Chapter 28 - Chapter 27: Love on Her Terms

Lina sat across from Adrian in his office, the late afternoon light spilling softly through the glass walls, casting everything in a calm, golden glow.

Her hands were folded neatly in her lap, though her fingers gave away the quiet nervousness she refused to let show in her voice.

"I like you," she said again, her tone softer this time, more certain—but also more vulnerable, "but things can't just change overnight."

Adrian didn't rush to respond.

He never did when it mattered.

Instead, he simply watched her for a moment—really watched her—like he was taking in not just her words, but the weight behind them.

Then he nodded slowly.

"I understand," he said, his voice steady, grounded. "We take it at your pace. Always."

There was no push in his tone. No expectation. No hidden agenda.

Just acceptance.

Lina studied him carefully, as if searching for any sign that he might be saying the right thing just to keep the moment intact.

But there wasn't any.

Only sincerity.

Only patience.

A small smile tugged at her lips before she could stop it.

"You don't have to coddle me," she teased lightly, tilting her head just slightly, trying to ease the intensity of the moment.

Adrian's lips curved faintly in response, his expression softening in a way that felt effortless.

"I wouldn't dare," he said.

His voice was calm.

But there was something in his eyes—

Something warm.

Something real.

Something that didn't need to be spoken out loud to be understood.

For a brief moment, the space between them felt different.

Not distant.

Not uncertain.

But safe.

Lina exhaled quietly, her shoulders easing just a little as she leaned back in her chair. For so long, she had guarded herself—careful, measured, unwilling to give too much of herself to anyone who might not stay.

But Adrian—

He stayed.

Not loudly.

Not forcefully.

But consistently.

And that made all the difference.

She looked at him again, really looked this time, and something in her softened.

For the first time, she didn't feel the need to question his intentions.

Didn't feel the need to pull away.

Didn't feel the need to protect herself from him.

Instead—

She felt something new.

Trust.

Not blind.

Not naive.

But real.

And growing.

And Adrian, as if sensing the shift, didn't press forward.

Didn't try to define it.

Didn't try to rush it.

He simply stayed where he was, giving her the space to come to him on her own terms.

Because this—whatever this was—

Wasn't about winning.

Wasn't about control.

It was about choosing each other.

Again.

And again.

Until it became something neither of them would ever have to question.
