The transition from the golden fractals of Sigiriya to the emerald depths of the Sinharaja Rainforest was like stepping from a dream into a fever.
The air here didn't just carry the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. It carried the metallic tang of "Biological Ether." The trees weren't just wood and bark. Their trunks were translucent, pulsing with a rhythmic, green light that looked like a nervous system. The vines hanging from the canopy weren't plants. They were biological fiber-optics, twitching as they "Scanned" the forest floor for movement.
[LOCATION: SINHARAJA BIOLOGICAL LABORATORY (STAGE 3)]
[TRAIT: ACCELERATED EVOLUTION.]
Ethan led the way, his eyes glowing with a steady, violet light. He didn't look at the path. There was no path. He looked at the "Life-Streams" that were visible only to his Universal Logic Engine (ULE).
The jungle is a 'Living Processor,' Ethan calculated. The System has optimized every organism here to be a sensor. If we step on a single root, the entire forest will know our coordinates.
"Ethan, the trees... they're watching us," Krishara whispered. She was walking close behind him, her hands glowing with a soft, emerald light. She was "weaving" a layer of dead life-force around their feet to mask their vibrations.
"They're not just watching, Krish," Ethan said, his voice a low, sharp command. "They're 'Calculating.' The System is using the Sinharaja root system as a distributed computer. It's trying to find the 'Anomaly' that escaped Kandy."
He looked back at Nethan. The boy was walking in the center of their formation, his small face set in a mask of grim determination. His Iron Guard talent was active, a faint, grey shimmer that protected him from the stinging "Data-Insects" that were swarming the air.
Looking at the boy, Ethan felt a brief, sharp memory flicker in his mind, a "Logic Anchor" from the old world.
Three years ago, Ethan thought. The day I met Krishara in that small cafe in Colombo. She had been sitting alone, a 2-year-old Nethan asleep in her lap. Her sister had died in a tragic accident just months before, leaving Krishara as the sole guardian of a child the world had already written off as "Ordinary."
But Ethan's Universal Logic Engine (Ordinary version), even then, had seen the truth. He hadn't seen a "Normal" toddler. He had seen a "Structural Anchor," a child whose physical density was already 1.4 times higher than the human average.
I didn't marry her for a 'Normal' life, Ethan realized, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the jungle. I married her because she was the only one who could protect him, and I became his father because I was the only one who could teach him how to live as an ordinary person with a physique like that.
"Appachchi, something is coming," Nethan said, his voice a small, steady whisper.
Ethan stopped. He didn't hear anything. He didn't see anything. But his Quantum Calculation passive suddenly flared with a blood-red warning.
[WARNING: OPTIMIZED PREDATOR DETECTED.]
[ENTITY: THE JUNGLE-STALKER (STAGE 2 / ELITE)]
[LEVEL: 22]
Out of the emerald shadows, a shape manifested. It didn't "Step" out. It "Rendered" into existence.
It was a creature that looked like a cross between a black panther and a praying mantis. Its skin was made of carbon-fiber scales, and its limbs were jagged, serrated blades of bone. Its eyes weren't biological. They were glowing blue "Lenses" that were scanning Ethan's thermal signature.
["Target Identified,"] the Stalker hissed, its voice a synthesized growl. ["Initiating Biological Purge."]
It moved with a speed that defied the laws of physics. It didn't run. It "Flickered" across the forest floor, its movements synchronized with the "Refresh Rate" of the jungle's sensors.
"Nethan! Absolute Layer: Temporal Stasis!" Ethan Shouted.
The boy didn't hesitate. He slammed his hands together, and a sphere of frozen, silver light erupted around them.
The Stalker struck the barrier.
CLANG.
The sound was like a hammer hitting an anvil. The creature's bone-blades struck the silver light and stopped. They didn't bounce off. They were "Locked" in time.
[Barrier Integrity: 92%.]
"Krishara! De-Optimize! Now!"
Krishara stepped forward, her hands glowing with a brilliant, emerald light. She didn't attack the creature's body. She attacked its "Code."
"Vital De-Optimization: Genetic Reset!"
She sent a pulse of energy into the Stalker's carbon-fiber scales.
The effect was instantaneous and horrific. The creature's "Optimized" skin began to boil and melt. The carbon-fiber turned back into raw carbon, and the serrated bone-blades softened into useless cartilage.
["Error... Error... Biological Integrity: 42%..."] the Stalker screeched, its blue lenses flickering.
"My turn," Ethan whispered.
He didn't use "Space Compression." He used his new Stage 2 skill.
"Spatial Redefinition: Molecular Shear!"
He didn't just fold the space around the creature. He "Sliced" the coordinates it was standing on.
The Stalker didn't even have time to scream. Its body was divided into a thousand microscopic slices, each one "Redefined" into a different part of the forest.

Ethan slumped against a pulsing, green tree, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
[Ether: 120/760]
"We did it," Nethan cheered, his silver glow fading. "Did you see that, Appachchi? It couldn't move!"
"I saw it, Nethan," Ethan said, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. "You held the 'Time' of the world. You were perfect."
He looked at Krishara. She was pale, her hands trembling from the effort of the "De-Optimization," but her eyes were bright with a new, fierce power.
"The jungle is fighting us, Ethan," she said, looking at the melting remains of the Stalker. "But it's also 'Learning' from us. The next one will be immune to that reset."
"I know," Ethan said, his eyes glowing with a cold, violet light. "That's why we need to reach the Key of Life before the System finishes the 'Patch.' We're not just fighting monsters anymore, Krish. We're fighting an 'Evolutionary Algorithm.'"
He looked at his status window.

Seventy-six Intelligence, Ethan thought, looking deeper into the emerald heart of the forest. I can see the 'Source Code' of the trees now. I can see the path to the Chimera.
"Move," Ethan commanded. "The 'Laboratory' war is just getting started."
