Chapter 10 - AVATAR OF LORD KRISHNA

Chapter 1: The Shadow Over Mathura

The air in Mathura was no longer sweet with the scent of lotus and incense; it reeked of smoke and fear. Prince Kansa, a man whose physical prowess was matched only by his bottomless cruelty, had returned from his campaigns of conquest. He did not merely defeat his enemies; he sought to erase them. As his chariot rolled through the dusty streets, the citizens didn't cheer; they hid. To Kansa, a city only looked beautiful when it was reflected in the glow of a burning village.

In his court, Kansa received the praise of his father-in-law, Jarasandha, the mighty King of Magadha. Jarasandha saw in Kansa the future of Bharat—a man of iron who viewed mercy as a defect. "You are the setting sun of the old ways and the rising storm of the new," Jarasandha proclaimed. Kansa basked in the flattery, his ego swelling like a poisonous cloud.

Chapter 2: The Usurpation

While Kansa celebrated his bloody victories, a delegation of citizens led by the wise Vasudev and the elder Akrur approached King Ugrasena. Their faces were etched with despair. They spoke of a Mathura where no daughter was safe, where the temples were desecrated, and where the law was merely Kansa's whim.

Ugrasena, a man of peace, was heartbroken. "If my people fear their prince more than they love their king, then I have failed this throne," he lamented. But before Ugrasena could act, the doors of the assembly burst open.

Kansa entered, still clad in his battle-stained armor. The tension was thick enough to cut. When Ugrasena rebuked his son for his atrocities, Kansa did not bow. Instead, he laughed. "A king who cannot command fear is but a ghost in a crown," Kansa sneered.

In a moment that shocked the kingdom, Kansa demanded the crown. When Ugrasena refused, Kansa's soldiers surrounded the elderly king. Kansa reached out and tore the crown from his father's head. "You have lived too long in the past, Father. It is time for you to reside in the darkness of the dungeons." Ugrasena was dragged away, leaving Kansa to sit upon the throne, a king of shadows and blood.

Chapter 3: The Prophecy

Desperate to solidify his power through alliances, Kansa arranged a marriage between his beloved sister, Devaki, and his friend Vasudev. Despite his cruelty, Kansa harbored a strange, possessive affection for Devaki. He decided to act as their charioteer, personally driving the newlyweds to their home as a display of his "magnanimity."

The procession was grand, but the atmosphere changed as they reached the edge of the city. Suddenly, the sky darkened. A celestial voice, booming like thunder, echoed across the plains:

"O Kansa! You fool! You drive the chariot of the woman whose eighth child will be your death! The Lord of the Universe will take birth from her womb to end your reign of terror!"

Kansa's face turned from a mask of joy to a contortion of pure terror. The pride he felt for his sister vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating instinct for survival. He leaped from the chariot, his sword unsheathed and aimed at Devaki's throat.

Chapter 4: The Pact of Despair

"If there is no mother, there can be no son!" Kansa roared, his eyes wild.

Vasudev threw himself before his bride. "Kansa! She is your sister! She is the one you claimed to love more than your own life!" He pleaded with the tyrant, knowing that logic would not work on a man consumed by fear.

"Kansa," Vasudev said, his voice trembling but firm, "you fear a child not yet conceived. Do not stain your hands with the blood of your sister. I give you my word as a Yadava—every child born to us will be delivered to you. Spare her life, and I will hand you your death, one birth at a time."

Kansa hesitated. The prophecy said the eighth child would kill him. If he controlled the births, he could control his fate. With a cruel smirk, he lowered his sword. "Very well, Vasudev. But you will not live in a palace. You will live in the stone coldness of my prison. If you fail to deliver a single child, I will slaughter you both."

Chapter 5: The Walls of Silence

The newlyweds were marched not to a flower-strewn bedroom, but to the damp, lightless depths of the Mathura prison. Their only neighbor was the deposed King Ugrasena, who wept at the sight of his daughter in chains.

In the palace, Kansa became obsessed. He visited a sage, seeking to understand the nature of "eight." The sage, mocking Kansa's fear, pointed out that in a circle, any point can be the first or the eighth. Driven to madness by this ambiguity, Kansa decided he would not take risks. He would kill all of Devaki's children.

As the years passed, the prison became a temple of sorrow. Each time Devaki gave birth, the heavy iron doors would groan open. Kansa would enter, silent and grim, and snatch the crying infant from its mother's arms. Six times he did this, and six times the stones of the prison were washed with innocent blood.

Chapter 6: The Long Night

Devaki grew thin, her eyes hollowed by grief. Vasudev remained her pillar of strength, reminding her of the prophecy. "We are not just prisoners, Devaki. We are the guardians of the future. The seventh child will be special, and the eighth... the eighth will be our liberation."

The seventh child, through divine intervention, was transferred to the womb of Rohini, Vasudev's first wife, to be raised in safety. But to Kansa, it appeared as a miscarriage, further agitating his nerves.

Now, the air in Mathura felt electric. The eighth pregnancy had begun. The guards were doubled, the chains were thickened, and Kansa stayed awake, sword in hand, watching the moon. He believed he was ready to fight God Himself. He did not realize that the very walls of his prison were waiting to witness the birth of the Light that would consume his darkness.
