Chapter 323: Personal Guidance, Four Divergent Emotions
Dust plumed into the air, settling slowly over the jagged edges of a massive crater. Naruto and Gaara stood on opposite sides of the scorched earth, their chests heaving as they dragged in ragged breaths. The sheer kinetic force from the collision between the Great Ball Rasengan and the surging Sea of Sand had scorched the ground, burning through a massive reserve of their chakra.
Yet, as the smoke cleared, both boys remained standing. Gaara's famed Absolute Defense had shattered, the hardened shell of sand flaking off his skin in jagged chunks, but the sheer density of the sand waves had successfully bled the destructive momentum from Naruto's attack. Even so, the shockwave had thrown the red-haired shinobi backward, leaving his usually pristine robes dusted with dirt and grit.
"Cough... cough..." Gaara straightened his posture, brushing a layer of loose dirt from his shoulder. His pale green eyes locked onto the blonde boy across the pit. "You are very strong, Naruto."
"Heh!" Naruto flashed a wide, toothy grin, reaching up to scratch the back of his head. "You're not so bad yourself! That tidal wave of yours almost buried me alive!"
Muscles coiled. Chakra flared around them once more as they prepared to launch into another exchange.
"That is enough."
The voice was neither loud nor strained, yet it cut through the lingering tension like a physical blade. Uchiha Akira stepped out from the periphery, his footsteps silent against the cracked earth.
"You should both have a clear understanding of each other's limits by now." His dark, piercing gaze shifted to the blonde jinchuriki. "Naruto. Your raw power is suitably wild, but your chakra control remains utterly unrefined."
Akira paused, his eyes narrowing slightly. "That Great Ball Rasengan carried sufficient destructive force, but the execution was wasteful. You bled excess chakra into the surrounding air before the impact even landed. Efficiency is the difference between life and death."
A faint flush of embarrassment crept up Naruto's cheeks. He rubbed his nose, looking away.
Akira's attention pivoted. "Gaara."
The Kazekage's son stiffened under the Hokage's heavy gaze.
"Your Absolute Defense is a highly functional integration of offense and defense. It is a troublesome barrier for most conventional shinobi to bypass." Akira took a slow step forward, his tone turning clinical. "However, your entire combat foundation relies exclusively on that sand. Your methods are entirely linear. The moment you face an opponent whose elemental affinity counters earth and wind, or a combatant whose physical speed outpaces your sand's automated reaction time, you will be reduced to a sitting duck."
Gaara's breath hitched. His fists clenched at his sides as the brutal truth of the assessment sank in. Akira had surgically dissected his greatest flaw in mere seconds.
"Alright." Akira gave a single, sharp clap that echoed across the training grounds. "Rest for a moment. Regulate your breathing and recover your chakra."
Naruto blinked, tilting his head. "Teacher? Are we done fighting?"
"Done?" A faint, chillingly calm smile touched the corners of Akira's lips. "Of course we are not done."
He uncrossed his arms, the fabric of his dark robes shifting in the wind. "Shortly, I will take the field myself. I intend to let you experience the true weight of a genuine powerhouse."
The air in the training ground seemed to freeze.
Naruto and Gaara's pupils shrank to pinpricks. On the sidelines, Hinata and Temari subconsciously stopped breathing, their postures instantly locking up.
The Hokage was going to fight them personally?
The suffocating silence shattered a second later.
"Hell yes!!!" Naruto vaulted into the air, his fists pumped high above his head, his face flushed with pure, unadulterated adrenaline. "This is awesome! Teacher is actually going to fight us himself!"
Gaara's reaction could not have been more different.
The instant those words left Akira's mouth, a violent shudder wracked the red-haired boy's frame. A bone-deep chill, originating from the very core of his soul, flooded his veins.
Was there excitement? Perhaps a sliver. To cross blows with a shinobi of this caliber was a privilege most warriors would die for. But eclipsing that faint spark of thrill was pure, suffocating terror.
Gaara's mind violently flashed back to the day the sky over Sunagakure darkened. He would never, ever forget the sight of Uchiha Akira single-handedly crushing the entire Hidden Sand Village. Even Rasa, his father and the man hailed as the strongest Kazekage in history, had been swatted aside like a mere insect.
Beads of cold sweat broke out across Gaara's pale forehead. This was not cowardice. It was the biological, primal instinct of a living creature standing before an apex predator. It was the physical manifestation of an impossible gap in power.
Akira's dark eyes drifted past the boys, landing on the two kunoichi observing from the edge of the crater. "Temari. Hinata. Step forward."
His gaze swept over the four genin, taking in their wildly contrasting expressions. "For this next phase, the four of you will form a single combat cell." He spread his hands slightly. "And fight me."
"Hokage-sama!" Temari blurted out, her voice cracking slightly in disbelief. "Are... are you saying all four of us are fighting you at once?"
It had to be a joke. Temari had witnessed this man's apocalyptic power firsthand. She had seen him tear the desert apart and bring her entire nation to its knees without breaking a sweat. Now, four green genin were supposed to coordinate an attack against a living god? This was not a training exercise. This was a one-sided execution.
Akira's eyes locked onto Temari. He read the sheer panic swirling behind her teal eyes with effortless precision.
"Calm yourself," he commanded, his voice smooth and entirely devoid of malice. "This is a controlled instructional bout. I will restrain my lethality. The objective is not to break you."
He looked at each of them in turn. "The objective is to force you to comprehend the exact dimensions of the chasm that separates your current abilities from the pinnacle of this world."
The Hokage's assurance managed to untie the tightest knot of panic in Temari's chest, but the icy dread lingering in her blood refused to melt. She swallowed hard, her grip tightening on the massive iron fan strapped to her back.
Beside her, Hinata stepped forward. In stark contrast to Naruto's manic energy and the Sand siblings' barely concealed terror, the Hyuga heiress radiated a quiet, focused calm. Her pale eyes were already locked onto Akira, analyzing his stance.
"Very well." Akira's voice snapped their wandering focus back to the present. "I will grant you exactly ten minutes to formulate a tactical strategy. When the time expires, the engagement begins."
Without waiting for a response, Akira closed his eyes, his breathing slowing to an imperceptible rhythm as he stood completely motionless in the center of the ruined field.
"Hey! Get over here!" Naruto hissed, waving the other three into a tight circle. The usual goofy grin was entirely gone from his face, replaced by a fierce, razor-sharp intensity. "We all know exactly what Teacher is capable of. If we hold back even a single drop of chakra, we're going to get crushed in seconds. We have to go for the kill right out of the gate!"
Temari drew in a long, shaky breath, forcibly suppressing the lingering tremors in her hands. She gave a sharp nod. "I agree. Hokage-sama's strength defies logic. Throwing out probing attacks or testing his defenses will only waste our chakra. We hit him with everything we have."
Gaara remained completely silent, his jaw locked tight. However, the cork on the massive gourd strapped to his back popped loose. A stream of pale yellow sand began to slither out, swirling restlessly around his ankles like a viper scenting blood.
"Hinata, you're our eyes!" Naruto turned to the dark-haired girl. "Keep your Byakugan active the entire time. Track his chakra flow, predict his movements, and call out any blind spots if he actually has one!"
Hinata gave a firm, heavy nod, her fingers already twitching toward the hand seals.
"Gaara, your sand has the widest range. You take the vanguard. Focus on restricting his footwork and locking down his evasion routes!" Naruto continued, his strategic instincts flaring to life. "Temari, hang back. Use your Wind Release to provide heavy artillery cover and disrupt his line of sight! I'll stay in his blind spots and wait for the perfect opening to nail him with a Rasengan!"
The battle plan was incredibly simple, bordering on crude. Yet, given their limited time and lack of prior teamwork, it was the most efficient allocation of their respective talents.
Temari and Gaara murmured their agreement in unison. Still, the heavy, suffocating grimness refused to leave their faces.
"Hey, hey! Wipe those looks off your faces!" Naruto barked softly, trying to inject some warmth into the tense huddle. "I know exactly what you guys are afraid of. Honestly? My hands are sweating right now too!"
He let out a short, slightly embarrassed chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck.
"But think about it! This is Teacher stepping down to fight us himself! Do you know how rare this is?" His blue eyes blazed with sudden, infectious fire. "And don't forget, we're a squad right now. We're comrades. You don't have to face that monster all by yourselves. I've got your backs, and you've got mine!"
Naruto brought his fist up, striking it hard against his own chest. "So shake it off! Let's go out there and give Teacher a massive surprise!"
The sheer, unyielding brightness of Naruto's conviction worked like a charm. The suffocating pressure squeezing Temari and Gaara's lungs finally eased, replaced by a cold, focused determination.
Ten minutes evaporated in the blink of an eye.
Across the ruined field, Uchiha Akira's dark eyes slowly drifted open.
"Are you ready?"
"Anytime, Teacher!"
