The night air outside the Golden Stage studio felt way cooler than Max expected, it felt like a wave from a mischievous little refrigerator.
To Max though, it felt like a breath of fresh air.
Los Angeles at night always had a unique vibe to it. The city never truly slept, it just shifted gears in tandem with the sunrise and sunset.
At night, the daytime traffic and corporate chaos gave way to neon lights from stores around, with music spilling from a barber shop and the quiet hum of people chasing dollars and dreams in a thousand different ways.
Max stepped onto the sidewalk with his hands tucked in his jacket pockets and took a slow breath.
"Damn," he said under his breath, "that shi' was wild."
Behind him, the massive studio building still buzzed with activity.
Crew members moved equipment into trucks, security guards checked credentials and show tickets, and a handful of fans waited near the entrance hoping to catch glimpses of contestants leaving the show.
Max kept his head low as he walked.
He was not famous yet, he just happened to be recognized online a bit. But with the clips circulating online, people might recognize him soon.
His phone buzzed, then buzzed again and again. Max pulled it out and saw several messages, notifications and social media tags.
He blinked. "Whoooooa, they're already tagging me!"
The Artifice System lit up again with a series of new notifications.
DING!
["Recognition surge detected!"]
["Artifice conversion active."]
Max felt that quiet pressure again in his chest like invisible energy gathering slowly in his arteries, then the number in the system interface shifted.
["Artifice Energy."]
["Total: 812."]
It was still basic rank, but again, it was still climbing.
Max slipped the phone back into his pocket with quiet satisfaction and chuckled slightly. "So this is our own gym huh?"
A gym not by lifting weights, not by fighting monsters, but by making people feel something.
"Crazy world..." he murmured with a smile.
Footsteps quickly approached behind him as Jalen caught up, slightly out of breath. "You walk too fast, mi amigo".
"LA survival skill in the tool bag, man". Max shrugged. "It's the West Coast my bruvah, ain't no sluggishness around here if you ain't looking to get jumped".
Jalen glanced back toward the studio. "You heading to the dorms?"
Max raised an eyebrow.
"Dorms?"
"You didn't know?" Again, Jalen was flabbergasted at his new friend's ignorance.
He was speechless for a few seconds before he glared at Max and continued. "The top twenty contestants stay in the Golden Stage residence building."
Max blinked. "They giving us a crib now?"
Jalen laughed. "Bruvah, this is a televised competition".
"They want drama, interactions, friendships, rivalries, and beef. Keeping everyone in the same crib makes great content for them fam".
Max shook his head slowly. "That's actually nuts, Reality TV is so freaking crazy man".
Lila stepped out of the building a moment later and joined them. "You two heading over?"
Jalen nodded. "Yeah".
Lila gestured down the street. "It's about ten minutes from here".
Max shrugged. "Ladies first, then".
They walked together through the warm California night.
Streetlights painted long shadows across the pavement as cars rolled past slowly, while music drifted from open windows. Somewhere down the block, a food truck blasted hip hop while customers lined up for late night tacos.
Max glanced around with twinkling eyes. "Damn," he said quietly. "LA really comes alive at night".
Jalen smirked. "You acting like you ain't from around here".
"I am, yunno," Max replied. "But a broke man ain't got shi' to enjoy in this city, you feel me?"
Lila chuckled softly.
That earned a curious look from Max. "You laugh?"
"Occasionally". She replied dryly.
Jalen grinned. "Mark the calendar".
A few minutes later, they reached a large modern building surrounded by sleek glass panels and bright signage.
"Golden Stage Residence". Max whistled softly. "Now that looks like a crib gotten with a lot of cash".
Security stood at the entrance, and they scanned their contestant badges before allowing them inside.
Inside, the lobby looked more like a luxury hotel than a dormitory with polished marble floors, soft ambient lighting, and huge digital screens displaying highlights from earlier performances.
Max shook his head. "They really tryna make stars outta us".
A receptionist directed them toward the elevator. "Rooms are assigned already, just scan your badge". She reminded in a polite manner.
Inside the elevator, Max leaned against the wall and the Artifice System interface lit up again.
["Artifice Energy."]
["Total: 829."]
Even while dormant and not doing anything, it was still rising slowly from online engagement.
Max tapped his chin. "You ever think about how weird this is?"
Jalen raised an eyebrow. "What part?"
"All of it," Max said. "People watching us perform, emotional reactions, and that emotion literally becoming power".
Jalen shrugged. "Well yeah, that's the kinda world we live in".
Lila added quietly. "Art has always moved people".
"Yeah". Max nodded slowly.
A few seconds later, the elevator doors opened, leading to a hallway.
The hallway looked quiet and comfortable, it was lined with modern apartment doors on both sides.
Max quickly found his room number and scanned his badge.
Click!
The door slid open.
Inside was a surprisingly spacious studio apartment. It had a bed, a desk, a small kitchen area and a small window overlooking the glowing city skyline.
Max stepped inside and laughed. "Ain't no way".
Jalen leaned in from the doorway and commented. "Nice".
Max dropped onto the bed. "This is nicer than my actual crib".
Lila crossed her arms. "You should rest".
"Yeah yeah, of course". Max stretched lazily.
Jalen pointed toward the door. "Don't forget, orientation meeting is tomorrow morning".
Max saluted lazily. "Aye captain, copy that".
Jalen chuckled, then they left and the door closed.
For the first time that day, silence filled Max's world as he sat up slowly and looked outside the window.
Outside, Los Angeles stretched endlessly beneath the night sky.
Somewhere out there, millions of people lived their lives, grinding hard, chasing success, fighting failure, trying to matter.
And somehow, he had stepped onto a path that could change everything for him and shoot him into superstardom.
The Artifice System interface appeared again.
DING!
["New message detected!"]
Max frowned.
"What now?"
The notification expanded.
["New System Feature Unlocked!"]
["Artifice Shop Available."]
Max sat upright immediately. "Oh?"
The interface opened into a layered tab, displaying several glowing options.
["Basic Vocal Training Module."]
["Cost: 300 Artifice."]
…
["Emotion Resonance Enhancement."]
["Cost: 500 Artifice."]
…
["Rhythmic Control Boost."]
["Cost: 400 Artifice."]
…
[…]
Max rubbed his hands together slowly as his lips slowly curled up in a grin. "Oh yeah, this is gonna be fun".
His eyes scanned the list.
The possibilities were endless. The options ranged from skills to training modules, to enhancements, and they were all purchasable with Artifice energy gained through recognition and performance.
Max leaned back against the headboard with a grin.
He stared at the glowing menu for a long moment, then laughed quietly. "Aiit," he said. "Let's see how far we can take this".
Outside the window, the lights of Los Angeles glittered like a sea of stars.
And somewhere in the massive city, forces far more powerful than Max could imagine were already beginning to notice him.
The game had only just begun.
