Chapter 18 - Chapter 19: When the Hunter Becomes the Target

The room felt smaller the moment the police officer stepped inside.

Not because the walls had moved.

But because the truth had.

Thabiso sat upright in the hospital bed, his chest tightening as the officer closed the door behind him. Naledi remained standing, her posture alert, her eyes sharp with quiet suspicion.

The officer removed his cap slowly.

"My name is Sergeant Mokoena," he said. "I'm here about what happened on the bridge."

Thabiso nodded faintly. "I figured."

Mokoena studied him carefully. Not just like a cop—but like someone trying to measure the weight of a man's story before deciding whether to believe it.

"You're lucky to be alive," Mokoena said.

"I've heard that a lot," Thabiso replied.

Naledi crossed her arms. "Can we get to the point?"

Mokoena gave a small nod. "The men who attacked you… they're not random criminals."

"I know," Thabiso said quietly. "One of them is Kabelo."

The name shifted something in the air.

Mokoena's expression hardened slightly. "We were hoping you'd say that."

Naledi frowned. "What do you mean?"

The sergeant stepped closer.

"Kabelo is part of something bigger," he said. "A network. Small, but dangerous. They deal in illegal operations—money, information, people."

Thabiso felt a cold weight settle in his stomach.

"So this wasn't just about me," he said.

"No," Mokoena replied. "But you're connected now."

Silence followed.

Heavy. Real.

Naledi glanced at Thabiso. "Why would they want him?"

Mokoena hesitated for a second.

Then spoke carefully.

"Because he's a problem."

Thabiso blinked. "A problem?"

"Yes," Mokoena said. "You've refused to join them. You've resisted. And now… you've seen their faces. That makes you a risk."

Naledi's jaw tightened. "So what? They just get to hunt him?"

"No," Mokoena said firmly. "That's why I'm here."

Thabiso leaned forward slightly, ignoring the pain in his chest.

"What are you saying?"

Mokoena met his eyes.

"I'm saying we need your help."

---

The words hung in the air like a challenge.

Naledi reacted first.

"No," she said immediately. "Absolutely not."

Mokoena didn't seem surprised. "I understand your concern—"

"You want him to help you catch criminals who just tried to kill him!" Naledi snapped. "Does that sound reasonable to you?"

Thabiso raised a hand slightly. "Let him explain."

Naledi looked at him in disbelief. "You can't be serious."

"I need to hear this," he said.

Reluctantly, she stepped back.

Mokoena continued.

"We've been tracking this group for months," he said. "But they're careful. They don't leave easy evidence. They stay in the shadows."

"And you think I can change that?" Thabiso asked.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because they've already exposed themselves to you," Mokoena replied. "You've seen how they operate. You know Kabelo. That gives you an advantage we don't have."

Thabiso shook his head slowly. "Or it makes me a target."

"It does both," Mokoena admitted.

Naledi laughed bitterly. "Great plan."

But Thabiso wasn't laughing.

He was thinking.

"What exactly do you want me to do?" he asked.

Naledi turned to him sharply. "Thabiso—"

"Just listen," he said quietly.

Mokoena took a breath.

"We want you to help us draw them out," he said. "Make them believe you're vulnerable… or willing to talk."

Thabiso's eyes narrowed. "So you want me to be bait."

"In simple terms," Mokoena said, "yes."

The room fell silent again.

Naledi shook her head. "No. This is insane."

But Thabiso didn't answer immediately.

Because something inside him had already started shifting.

---

Later that day, after Mokoena left, the room felt different.

Heavier.

Naledi paced back and forth.

"You can't actually be considering this," she said.

Thabiso sat quietly, staring at his hands.

"They're not going to stop," he said finally.

"That doesn't mean you walk into danger!"

"I'm already in danger."

Naledi stopped pacing.

"That's exactly why you should stay away from this."

"And do what?" he asked. "Hide? Wait for them to come back?"

"Yes!" she said. "If it keeps you alive!"

Thabiso looked up at her.

"But that's not living."

The words hit harder than he expected.

Naledi's expression softened, but her eyes remained firm.

"Living also means choosing not to die," she said.

He gave a small, tired smile. "I almost died anyway."

"That's different."

"Is it?" he asked.

She hesitated.

And in that hesitation, Thabiso found his answer.

---

That night, sleep didn't come easily.

The hospital room felt too quiet.

Too still.

Thabiso stared at the ceiling again, his thoughts louder than ever.

He thought about Kabelo.

About the look in his eyes.

The anger.

The certainty.

"This isn't over."

The words echoed in his mind.

And for the first time, Thabiso realized something important.

Kabelo wasn't just chasing him.

He was hunting him.

And hunters didn't stop.

Unless they were stopped.

---

Morning came with clarity.

Naledi arrived early again, carrying food and worry in equal measure.

"You look like you made a decision," she said.

"I did," Thabiso replied.

She sat down slowly. "I'm not going to like it, am I?"

He shook his head.

"I'm going to help them."

Naledi closed her eyes briefly.

"Thabiso…"

"I need to do this," he said. "Not just for me. For everything they've done."

"And what if it goes wrong?" she asked.

"It might."

"That's not good enough!"

He leaned forward slightly, wincing at the pain but not stopping.

"If I do nothing, it will go wrong," he said. "They'll come back. They'll hurt more people."

Naledi looked at him, searching his face.

"You're not a police officer," she said. "You're not trained for this."

"No," he agreed. "But I know them."

"That doesn't make you safe."

"I don't need to be safe," he said quietly. "I need to be ready."

The words settled between them.

Naledi sighed, her shoulders dropping.

"You're really not going to change your mind."

"No."

She looked away, then back at him.

"Then I'm coming with you."

Thabiso shook his head immediately. "No."

"Yes."

"It's too dangerous."

"So is standing on a bridge in the rain facing a gun," she shot back. "But I was there."

He opened his mouth to argue.

Then stopped.

Because she was right.

Again.

---

A few days later, Thabiso stood outside the hospital for the first time since the shooting.

The air felt different.

Fresher.

But also sharper.

Like the world had edges now.

Naledi stood beside him.

"You sure you're ready for this?" she asked.

He took a slow breath.

"No," he admitted. "But I'm going anyway."

A car pulled up in front of them.

Sergeant Mokoena stepped out.

"Good," he said. "You're both here."

Naledi frowned. "Wait… both?"

Mokoena nodded. "If you're involved, we plan accordingly."

Thabiso looked at her. "You told him?"

She shrugged slightly. "I'm not staying behind."

Mokoena gestured toward the car.

"Let's move," he said. "We don't have much time."

Thabiso hesitated for just a second.

Then stepped forward.

Naledi followed.

---

As the car drove through the city, Thabiso watched the streets pass by.

Everything looked normal.

People walking.

Shops open.

Life moving forward.

But beneath it all, he knew the truth.

There were shadows here.

Hidden.

Waiting.

And he was driving straight into them.

Mokoena spoke from the front seat.

"We have reason to believe Kabelo will try to contact you," he said. "He won't want loose ends."

Thabiso nodded. "He'll come."

"Good," Mokoena said. "That's what we want."

Naledi glanced at Thabiso. "Just remember… you're not alone."

He looked at her.

And for the first time, he felt it fully.

Not just hope.

Not just fear.

But something stronger.

Resolve.

---

The car slowed as they reached their destination.

An abandoned building at the edge of the city.

Quiet.

Isolated.

Perfect for something dangerous.

Mokoena turned to them.

"This is where it begins," he said.

Thabiso stepped out of the car.

The wind brushed against his face.

The world felt still again.

But not empty.

Waiting.

He looked at the building.

At the shadows inside.

At the path ahead.

And he realized something.

He wasn't the same person who once ran from problems.

He wasn't the same person who stood helpless in the rain.

Now—

He was stepping forward.

Choosing the fight.

Choosing the risk.

Choosing the moment.

Naledi joined him at his side.

"Whatever happens," she said softly, "we face it together."

He nodded.

Then took one step forward.

Into the unknown.

Into the danger.

Into the moment where everything could change.

Because this time…

He wasn't being hunted.

He was hunting back.
