Chapter 7 - 7: Becoming an Ackerman

A transmigrator from another world fabricates an identity, infiltrates a small household, and quietly turns himself into one of its core members in order to carry out his own plans. It sounds dramatic when phrased like that.

In reality, there was nothing dramatic about it.

I had already been taken in by the Ackerman family.

Although I had not formally spoken much with Mikasa's father at first, it was clear he had agreed to let me stay. As for legal registration, that would soon be handled as well.

So I settled into their home.

My first priority was recovery. My Demon Hunter talent had not fully awakened in this body, so my healing speed was only slightly above that of an ordinary person. It was nowhere near the level I once possessed. The cuts on my forehead and palm required careful rest and time.

During that week, I grew familiar with Mikasa, her mother Yato Ackerman, and her father, Hank Ackerman. I adjusted my behavior carefully, measured my words, and gradually earned their trust. By the time my wounds had nearly closed, I was no longer a guest.

I was family.

A week later, with my injuries mostly healed, I decided it was time to contribute.

After some thought, I chose something I genuinely excelled at.

Hunting.

"Hunting?" Hank looked at me in surprise. "Are you sure, Jax? It isn't easy."

"My grandfather taught me before he passed," I replied calmly. "After that, when I was on my own, I survived by catching small prey."

The explanation was simple and convincing.

Hank studied me for a moment, then nodded. "Alright. There's a bow and a few arrows in my room, along with a hunting knife. I'll bring them out and see if they suit you."

"Thank you, Uncle."

He ruffled my hair before heading inside.

Yato, who had been sitting nearby, finally spoke. "Jax, about your identification. Can you still find it?"

I shook my head without hesitation. "It's gone."

She blinked, then smiled gently. "It's alright. Tomorrow, Hank will take you to the town office to register. After that, you'll officially be part of this family in the eyes of the law."

I allowed gratitude to show on my face. "Thank you, Auntie."

"We're family," she replied, lightly patting my head. "No need to be so formal. Now go to sleep."

"But Uncle said…"

"You can try tomorrow," she interrupted with a soft smile. "I'll explain to him. Children need proper rest."

She gently urged me toward the bed. I did not resist.

Over the past week, through careful observation and subtle questions, I had learned more about the human government within the Walls.

The system could best be described as semi rationed. Basic necessities such as firewood, grain, oil, and vegetables were distributed freely. However, certain goods, including salt and meat such as beef or mutton, were rationed monthly per person. Even then, the portions were modest.

In short, food was limited.

In the entire week I had been here, I had eaten meat only once, and even then, in a very small amount.

The currency in circulation was called Lis. Judging from local prices, one Lis had modest purchasing power, enough for simple daily transactions but far from abundant wealth.

Mikasa's home lay within Wall Maria, not far from the outer perimeter. A mountain range stood between their house and the Wall itself. From the peak of that range, one could see the towering structure that protected humanity.
