VOICEOVER
There's a difference between talking and being heard. Most people talk to fill the silence. To perform. To prove they're still alive. But being heard... that's rare. That's someone listening not to respond, but to understand. And when you find someone who hears you, you do one of two things: you run toward them, or you run away. Aaron had been running his whole life. He just didn't know it yet.
THE LIBRARY – AFTERNOON
Mandy found Aaron in the back corner of the library, surrounded by anatomy textbooks, his head in his hands.
She didn't say anything. Just sat down across from him.
He looked up. His eyes were red. "How did you find me?"
"I asked Charlie. He said you were 'studying in the sad part of the library.'"
"There's a sad part?"
"There is now."
She pulled out a notebook. Not to take notes; to doodle. She drew a small clown face in the margin.
"I meant what I said," she said quietly. "No games."
"I know."
"But you don't believe me."
"I want to." He closed his textbook. "I just don't know how."
"Then let me prove it." She put down her pen. "Ask me something. Anything. I'll answer honestly."
He thought for a moment. "Why Jon?"
"What about him?"
"Why are you with him? He's good. Stable. Kind. You're..." He stopped.
"I'm what?"
"Restless."
Mandy smiled. It was a real smile; small, a little sad. "That's fair. Jon is safe. He's the kind of guy you bring home to your mother. He doesn't make me feel like I'm on fire. And sometimes... sometimes I want to be on fire."
"And Arie?"
"And Arie makes me feel like I'm burning alive." She held his gaze. "But I don't think that's his fault. I think that's mine."
Aaron didn't know what to say. So he said nothing.
They sat in silence for a long time. Not uncomfortable. Just... present.
"Ask me something," he said finally.
"Okay." She tilted her head. "Why do you stay with Vicky?"
"Because she loves me."
"Do you love her?"
He opened his mouth. Closed it. "I don't know."
"That's the most honest thing you've said all day."
"It's the most honest thing I've said all year."
She reached across the table. Her fingers brushed his. "Then maybe it's time to figure it out."
She didn't pull away. Neither did he.
They stayed like that until the librarian told them to leave.
JON AND AARON – THE COMMON ROOM, EVENING
Jon was watching JJK alone. The new episode had dropped. He hadn't told Aaron.
Aaron walked in, saw him, almost turned around.
"Sit down," Jon said. Not an invitation. A command.
Aaron sat.
They watched in silence for five minutes. Ten. Fifteen.
"Mandy's been different lately," Jon said, not looking away from the screen.
"Different how?"
"Distracted. Happy. Sad. I can't tell." Jon paused. "She talks about you a lot."
"She talks about everyone."
"No. She talks about everyone. She talks differently about you."
Aaron's throat tightened. "Jon..."
"I'm not accusing you of anything." Jon finally looked at him. "I'm just telling you what I see. You're my friend. She's my girlfriend. I don't want to lose either of you."
"You won't."
"Good." Jon looked back at the screen. "Because if I do, I'll have to kill you. And I don't want to go to prison."
He said it like a joke. It wasn't a joke.
Aaron laughed anyway.
It was the only thing he could do.
OLIVER – THE HOSPITAL, SAME DAY
Oliver sat up in bed, staring at the wall.
Nelly had gone home to shower. The room was quiet except for the beeping of the monitor.
The door opened.
Ese walked in.
Oliver blinked. "What are you doing here?"
"Visiting." She sat in the plastic chair beside his bed. "You almost died."
"I know."
"How do you feel?"
"Like shit."
She nodded. "Good."
"Good?"
"Good. Because now you know what it feels like. Maybe next time you'll think twice."
Oliver stared at her. "Who the fuck are you?"
"Someone who's been watching." She leaned forward. "You're not the only one with secrets, Oliver. You're just the loudest."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
Ese stood up. "It means be careful. The water is deeper than you think."
She walked out.
Oliver stared at the door.
He didn't understand what had just happened.
But a cold feeling settled in his chest.
THE GIRLS' DORM – NIGHT
Vicky, Zizi, and Ese were in the room. Zuru was out. Some guy. Some party. Some lie.
Vicky was braiding her hair. "Aaron's been different lately."
"Different how?" Zizi asked.
"Quieter. More present. Like he's actually there when we're together."
"Isn't that a good thing?"
"I don't know." Vicky paused. "I'm scared he's going to realize he doesn't love me."
Ese looked up from her book. "Or maybe he's realizing he does."
Vicky turned to look at her. "That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me."
Ese shrugged. "Don't get used to it."
Zizi laughed. Vicky smiled.
But Ese wasn't smiling.
She was thinking about Oliver. About the pool. About how easy it would have been to let him drown.
Next time, she thought.
Next time.
MANDY – HER ROOM, LATE NIGHT
Mandy lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
Jon was asleep beside her. His arm was draped over her waist. His breathing was steady.
She thought about Aaron. About his hand on hers in the library. About the way he said "I don't know" when she asked if he loved Vicky.
He doesn't know, she thought. That's the truth. He doesn't know anything.
She wanted to be the one who helped him figure it out.
She didn't know if that made her a good person or a terrible one.
She decided she didn't care.
She closed her eyes.
Tomorrow, she would text him again.
Tomorrow, she would try again.
Tomorrow, she would be what he needed.
Even if it killed her.
VOICEOVER
People talk about love like it's a destination. Like you wake up one day and just know. But that's not how it works. Love is a series of small decisions. A text you send. A hand you don't pull away. A conversation you stay for. And by the time you realize you're in it, you've been in it for weeks. Months. Your whole life. Aaron didn't know he was falling. Mandy didn't know she was catching him. And Jon... Jon was starting to suspect. That's the thing about secrets. They have a weight. And eventually, the floor gives way.
