Chapter 35 - The Breaking Point

The knock came in the evening.

Not loud.

Not urgent.

But wrong.

The Calm Before

Dinner had just ended.

Gu Xin was still at the table, absentmindedly tapping on a device.

Gu Lin was mid-explanation—something technical, something only half-understood.

Gu Yan sat close to Mingyun, quietly listening.

Gu Yi hadn't left yet.

For once—

No one was in a hurry.

It felt… complete.

Then—

Knock.

Everything stopped.

The First Shift

Mingyun froze.

Not visibly.

But something in her expression changed—subtly.

Gu Yi noticed immediately.

"…You weren't expecting anyone?"

She shook her head.

Too quickly.

The Second Knock

This time—

Slightly firmer.

Controlled.

Intentional.

Not a mistake.

At the Door

Mingyun walked toward it.

Each step… measured.

Careful.

As if she already knew—

Opening the door wouldn't just change the night.

It would change everything.

She opened it.

And the past stepped inside.

They Came Together

Three figures stood there.

Well-dressed.

Composed.

Untouchable.

At the center—

Her mother.

Cold eyes.

Perfect posture.

Unshaken.

Beside her—

Her father.

Silent.

Judging.

And behind them—

A man in a dark suit.

Not family.

Something worse.

No Greetings

"We're coming in."

It wasn't a request.

They stepped past her without waiting.

Like they owned the space.

Like they always had.

 Temperature Drops

The moment they entered—

Everything changed.

The warmth disappeared.

The air itself felt… colder.

The children looked up.

Silent.

Observing.

Recognition

Gu Xin's eyes narrowed slightly.

Gu Lin stilled.

Gu Yan shifted closer to Mingyun instinctively.

They didn't speak.

But they understood.

Something was wrong.

The First Words

Her mother's gaze swept across the room.

Then stopped.

On the children.

A flicker of something—

Not shock.

Disappointment.

"…So it's true."

Mingyun's hands tightened at her sides.

"You shouldn't be here."

Her voice was steady.

But barely.

 Judgment

"We shouldn't be here?"

Her mother's tone was calm.

Too calm.

"You disappear for years, disgrace the family, and this is your response?"

Each word landed precisely.

Like it had been rehearsed.

Gu Yi Steps In

He moved then.

Not aggressively.

But deliberately.

Placing himself slightly in front of Mingyun.

Between her—

And them.

 Shift in Focus

Her father's eyes moved to him.

Measured.

Assessing.

"…And you are?"

Before Mingyun could answer—

Gu Yi did.

"Their father."

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

The man in the suit stepped forward slightly.

Opened a folder.

Calm.

Clinical.

"We've already confirmed the timeline," he said.

"Birth records. Medical data. Private surveillance."

Each word stripped away any illusion left.

This wasn't a visit.

It was an operation.

The Verdict

Her mother spoke again.

"You've made your position clear."

A pause.

Then—

"Now we'll make ours."

Her gaze returned to the children.

Cold.

"They're coming with us."

Everything stopped.

Mingyun's breath caught.

"…No."

It came out instantly.

No hesitation.

No fear left.

Just refusal.

Her father finally spoke.

"You don't get to decide that anymore."

His voice was quiet.

Absolute.

"You've proven you're unfit to protect them."

Gu Yan grabbed Mingyun's sleeve tightly.

Gu Xin stood up slowly.

Gu Lin's eyes locked onto the man with the folder.

Calculating.

He didn't raise his voice.

Didn't step back.

Didn't hesitate.

"…Try it."

Two words.

Flat.

Final.

The man in the suit adjusted his glasses slightly.

Unbothered.

"Mr. Gu," he said calmly,

"I'd advise against making this difficult."

A small pause.

"Everything we're doing is within legal authority."

Silence filled the room.

Tight.

Explosive.

Mingyun's hand trembled slightly—

But she didn't step back.

The children stayed close.

Gu Yi stood in front of them.

Unmoving.

And for the first time—

The quiet life they had just begun to build—

Was being torn apart.
