Chapter 322 - Naruto vs. Gaara

Chapter 322: Naruto vs. Gaara

"Naruto. Gaara."

Uchiha Akira's voice cut through the quiet air of the training ground, his expression settling into a mask of measured authority. "You two will spar first. Test each other's limits. Feel the extent of your current strength."

Naruto blinked, processing the command for a fraction of a second before a wide, feral grin split his face. The sheer thrill of battle ignited in his bright blue eyes. He slammed a clenched fist into his open palm with a sharp smack, pivoting to face the red-haired boy from Suna.

"Gaara! I've been waiting for a real fight with you for a long time! Don't you dare hold back!"

Gaara's features remained entirely impassive, a stark contrast to Naruto's burning enthusiasm. His pale sea-green eyes locked onto the blonde ninja. Slowly, he offered a single, shallow nod.

"Alright."

"Hinata, Temari," Akira continued, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Observe from the perimeter."

"Yes, Sensei!" Hinata responded immediately, bowing her head before retreating toward the tree line at the edge of the rocky field.

Temari, however, hesitated. A deep crease formed between her brows. She knew better than anyone the sheer, unadulterated terror her younger brother unleashed the moment bloodlust took hold. Even though Gaara's volatile temperament had stabilized significantly since arriving in Konoha, the ruthless killing instinct of the desert was carved directly into his bones.

"Hokage-sama... this..." Temari bit her lower lip, her fingers twitching toward her giant folding fan.

"Do not worry." Akira's dark eyes slid toward her, instantly dismantling her rising panic with a single, absolute stare. "With me standing here, nothing will go wrong."

The absolute certainty in his voice forced the tension from Temari's shoulders. She exhaled a shaky breath, nodding as she stepped back, though her heart continued to hammer against her ribs.

The center of the training ground cleared, leaving only the two jinchuriki facing off across the expanse of cracked stone. Naruto dropped his center of gravity, bending his knees and raising his hands into a familiar cross-shaped seal.

"Here I come, Gaara!" he roared. "Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

Plumes of thick white smoke erupted across the rocky terrain in a deafening chain of concussive pops. When the smoke cleared a split second later, a massive sea of orange and blonde flooded the field. Dozens upon dozens of identical Narutos materialized, kicking off the ground in unison. They swarmed Gaara from every conceivable angle, their battle cries echoing through the air. The human wave tactic. It was Naruto's most practiced, most brutally direct method of overwhelming an opponent.

Against the suffocating tide of charging clones, Gaara did not shift a single inch. He stood perfectly still, his arms crossed loosely over his chest. The cork of the massive gourd slung across his back popped off. A dense stream of pale yellow sand surged upward like a geyser. In the blink of an eye, the amorphous cloud split into dozens of razor-thin, whip-like tentacles. They lashed outward, their speed completely eclipsing the charging clones.

The vanguard of the clone army did not even manage to graze the fabric of Gaara's clothes. The sand spikes impaled them with ruthless precision. Clones burst into useless clouds of vapor one after another, the pops ringing out like rapid-fire explosions. The sand did not pause to rest. It moved with a terrifying, autonomous fluidity, sweeping horizontally to crush three clones against the earth, then snapping upward to tear two more out of the sky.

"So... so strong!" Hinata gasped from the sidelines, her pale eyes widening in shock. She watched the grains of sand shift and strike with a mind of their own, requiring absolutely no hand seals or physical movement from their master.

"This is Gaara's Absolute Defense," Temari murmured, her expression hardening into a mask of grim solemnity. It was a flawless system that married impenetrable shielding with lethal, autonomous counterattacks. Any enemy foolish enough to step within his radius would simply be ground into dust by the endless, suffocating waves.

'Damn it! This guy's sand is way too troublesome!' Naruto's true body crouched behind a jagged boulder near the edge of the skirmish, his teeth grinding together as he watched his clone army get systematically slaughtered. He needed a distraction. Something to break that perfect rhythm.

"In that case..." Naruto inhaled sharply, his fingers blurring through a rapid sequence of hand seals. "Wind Release: Great Breakthrough!"

He exhaled a violent, compressed gale from his lungs. The roaring current of air tore across the training ground, ripping loose stones from the earth and kicking up a blinding cloud of dust as it howled directly toward Gaara. Simultaneously, Naruto thrust his right hand out. A brilliant, azure sphere of pure chakra began to rapidly condense in his palm, the high-speed rotation emitting a sharp, grinding screech. The Rasengan.

His strategy was simple but effective: use the Wind Release to blind his opponent and scatter the autonomous sand, then close the distance under the cover of the storm to deliver a devastating point-blank strike.

However, Gaara's reaction speed completely shattered those expectations.

As the howling gale threatened to rip the very ground apart, the loose sand pooling at Gaara's feet surged upward in a massive wave. It compacted instantly, hardening into an incredibly dense, towering wall of packed earth. The raging wind slammed into the barricade with a heavy, muffled boom. Dust plumed outward, but the wall itself did not yield a single inch.

But Naruto was no longer standing in front of the wall. Using the chaotic dust storm as a visual blind spot, the blonde ninja burst from the swirling debris on Gaara's blind side. The blue sphere in his hand whirred violently, the compressed chakra spinning at its absolute limit.

"Take this! Rasengan!"

Naruto roared, his muscles straining as he thrust the grinding orb of destruction directly toward Gaara's exposed ribs. The distance was practically zero. The speed of the ambush was flawless. There was no time for the sand wall to shift and protect him.

Yet, a mere fraction of a second before the lethal chakra sphere made contact, a pale, chalky texture crawled over Gaara's skin. A hyper-compressed layer of minerals instantly enveloped his entire body, molding into a flawless, skin-tight Sand Armor.

The Rasengan slammed directly into his side.

The violent, grinding force of the sphere erupted upon impact. The sheer kinetic pressure radiating from the clash tore into the environment. The solid rock beneath Gaara's sandals fractured, deep fissures spider-webbing outward as a massive crater, several meters wide, was violently gouged into the earth. A thick curtain of pulverized rock and dust exploded into the air, obscuring the impact zone.

"Did it work?!" Naruto panted, his chest heaving as he skidded back, his blue eyes locked onto the swirling epicenter of the blast.

The heavy dust slowly settled. Gaara's silhouette emerged from the haze. He had not moved a single step. His arms remained loosely at his sides, completely unharmed. The only evidence of the devastating strike was a deep, swirling indentation carved into the Sand Armor over his ribs, with a network of fine, spider-web cracks branching outward across the hardened shell.

"Your attack is strong, Naruto," Gaara stated, his voice a flat, emotionless drone. "But it still cannot reach me."

"Damn it!" Naruto ground his teeth together, a sharp spike of frustration gnawing at his gut. Gaara's defense was an impenetrable fortress. There were no blind spots, no delays, no openings to exploit.

"Next, it is my turn."

Gaara's tone dropped, carrying the chilling weight of the deep desert. He slowly raised his right hand, his fingers spreading wide. The entire surface of the training ground began to shudder. The violent tremors escalated as the hard rock beneath their feet began to groan and disintegrate. Endless waves of yellow sand poured outward from Gaara's position, devouring the stone and transmuting the earth itself. In a matter of seconds, the vast, solid battlefield was completely swallowed, replaced by a churning, surging ocean of loose sand.

"Sand Tsunami!"

Gaara thrust his open palm forward. The entire sea of sand violently awakened. A colossal tidal wave of earth, towering dozens of meters into the air, reared up and blotted out the sun. It cast a massive, suffocating shadow over the field, carrying enough crushing kinetic force to flatten a small mountain as it crashed down toward Naruto.

"Oh no!" Naruto's eyes shrank in sheer horror. If that wave caught him, the sheer pressure would snap his bones like twigs. He would end up just as battered as Sasuke had been, or worse, completely buried alive. "Multiple Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

Pushed to the absolute brink, Naruto flooded his coils with chakra, summoning dozens of clones in a desperate burst of smoke. Half of the newly formed copies threw themselves directly at the descending tsunami, sacrificing themselves in a futile bid to bleed off its momentum. The remaining clones clustered together, grabbing each other's arms and shoulders to form a towering human ladder.

"Higher! Push me higher!" Naruto screamed, scrambling up the backs of his own copies.

He climbed with frantic speed, his boots digging into the shoulders and heads of his clones, desperately trying to gain enough altitude to clear the kill zone. Below him, the vanguard clones met the tsunami. The sheer, crushing weight of the sand instantly obliterated them. They popped into white smoke without slowing the wave for even a fraction of a second.

The tsunami's velocity was terrifying. The massive shadow loomed over the human ladder, the crest of the wave curling downward to swallow Naruto whole.

"Naruto-kun!" Hinata screamed from the safety of the trees, her hands flying to her mouth in terror.

Temari's heart leaped into her throat. Her worst fear was playing out right in front of her. Gaara had lost control. He was going to kill the boy.

But in that final, critical fraction of a second, as the shadow of death fell over him, Naruto did not flinch. There was no fear in his bright blue eyes—only a blazing, unyielding defiance. A massive surge of raw, untamed chakra erupted from his core. The topmost clones of the ladder grabbed his ankles and hurled him upward with all their combined strength. Naruto shot into the sky like a cannonball, his body barely clearing the lethal crest of the crushing wave.

"Great Ball Rasengan!"

Suspended in mid-air, the blonde ninja thrust both hands downward. A blinding, azure sphere of hyper-compressed chakra flared to life, expanding instantly until it was larger than Naruto's entire body. The violent screech of its rotation drowned out the roaring sand.

"Break... for me!!!" Naruto bellowed, twisting his waist and driving the massive, glowing sphere directly into the heart of the surging tsunami.

The collision between the Great Ball Rasengan and the ocean of sand triggered a cataclysmic roar that shook the very foundations of the training ground. A blinding flash of blue light pierced the dust, followed immediately by a violent, concussive shockwave. A visible ring of white, compressed air exploded outward, ripping through the battlefield. The sheer force of the gale hit the sidelines, violently throwing Temari and Hinata backward off their feet, their eyes wide with absolute shock.

It took a long time for the howling winds to die down. When the heavy curtain of dust finally settled and the chaotic battlefield returned to a dead calm, the sheer scale of the destruction was laid bare.

A gargantuan, smoking crater now dominated the dead center of the training ground, the earth completely hollowed out by the clash of titans.
