The creatures that came to Earth during the readjustment period were unlike anything humanity has seen before. These creatures were similar to animals that had gone extinct in the past but this time upon their return they seemed to be designed to serve a certain purpose.
For example, a creature that resembled the dinosaur called the stegosaurus was brought back to Earth. This animal with its long spikes trailing down its back could retract its spikes to reach long items on shelves to help consumers reach or find items at a store.
Many of the creatures that had appeared during the readjustment period seemed to be designed to help people.
The faceless entities however seemed to be created to enforce laws and protect the infrastructure of society. These monsters took control of high ranking positions in every single field to supervise humans.
After the council was formed it was almost like an invincible shock wave radiated through the world. All of the faceless entities began taking orders from the councilors. The entire sight was bewildering. A monster that was almost immortal bowing down to a human.
In the end, humanity had no choice but to adapt to the change in circumstances.
Icarus, a faceless entity, was a monster Ivory had never seen before. The entity was tall and hunched over with small black rods stabbing throughout its body. The smiley mask on his face seemed to contrast the apparent pain this creature must have been in. What could he possibly want from her?
Icarus pours Ivory a glass of a generic whiskey brand from a black bottle. He slides the glass over to Ivory swaying in his stance slightly.
Ivory doesn't even lay a finger on the glass. For all she knew, the drink could have been poisoned.
Ivory's voice shakes slightly trying to feign confidence, "Mind telling me just who you are and how you know me?"
Icarus scratches his chin, "Would you like to hear the answer to your first or second question first?"
Ivory sighs, "The first question first."
Ivory mumbles under her breath as the faceless entity ponders her question, "This is so stupid."
Icarus tries to stand straight up as he fakes clearing his throat, "I am Icarus. The protector of this underground city and the owner of Sinners' street."
Ivory says perplexed, "Are you the ex con who… bought Sinners' street?"
Icarus points toward himself and shakes his head, "No. No. I merely worked with Faye to buy the land so it appeared to be owned by a human."
Ivory shakes her head, "Why? You look like a faceless. The faceless enforce rules, they don't protect people."
Icarus holds himself steady on the side of the table, "I bought Sinners' street to serve as a safe haven for people with the sun burn."
Ivory stares at her adversary looking for hints of deception, "Why, Icarus? What do you have to gain from this?"
Icarus stares at his broken body impaled with dark black rods, "I can't take on a human, Ivory. I can't take on my own kind. I suffer in more ways than a living thing should. I hate how this world treats its life. I want to change it. I want to be that change."
Ivory stares at him with curiosity, "How would you change things?"
Icarus adjusts his smiley mask on his face, "You want me to answer your second question now?"
Ivory looks taken back for a second at the sudden change in topic but smiles in agreement. She thought it was best not to push the faceless entity too far despite his condition and focused on getting all the information she could.
Icarus keeps his palms open in a non threatening manner, "Ivory, I know you because I have access to medical records in the hive mind. This is how I keep track of which users with the sun burn have been released or executed."
The hive mind device was rumored to be a piece of technology that was created during the readjustment period that could see all available data from a country's electronic devices simultaneously.
The council was theorized to use this device to prevent illegal activities or transactions from happening on the internet. This had to have been a cover up story as it seemed the councilors were far more interested in the public's data.
The tall faceless entity shuffles forward to pick up the glass of whiskey he put down in front of Ivory. He shakes the alcohol inside lightly watching the liquid resemble a raging storm inside of the glass.
Icarus leans close to her and his voice drops to a whisper, "You're very lucky, Ivory. Too lucky. I wonder why they kept you alive."
Ivory leans back as her phone lights up in her pocket notifying her of a shift coming up, "I don't know… I have to go now. I have a quota I need to make."
Icarus trembles slightly, "I'm sorry to see you go so soon. I hope you can visit again, that is if you want to learn how to control those abilities of yours."
Ivory grimaces, "I'll let you know… I have a lot to think about."
