Chapter 19 - Chapter 20: The Badge That Turned Cold

The abandoned building did not welcome them.

It stood like a forgotten memory at the edge of the city—cracked walls, broken windows, and silence that felt too heavy to be natural. The wind whispered through its empty halls, carrying dust and secrets that had no intention of being uncovered.

Thabiso stepped inside first.

Every movement felt louder than it should. His shoes echoed against the concrete floor, each step a reminder that there was no turning back now.

Naledi followed close behind him.

Sergeant Mokoena came last.

But something had changed.

Thabiso felt it before he understood it.

A shift in the air.

A difference in presence.

The kind of feeling you get when someone is no longer standing with you… but watching you.

"Stay sharp," Mokoena said, his voice calm but distant.

Thabiso glanced back briefly.

There was something in Mokoena's eyes.

Not fear.

Not concern.

Something else.

Something colder.

---

They moved deeper into the building.

The plan had been simple—draw Kabelo out, make him think Thabiso was exposed, vulnerable, and ready to talk. Mokoena had insisted on minimal backup to avoid scaring the group away.

At the time, it made sense.

Now—

It didn't.

"How long before they show?" Naledi whispered.

"They're already watching," Thabiso replied quietly.

She looked at him. "You feel it too?"

He nodded.

Before she could say anything else—

A sound.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

From the shadows ahead.

Kabelo stepped into the dim light, a faint smile on his face.

"I was wondering how long it would take," he said.

Thabiso's body tensed instantly.

Naledi stood her ground.

"You're predictable," Kabelo continued. "Still trying to be the hero."

"I'm not here to play games," Thabiso said.

Kabelo chuckled. "You never were."

Two more men appeared behind him.

Not the same ones from the bridge.

New faces.

New danger.

Mokoena stepped forward slightly.

"Police," he announced. "You're surrounded."

Kabelo didn't react.

Didn't even blink.

Instead, he looked directly at Mokoena.

"Are we?" he asked calmly.

Something about the way he said it made Thabiso's stomach tighten.

Mokoena's jaw shifted.

Just slightly.

Then—

Everything fell apart.

---

"Lower your weapon."

The words didn't come from Kabelo.

They came from Mokoena.

But they weren't directed at the criminals.

They were directed at Thabiso.

For a second, no one moved.

No one spoke.

Naledi blinked in confusion. "What?"

Thabiso turned slowly.

"Mokoena… what are you doing?"

The sergeant's expression had changed completely now.

Gone was the calm authority.

In its place—

Suspicion.

Hard.

Unforgiving.

"I said lower your weapon," Mokoena repeated.

"I don't even have a weapon," Thabiso said, his voice tense.

"Exactly," Mokoena replied. "Which makes this even more interesting."

Naledi stepped forward. "This doesn't make sense."

"Stay out of this," Mokoena snapped.

She froze.

Not because she was afraid—

But because she realized something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Kabelo laughed softly.

"Oh, this just got entertaining."

Thabiso's heart was pounding now.

"Mokoena, talk to me," he said. "What's going on?"

Mokoena took a slow step closer.

"I've been investigating you," he said.

The words hit like a punch.

"Me?" Thabiso asked, disbelief in his voice.

"Yes," Mokoena said. "From the moment your name came up, things didn't add up."

Naledi shook her head. "That's ridiculous."

"Is it?" Mokoena shot back. "A young man with no resources… constantly crossing paths with a criminal network… surviving situations he shouldn't survive?"

"That's not evidence," she argued.

"No," Mokoena said. "It's a pattern."

Thabiso felt something break inside him.

"You think I'm working with them?"

"I think you're involved," Mokoena replied coldly. "Maybe not at the top. But not innocent either."

Kabelo clapped slowly.

"Wow," he said. "I couldn't have planned this better."

"Shut up," Mokoena snapped.

But Kabelo only smiled wider.

"You see it now, don't you?" Kabelo said, looking at Thabiso. "This is how the world works. Trust no one."

Thabiso ignored him.

His focus was on Mokoena.

"You're wrong," he said firmly. "Everything I've done… I've been trying to survive them."

"Or protect them," Mokoena countered.

"That's not true!"

"Then prove it!"

The words echoed through the empty building.

For a moment, there was only silence.

Then—

Movement.

---

One of Kabelo's men stepped forward suddenly, pulling out a weapon.

Naledi gasped.

Thabiso reacted instantly, pushing her back as the man raised the gun.

"Enough talking," the man growled.

But before he could act—

Another gunshot rang out.

The man dropped.

Everyone turned.

Mokoena stood there, his gun raised, smoke rising from the barrel.

The room froze.

Kabelo's smile disappeared.

For the first time—

He looked surprised.

"You just killed your own leverage," Kabelo said slowly.

Mokoena didn't lower his weapon.

"He made a move," he said. "I responded."

But his eyes—

They weren't on Kabelo.

They were still on Thabiso.

Watching.

Measuring.

Judging.

Thabiso felt the weight of that gaze.

"You still don't trust me," he said quietly.

"No," Mokoena replied.

Naledi stepped in front of Thabiso.

"That's enough," she said. "You're letting your suspicion blind you."

"Or maybe I'm the only one seeing clearly," Mokoena shot back.

Kabelo laughed again, shaking his head.

"This is beautiful," he said. "You're tearing yourselves apart without me even trying."

"Shut up!" Naledi snapped.

Kabelo's eyes flicked to her.

"You're brave," he said. "But bravery doesn't stop bullets."

Thabiso stepped forward.

"This ends now," he said.

Kabelo tilted his head. "You think you're in control?"

"No," Thabiso said. "But I'm done being controlled."

Mokoena's grip tightened on his gun.

"Careful," he warned. "Every move you make matters."

Thabiso didn't look at him.

Because he understood now.

Mokoena wasn't just investigating him.

He was waiting.

Waiting for one mistake.

One wrong move.

One reason to pull the trigger.

---

The tension in the room became unbearable.

Three sides.

Three different intentions.

No trust.

No safety.

Only choices.

And consequences.

Naledi whispered, "Thabiso… think."

He nodded slightly.

He was thinking.

Faster than ever before.

Every possibility.

Every risk.

Every outcome.

And then—

He saw it.

A way forward.

Not safe.

But possible.

He took a slow step forward.

Hands visible.

Calm.

Deliberate.

"I'm not your enemy," he said, his voice steady.

Mokoena didn't respond.

Kabelo watched with interest.

"I never was," Thabiso continued. "But if you keep treating me like one… you're going to lose the real fight."

Mokoena's eyes narrowed.

"And what fight is that?"

Thabiso glanced briefly at Kabelo.

"Stopping them."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Then Kabelo spoke.

"You really believe that?" he asked.

Thabiso looked at him.

"Yes."

Kabelo studied him for a moment.

Then smiled again.

But this time—

It was different.

Not mocking.

Not amused.

Respect.

Just a little.

"Maybe you're not as weak as I thought," Kabelo said.

Mokoena lowered his gun slightly.

Not fully.

But enough.

The shift was small.

But real.

"Then prove it," Mokoena said.

Thabiso nodded.

"I will."

The storm hadn't ended.

Not even close.

But something had changed.

Lines had been drawn.

Truths had been exposed.

And trust—

Broken or not—

Would now decide everything.

Because in a world where even the badge could turn cold…

The difference between hunter and target wasn't always clear.

And Thabiso was standing right in the middle of it.
