Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: The First Time I Saw Him Lose Control

The day should have felt normal.

It didn't.

Even after the morning passed, even after I forced myself through small routines—coffee, getting dressed, trying to pretend that my life hadn't shifted into something unrecognizable—nothing felt the same.

Because he was still there.

Not in the same room.

Not always within sight.

But present.

Constant.

Like the space around me had changed to fit him.

Or maybe—

to revolve around him.

"You don't have to follow me everywhere," I said, stopping just outside the café, turning to look at him.

Lucian stood a few steps behind me, his expression calm as always, like my words didn't change anything.

"I'm not following you," he said.

I frowned slightly. "Then what do you call this?"

"Being where I need to be."

"That's the same thing."

"No," he replied. "It's not."

Of course it wasn't.

Not to him.

Nothing ever was.

I let out a quiet breath, pushing the door open and stepping inside, the familiar chime echoing softly. For a second, I thought maybe—just maybe—this place would still feel normal.

It didn't.

Because the moment I stepped in—

the air shifted.

Subtle.

But unmistakable.

And I felt it.

That quiet tension.

That unseen awareness that had been following me since everything started.

My steps slowed.

"Do you feel that?" I asked softly.

"Yes."

His answer came immediately.

Of course it did.

My chest tightened slightly.

"What is it?"

This time—

he didn't answer.

And that was enough.

Because it meant something.

Something not good.

Riya waved from behind the counter, completely unaware, completely normal, smiling like nothing had changed.

And for a moment—

I envied her.

The simplicity.

The ignorance.

The safety.

"You're late," she called out.

"Yeah," I replied, forcing a small smile as I walked toward her. "Something came up."

Something always did now.

I tried to focus on work.

On orders.

On conversations that didn't matter.

But it didn't last.

Because the feeling didn't go away.

It stayed.

Lingering.

Watching.

And the worst part?

It wasn't afraid anymore.

Not like before.

Not like it had been when Lucian first stepped into my life.

Something had changed.

And I could feel it.

"Lucian," I whispered under my breath, not even looking at him this time.

"I know."

His voice was right behind me.

Closer than before.

Too close.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice barely steady now.

"A mistake," he said quietly.

My heart skipped.

"What kind of mistake?"

"The kind that shouldn't be here."

A chill ran through me.

Before I could ask anything else—

something moved.

Not outside.

Not far away.

Inside.

The lights flickered.

Just once.

But it was enough.

My breath caught.

And then—

everything went still.

Too still.

Like the world had paused.

Like something had stepped into a space it didn't belong in.

And for the first time—

I felt it clearly.

Not just a presence.

Not just a shadow.

Something real.

Something wrong.

Something looking directly at me.

My fingers tightened around the counter.

"Don't move," Lucian said quietly.

I didn't.

I couldn't.

Because something in his voice—

something I hadn't heard before—

made my entire body freeze.

Not calm.

Not controlled.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

And then—

I saw it.

Just for a second.

In the reflection of the glass behind the counter.

A shape.

Tall.

Distorted.

Too many angles.

Too many limbs.

And its eyes—

if they were eyes—

were fixed on me.

My breath caught sharply.

"Lucian—"

Before I could finish—

it moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

The glass behind me shattered instantly, exploding outward as something forced its way through, its form twisting unnaturally as it reached for me.

I didn't have time to react.

Didn't have time to think.

Because in the next second—

Lucian was there.

Between me and it.

And everything changed.

The air cracked.

Not like sound.

Like something deeper.

Something that didn't belong to this world.

His hand shot forward, catching the thing mid-motion, stopping it like it had hit something it couldn't pass.

And then—

for the first time—

I saw it.

Not just a glimpse.

Not just a shadow.

Him.

Lucian.

Not the version I had been seeing.

Not the controlled, calm, almost human version.

Something else.

Something darker.

Something real.

His eyes burned.

Not just red.

Brighter.

Deeper.

Like fire that didn't belong to anything natural.

And the calm—

it was gone.

Replaced by something I had never seen before.

Rage.

Pure.

Unfiltered.

Terrifying.

"You shouldn't have come here," he said.

His voice—

it wasn't the same.

It wasn't soft.

It wasn't calm.

It was something else.

Something that felt like it carried weight.

Power.

Like the world itself was listening.

The thing shrieked—though no sound came out—and twisted violently, trying to pull away.

It couldn't.

Lucian's grip tightened.

Effortless.

Unbreakable.

And then—

he crushed it.

Just like that.

No struggle.

No hesitation.

One moment it was there—

the next—

it was gone.

Like it had never existed.

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Complete.

The café was still.

Too still.

Riya stared, frozen, her expression blank, like she didn't fully understand what she had just seen.

Or maybe—

like she wasn't meant to.

My heart pounded in my chest, my breath uneven, my thoughts struggling to catch up with everything that had just happened.

But I couldn't look away from him.

From Lucian.

From the way he stood there—

still.

Unmoving.

His back to me.

His hand still slightly raised.

Like he wasn't finished.

Like something in him hadn't settled yet.

"Lucian…" I whispered.

Slowly—

he turned.

And my breath caught.

Because his eyes—

they were still glowing.

Still burning.

Still not human.

Not even close.

And for the first time since I met him—

I felt it.

Not curiosity.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Real fear.

Because this wasn't the version of him I had been getting used to.

This wasn't the version that touched me carefully.

That spoke softly.

That looked at me like I mattered.

This was something else.

Something dangerous.

Something that reminded me exactly what he was.

And for a second—

just a second—

I didn't recognize him.

His gaze locked onto mine.

Sharp.

Unfiltered.

And for a moment—

I thought—

I thought I had lost him.

That whatever control he had—

whatever restraint he had been holding onto—

was gone.

Completely.

The air around him felt heavier now.

Darker.

Like it responded to him.

Like it moved with him.

And I couldn't breathe.

Couldn't move.

Couldn't think.

Because all I could see—

was him.

And all I could feel—

was the distance that had suddenly formed between us.

Not physical.

Something else.

Something deeper.

Something that hadn't been there before.

"Lucian…" I said again.

Softer this time.

Careful.

Like I wasn't sure how he would react.

And that—

that was the moment everything shifted.

Because something in his expression changed.

Not immediately.

Not fully.

But enough.

Enough for me to see it.

That flicker.

That hesitation.

That moment where something inside him—

something dark—

pulled back.

Just slightly.

And his eyes—

they dimmed.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to remind me—

he was still there.

Somewhere.

Watching.

Fighting.

And for the first time—

I realized something that made my chest tighten.

It wasn't just me losing control around him.

It was him too.

And I didn't know if that made things better…

or infinitely worse.
