Chapter 19 - Little, Quiet Joys

Morning light slipped gently through the curtains.

For once…

It was quiet.

A Rare Peace

Shui Mingyun woke slowly, her body still heavy with fatigue—but something felt different.

No crying.No sudden movement.

Just… calm.

She turned her head slightly.

Three small figures lay in their cribs.

Sleeping.

Peacefully.

For a moment, she didn't move.

Didn't speak.

She just… watched.

The First Smile

It started with the smallest one.

A twitch.

Then—

A faint, uncoordinated smile.

Mingyun blinked.

Then leaned closer, as if afraid it might disappear.

It didn't.

Her lips parted slightly.

A soft breath escaped her.

"…Was that a smile?"

She didn't know.

But something in her chest tightened gently.

Not pain.

Something softer.

Learning Them

By now, she could tell them apart without thinking.

Not by appearance alone—

But by presence.

One loved to move, restless even in sleep

One stayed quiet, watching everything with wide, curious eyes

One cried loudly, demanding attention without hesitation

"You're all so different…" she murmured.

Her fingers brushed lightly over their tiny hands.

Three small grips closed around her finger, one after another.

And for a moment—

She forgot how tired she was.

Laughter

It came unexpectedly.

Xinyi had stopped by that afternoon, bringing small things—snacks, baby supplies, anything she thought Mingyun might need.

She was mid-sentence, teasing one of the babies—

When a soft, bubbling sound interrupted her.

Both women froze.

Then it came again.

A tiny laugh.

Xinyi's eyes widened.

"Did—did you hear that?"

Mingyun didn't answer.

She was already looking down, her expression unreadable.

Then—

Slowly—

She smiled.

Not faint.

Not restrained.

A real one.

The Moment That Stayed

That night, things were still hard.

Feeding schedules still overlapped

Sleep was still broken

Her body still ached

But something had changed.

When one of them cried, she didn't just feel exhaustion anymore.

She felt recognition.

Connection.

"I'm here," she whispered, lifting one gently into her arms.

The crying softened.

Then stopped.

The small body rested against her, warm and fragile.

Trusting.

And in that quiet moment—

Mingyun realized something.

This wasn't just responsibility.

It wasn't just something she had chosen to endure.

It was something she had chosen to love.

A Different Kind of Strength

Later, when all three were finally asleep again, Mingyun sat beside them.

Not out of obligation.

Not because she had to.

But because she wanted to.

Her gaze lingered on them, softer than it had ever been.

"You three…" she whispered.

"…are worth it."

Far Away

Across the city, Gu Yi paused in the middle of his work.

For no reason he could explain, a faint sense of calm passed through him.

Not strong.

Not overwhelming.

But… there.

He frowned slightly, then shook his head.

"I'm overthinking things again…"

And yet—

For the first time in a long while—

The weight in his chest felt… lighter.

Back in the apartment, Mingyun carefully adjusted the blankets around the three sleeping babies.

Her movements gentle.

Precise.

The exhaustion was still there.

The struggle hadn't disappeared.

But now—

So had something else.

Warmth.

Laughter.

Love.

And in the quiet of the night, surrounded by three small, steady breaths—

Shui Mingyun closed her eyes.

Not in defeat.

But in peace.
