Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Soul at War

The final wave turned the camp into a nightmare of breaking earth and falling sky. Fissures ripped open like hungry mouths while purple-black light poured down in torrents. The Trinity Vessel stood at the center of the destruction, its body glowing with four clashing colors as the gods inside fought for complete control.

Lira refused to run even though her silver threads were almost gone. She stepped forward with determination in her eyes and shouted, "Kai, if you can still hear me, keep fighting. We are right here. We have not given up on you."

Mira stood beside her, tears streaming down her face but her voice fierce. She cried, "You promised us you would stay you. Fight them, Kai. We need our friend back."

The Vessel tilted its head. For a brief moment the four colors in its eyes clashed violently. Kai's normal brown eyes appeared again, filled with exhaustion and pain. He looked at his friends and whispered, "I am still trying. But four of them are too strong. I do not know how much longer I can last."

A sharp flash burned behind Kai's eyes.

The message hit him like fire. The four gods were no longer fighting each other. They were working together to crush what remained of him.

Lira saw the pain on his face and sent her last silver threads forward. She said, "Kai, come back to us. Remember the morgue. Remember the first Echo when you sounded like a rich snob asking for wine in the middle of a monster fight. That funny, stubborn gamer is still you."

Mira ran forward without any cards left and hugged the Vessel tightly. She cried, "Kai, please. We love you. Come back to us."

The Vessel screamed with four voices at once. Its body convulsed as the internal war reached its peak. For nearly a full minute, Kai's real voice was the loudest. He said, "I am Kai Voss. I died once. But I choose to live as me. I will not let you take my friends."

The Vessel dropped to its knees. The four colors in its eyes spun wildly. The golden light of Solara clashed against the other three, creating bursts of raw energy that cracked the ground around it.

The giant Void Herald roared and stepped forward, ready to crush everything in its path. The final wave continued to pour more power into the Vessel, making its form grow stronger and more terrifying with every passing moment.

Lira and Mira refused to run. They stood together, exhausted and bleeding, but determined to fight until the end. The fate of their friend and the entire camp now rested on whether the last spark of Kai could hold on just a little longer.

The Vessel slowly rose to its feet again. Its four-colored eyes burned with unified rage. It looked at the two girls and spoke in a voice that sent chills through the air. "The boy's time is over. The new era begins now."

It raised both hands toward the Herald. The colossal creature roared and charged straight toward Lira and Mira.

The final moments had arrived.

Kai felt the four gods merging their power inside him. Their combined will pressed down like a mountain on his soul. He fought back with everything he had left, but the pressure was crushing. Memories of the morgue, the first Echo, the laughter with Mira, and Lira's worried eyes flashed through his mind. Those memories were the only thing keeping him from disappearing completely.

The Herald's massive foot came down. The ground exploded where Lira and Mira stood. Lira barely managed to pull Mira aside with her last threads. The two girls rolled across the broken earth, bruised and exhausted.

The Vessel watched them with cold satisfaction. It said, "Your loyalty is admirable. But it ends here."

Kai's real voice broke through one last desperate time. He shouted inside the shared mind, "I will not let you hurt them!"

The Vessel's body jerked violently. The four colors in its eyes spun out of control. For several long seconds, Kai took partial control again. He forced the body to turn away from his friends and punched the Herald's leg with everything he had.

The impact made the giant creature stagger. The Vessel screamed in rage as the gods fought to regain full control.

Lira and Mira saw their chance. Lira sent her fading threads toward the Vessel while Mira ran forward and hugged it again. She cried, "Kai, we are here! Fight them! We love you!"

The Vessel dropped to its knees once more. The internal struggle reached its absolute peak. The four gods roared in fury while Kai pushed with the last of his will.

The final crack in the sky opened completely. A massive surge of Veil energy flooded down and poured into the Vessel. Its power swelled dramatically. The armor on its body became stronger. The crown above its head now burned with four distinct glowing points.

The Vessel stood up slowly. Its four-colored eyes burned brighter than ever. It looked at Lira and Mira and spoke in a voice that sent chills through the air. "The boy's last spark is fading. The final wave has given us everything we need."

It raised both hands toward the Herald. The colossal creature roared and charged straight toward Lira and Mira.

The final moments had arrived.

Kai felt his consciousness slipping. The four gods were merging into something new and terrifying. Their combined power was crushing his will. He reached out one last time with everything he had left and whispered to his friends, "I love you both. Thank you for never giving up on me."

The Vessel's body glowed with four bright lights. The Herald raised its massive arm to strike.

Lira and Mira stood together, refusing to run. They held each other's hands and faced the coming attack.

The final wave was at its strongest. Four gods controlled Kai's body. A Void Herald was ready to destroy everything. And the real Kai was still fighting with the last spark of his soul.

The end was here.
