Chapter 23 - Chapter 22: A Sudden Crisis

The hospital lights felt colder than usual.

Not because of the temperature—but because of what they meant.

Lina ran through the hallway, footsteps echoing, breath uneven, heart racing like it was trying to outrun the fear growing inside her.

"...Room 203—"

She turned sharply and pushed the door open.

"Ma—!"

The words caught in her throat.

Her mother lay unconscious on the bed, pale under the harsh white lights. Machines beeped in steady, merciless rhythm, reminding her that time was still moving—whether she was ready or not.

Her brother stood in the corner, shoulders shaking, tears slipping down his face.

"Ate… they said she got worse…"

The words didn't fully register.

Or maybe Lina just didn't want to hear them.

She rushed to her mother's side, gripping her hand.

"No… no…" her voice cracked, trembling. "You said you were getting better…"

But there was no response.

Just silence.

Just the steady beeping.

Her hands trembled as she held on tighter, as if she could pull her mother back through sheer will alone.

Her mind started racing.

Doctor visits.

Medication.

Treatment.

Bills—

Bills.

The word hit harder than anything else.

Her chest tightened painfully.

"…I'll fix this," she whispered, though her voice shook. "I'll do something…"

But even as she said it—

something inside her faltered.

For the first time in her life—

Lina felt it.

Fear.

Real fear.

Not the kind that passes.

But the kind that settles deep in your chest and refuses to leave.

The kind that whispers:

What if it's not enough?

No matter how hard she worked.

No matter how much she sacrificed.

No matter how much she tried—

What if it still wasn't enough?

Outside the room—

a quiet conversation unfolded.

A doctor spoke in a low, serious tone.

"She needs immediate treatment."

Lina stepped out, her voice tight. "How much?"

The number was given.

Clear.

Final.

Unforgiving.

It landed like a storm crashing into still water.

For a moment—

everything in Lina's mind went quiet.

Her vision blurred slightly.

Her throat tightened.

"…I understand," she said weakly.

But she didn't.

Not really.

Because there was no way—

no possible way—

she could afford that.

The weight of it pressed down on her.

Heavy.

Unrelenting.

Final.

That night—

the hospital hallway stretched endlessly around her.

Lina sat alone on a bench, her back slightly hunched, head bowed.

Her hands were clenched so tightly her fingers ached.

She didn't cry.

Not yet.

She just… sat there.

Staring at nothing.

Thinking of everything.

"…What do I do…"

Her voice was barely a whisper.

For once—

there was no smile.

No confidence.

No strength she could lean on.

Just silence.

And the crushing realization that for the first time in a long time—

she didn't know how to fix this.

And worse—

she didn't know if she could.
