The other Zeke took another step forward.

"This is where it stabilizes," he said.

Zeke let out a quiet breath. "Or breaks."

"That depends on you."

Zeke shook his head. "Funny. I was about to say the same thing."

The air between them warped slightly.

Not enough to distort—but enough to feel wrong.

Like standing too close to something powerful.

Aria tightened her grip on Zeke's arm.

"I don't like this," she said.

"Stay behind me," he replied.

"I'm not leaving you."

"I didn't ask you to leave."

Their voices softened for a moment.

Then—

The mark flared again.

Both of them.

Zeke looked down.

The crack in his mark had spread almost to the edge.

Across from him—

The other Zeke's mark glowed steady.

Unbroken.

That difference didn't feel small.

"You see it," the other Zeke said.

Zeke nodded once.

"Yeah."

"You're falling apart."

Zeke looked back up.

"And you're not."

"No."

Silence stretched.

Then Zeke took a step forward.

"Then let's stop talking."

The other Zeke didn't hesitate.

They moved at the same time.

Zeke swung first—not wild, not reckless. Controlled.

The other Zeke blocked it easily.

Of course he did.

Same instincts.

Same timing.

They broke apart instantly.

Circling.

Watching.

"You fight like me," the other Zeke said.

Zeke smirked faintly. "That's because you fight like me."

They clashed again.

Faster this time.

Zeke felt it immediately—this wasn't like fighting someone else.

There was no surprise.

Every move felt familiar.

Too familiar.

He knew what was coming—

But so did the other Zeke.

They locked arms for a moment, strength against strength.

Zeke leaned in slightly.

"You really think you're better?"

The other Zeke didn't even hesitate.

"I think I'm necessary."

Zeke shoved him back.

"That's not the same thing."

"It is when everything depends on it."

They moved again.

Strike. Block. Step back.

The rhythm built quickly.

Too evenly matched.

Zeke could feel it.

This wasn't about skill.

It was about something else.

The mark pulsed again.

Hard.

His vision flickered for a second—

And in that instant, the other Zeke moved.

A sharp hit to his side.

Zeke staggered back, breath catching.

"Zeke!" Aria called.

"I'm fine," he said quickly, though it didn't feel entirely true.

The other Zeke didn't press forward immediately.

He just watched.

Waiting.

"You're hesitating," he said.

Zeke straightened.

"No."

"You are."

"I'm thinking."

"That's the problem."

Zeke wiped a bit of blood from his lip, letting out a breath.

"Yeah," he said. "You've said that already."

The chamber flickered again.

This time longer.

The walls blurred—

And for a moment, they weren't in the chamber.

They were in the modern world.

Zeke saw it clearly.

His apartment.

The same space.

But different.

Colder.

Empty.

The other Zeke standing where he was now—

Alone.

Then it snapped back.

Zeke's chest tightened.

"You saw that?" Aria asked.

"Yeah."

The shadow's voice came quietly.

"That is the stabilized outcome."

Zeke looked at it sharply.

"You mean the one where he wins."

"Yes."

Zeke exhaled slowly.

Then looked back at the other version of himself.

"Yeah," he said.

"I don't like that version."

The other Zeke tilted his head slightly.

"It works."

"It's empty."

"It's stable."

Zeke shook his head.

"No," he said.

"It's just… quiet."

The other Zeke's expression didn't change.

But something in his eyes shifted.

Just a little.

Zeke stepped forward again.

"But here's the thing," he continued.

"I'm not trying to make things quiet."

The mark on his wrist burned again—

But this time, it didn't feel like it was breaking.

It felt like it was resisting.

"I'm trying to make them matter."

The chamber trembled sharply.

The shadow shifted.

The air tightened.

Something had changed.

The other Zeke felt it too.

His expression hardened.

"Then you're going to lose."

Zeke didn't stop walking.

"Maybe," he said.

Then he raised his hand again.

"But not without a fight."

The ground cracked beneath them.

The loop wasn't just watching anymore.

It was deciding.
